THE NEW MUTANTS Writer Explains Why He's Happy About The Movie's Seemingly Endless Delays

The New Mutants started shooting way back in 2017, but the Marvel Comics movie has been hit by endless delays. Now, though, writer Knate Lee has explained why that may have actually been a good thing...

The New Mutants was supposed to be released on April 3rd after previously being delayed on multiple occasions. Unbelievably, the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in yet another postponement for Josh Boone's Marvel Comics adaptation, and it's now found itself without a release date!

In an interview which took place before that happened, screenwriter Knate Lee shared his thoughts on why being hit with delay after delay may ultimately have benefited the movie.

"In a weird way, I think the delay's been good for us," he said in an interview shared by Digital Spy. "Last year, I saw the most epic, grand-scale superhero movie ever [Avengers: Endgame]. You can't go bigger than that. So, it feels like the perfect time for a superhero movie that's more intimate and claustrophobic. And we still have so many 'firsts': we're the first Marvel horror, we're the first to feature a gay relationship. Even though we're late…we still beat everybody."

Well, they're first for now, but with this latest delay, who knows when it will actually be released.

After all, The New Mutants isn't exactly going to be a top priority for Disney when they've been forced to remove the likes of Mulan and Black Widow from their release schedule. Now, it feels like Disney+ is probably the best possible destination for the movie, but whether that will happen remains to be seen.

Very early box office tracking pointed to a disastrous opening weekend for the movie, so Disney cutting their losses at this point doesn't seem hard to believe, especially when the original reason the movie was delayed came as a result of Fox wanting to order extensive reshoots and add new characters.

When do you think The New Mutants will be released now?

Man-Thing was technically the first Marvel "horror" movie.

@lvcl - Not sure Ghost Rider counts as horror, Ghost Rider can for sure work as a horror movie. but there really isn't anything that could count as horror in it

This movie really can't catch a break. Remember when the first trailer was released, people were actually interested in it. Then It was a success and they wanted to add more horror and delayed it for reshoots, then one of the actors was not allowed to film there anymore. Now all this going on and the version that is going to be released is the original version and now most people are indifferent to it as at best.

I mean... that already happened last October, and it made a billion dollars and won Best Actor.

"And we still have so many 'firsts': we're the first Marvel horror, we're the first to feature a gay relationship"
Blade is more horror than superhero film, and Deadpool 2 had an LGBT relationship.

@tmp3 - the whole "gay" thing isn't a good selling point outside the US and Europe, many don't like that for religious and cultural reasons. Gonna skip Eternals just for that.

Honestly, at first I couldn’t care less about the film. But the more delays, the longer wait, the more I hear about it? I’ll be first in line to see it now

@WakandanQueen - I never get how these guys don’t do their homework or claim to be fans but don’t see the films.

I know Hollywood is busy and maybe he hasn’t seen it okay let’s say he hasn’t, but he works for Fox and should be aware of the plot points and finer details of the films that encompass that universe.

@MalseMarcel - It might be a good financial idea, depending upon how much "more" they are planning on spending on theatrical promotions. I think we all now about it by now. People just need to know when it is going to be available to stream.

Come'on, Disney!
