To mark the four-year anniversary of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Zack Snyder recently held a live commentary on Vero in which he revealed new details about his DC Comics masterpiece. One noteworthy moment, in particular, saw the filmmaker drop a bombshell about Gal Gadot's badass Amazon warrior.
When Snyder was shooting Batman v Superman, the Wonder Woman script still hasn't been written, and so he decided that the photo Bruce Wayne discovered of Diana would be from the Crimean War (a conflict which took place in the 1800s).
Choosing that war because it was "the first conflict where photography was used," Snyder added that, "Before we shot [the Wonder Woman] scene for the movie, we shot a placeholder. We had shot it previously from the Crimean war because it was the first conflict where photography was used. We talked about using the [American] Civil War."
Snyder would go on to say that it was important to him that Bruce discover a photograph rather than a painting because he wanted to get across the fact that the beautiful Diana Prince had not aged a day. Upon learning that her solo movie would be set in World War I, he changed the photo.
Warner Bros. choosing a war that's familiar to audience members was a logical decision on their part, but either one of Snyder's alternatives might have given her film a more unique feel.
