X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX Star Evan Peters Says The Movie Will Be Much Darker Than X-MEN: APOCALYPSE

Despite the fact that X-Men: Apocalypse was arguably the most comic book-y instalment of the franchise to date, it wasn't well-received by fans or critics. So, what's going to change with Dark Phoenix? Well, Evan Peters has revealed in a new interview that things will be getting darker for the heroes and the general vibe will be much closer to Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class in 2011.

"I think it’s the classic X-Men: First Class tone, where there’s a bit of humor thrown in there, but it’s much darker than the previous one, Apocalypse. Apocalypse was the ‘80s, so there was a lot of room for goofy stuff in there. This one is a much more serious film about the internal struggle of Phoenix and Jean, so it’s a dramatic film. There’s nothing very comedic about it, other than the few moments that are in there. I think it’s gonna be a powerful one. It’s Dark Phoenix. I think it’s gonna be darker than we’re used to. It’s gonna be a change, but it’s gonna be fun for everybody."

X-Men: Apocalypse definitely had some dark moments but many struggled to take those seriously, especially as Oscar Isaac's En Sabah Nur looked a little comical at times. Simon Kinberg wrote that movie, of course, but he's both writing and directing Dark Phoenix so he probably won't struggle to change the tone. As for what the filmmaker brought to proceedings here, Peters went on to say:

"Awesome! It was incredible. He was very prepared and he knew what he was doing. He’s surrounded himself with a great team that’s been there for years. Everybody knows each other. It was a great environment for him to step forward. He knows the characters and story better than anyone because he wrote it. I think it was easy for him and it was very calm. It’s always been a fun experience, but it was also a calm experience, this time around, which was a relief. I’m sure there was a lot of pressure on him, but he’s such a nice guy and so cool. You didn’t see him being stressed or nervous, at all, on set, so it was very cool."

Many fans have their doubts about the first time director, especially as he's credited (blamed?) with helmed those Fantastic Four reshoots. Do these remarks from the Quicksilver actor make you any more excited for Dark Phoenix? As always, share your thoughts in the comments section down below.

Send it to Netflix. Bury the Fox-Men and let Marvel Studios do it right. I'm tired of these X-Men films being reboots of one another with little to no continuity.

@SonOfAGif - I don’t feel eel like they’re going to make much money if they send it to Netflix

@noahthegrand - They won't. They tried with The Interview after that controversy and despite it being the highest grossing straight to video movie, it still didn't make enough to avoid being considered a flop. These high budget movies simply aren't designed to go straight to video.

Eh, I'll give this a shot - it couldn't be any worse than Apocalypse. Plus that leak turned out to be fake which is good news.

Also, Sophie Turner had some comments about her upcoming role as Jean Redbird:

@L0RDbuckethead - Sounds like she is describing Game of Thrones.

@Origame - Yeah, I read that the Reddit mods who approved his leak are now calling it fake.

@L0RDbuckethead - Oh great. Now I can't wait to see the 1000+ commentors on this site use that "leak" to bad mouth a movie they haven't even see the trailer for.

"Apocalypse was the ‘80s, so there was a lot of room for goofy stuff in there. "

Like Magneto willingly joining Apocalypse and them potentially killing tens of thousands of innocent people around the world, only to end things with Xavier and Co. being perfectly friendly with him?

Good thing we're in the serious '90s now.

@Kyos - I think he's talking more like the goofy scene of him running everyone out of the X mansion.

@Kyos - Yup. I remember the 90’s as being totally serious.

Now, if I only knew how to make and post a gif, I would post one of Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch.

I gotta admit I actually think Apocalypse wasn’t that bad, only all the parts with En Sabah Nur were shit. And I hope they continue that level of gruesomeness from Apocalypse, if that what Peters also implies

I’m so tired of the “it’s gling to be darker” bs like that’s supposed to win over fans or that’s what we all want. I’m really tired of it. I’m not even planning on seeing this movie anymore to be honest.

@Frshcoupe - Really? They chose a dark tone and that's what's convincing you not to watch? I can understand at this point just being done with Fox's X-Men movies, but just the fact that he's saying it's darker is turning you off? There's a limit to what they can say about the movie without spoiling it you know? Especially since it's not even at the point of us getting a trailer.

Frshcoupe - 6/1/2018, 5:04 AM
@Origame - yes REALLY? Whatever happened to just making a damn good movie? Why is the vocabulary always the same now more than ever? It’s “darker” it’s “lighthearted”...we are tired of this crap. Just make a good movie! Sony is doing it with Venom, DC is known for doing it, now Fox is doing it. Using that term. They can’t say anything else besides “darker” that won’t spoil it?????????
Origame
Origame - 6/1/2018, 5:23 AM
@Frshcoupe - YES! We're still at the point where we don't even have a trailer, and they already described the basic set up of Jean going evil with her dark phoenix powers. What else CAN they say to convey what their movie is without describing the tone? Don't you think that's something worth knowing? If it's a comedy, don't you want to know it's a comedy?

Apocalypse may be the most forgetful superhero movie of all time. Not terrible, but just... Non-existent. No one is hyped for these FOX-Men movies anymore, kill it with fire.

@KWilly - Well, be fair..people who don't really care or know about the X-men are still hyped for the pretty lights and empty, confusing mess that are these movies

"It’s Dark Phoenix. I think it’s gonna be darker than we’re used to."

What's darker than Magneto almost committing genocide and DEFINITELY killing a good chunk of the population before he was stopped from completing 100 percent of the job?

I don't care about "darker","sexier",more "dramatic or (less) fun" just make a good movie dammit. Still, kinberg's name is the one who has me fleeing away from this movie like freaking Snow White when she's lost in the woods. Kudos to those who are looking forward to it tho.
