WONDER WOMAN 1984: Warner Bros. Considering HBO Max Debut Or Move To Summer 2021

Though the studio hasn't made an official announcement, Warner Bros. is reportedly mulling over a HBO Max debut for Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 1984, or a theatrical release delay until next summer...

With Wonder Woman 1984 looking increasingly unlikely to stick with its December 25 theatrical debut thanks to the ongoing pandemic, recent reports indicated that Warner Bros. was still mulling over how to proceed with the release of Patty Jenkins' DC Comics sequel. Now, it looks like the studio is close to making a decision.

Although the movie is highly unlikely to skip theatres entirely, Variety reports that studio execs are considering pushing Dina's second solo adventure to the summer of 2021. There's also talk of keeping the Christmas day theatrical release, but sending it to the HBO Max streaming service in early January.

Placing a huge superhero tentpole like WW84 on HBO Max after a shortened theatrical run would certainly be a major draw for the streamer, which is still trailing competitors Disney+ and Netflix by considerable margins despite exceeding expectations for its third quarter. However, WB is sure to tread extra carefully after Tenet's disappointing BO performance, and most seem to feel that a shift to summer 2021 is the most likely outcome here.

We'll just have to wait and see what happens, but an official announcement from Warner Bros. can't be too far off this late in the game.

I really enjoyed the first one. Had hoped to see this one on the big screen, but at this point I’m starved for cbm content so just go ahead and give it to me!

They’re kind of running out of new footage to put in new trailers without spoiling the movie.

Not gonna lie, I wouldn't hate the December shortened/hbo max January release. But, I unfortunately can't see it happening

If this vaccine is a thing and it succeeds in its job, and people are allowed to mass gather in moderation, what are the chances they push Batman forward to October again...

@Se4M4NSt4ine - I don't think it will happen. The Batman might need a year of post and Dune is mostly done. They probably want to get the latter out sooner. I would like if they move Batman up to December and delay Matrix 4 until Spring 2022.

Move it to June 4, 2021. It can take The Conjuring 3's release date and that movie can be moved to September or October.

@MovieMonster - That seems to be the conventional wisdom.

Yes just release it on streaming with a price tag, please. I love movie theaters but I hate respirators even more.

They might as well just wait until October and release it on Wonder Woman's 80th anniversary, which works out to be on a Thursday too.

I've reached a point where i don't even care anymore, just put it on HBO MAX and be done with it.

@Doomsday8888 - although it's quality didn't help, the same didn't work with New Mutants or Mulan.

Buzz around those movies died a lot faster around those two than I'm used to with cinema releases

@bkmeijer - The buzz died because they promoted Mulan at the beginning of the year and New Mutants sometime in antiquity.

Wonder Woman's buzz is already dead. The doctors called time.

May as well let us see the body.

I thought they were choosing between a february or june release, with home release being out of the picture. Any case, they should just go for june
