GAMBIT Was Shelved Due To The Commercial Failure Of FANTASTIC FOUR, According To Director Rupert Wyatt

Rupert Wyatt, who was once attached to direct Gambit, revealed budget issues stemming from the box office failure of Josh Trank's Fantastic Four caused Fox to pull the plug on the X-Men project.

Fox's Gambit movie never came to fruition (and probably won't now that Marvel Studios is assuming control of the X-Men), but no one really knew what happened behind the scenes of the project — until now.

Speaking to The Beat, Rupert Wyatt, who was once attached to direct the film starring Channing Tatum, revealed that it simply came down to a lack of budget. Wyatt explained that the commercial failure of Josh Trank's Fantastic Four caused the budget of Gambit to be slashed nearly 10 weeks before production was slated to begin. While Wyatt was open to rewriting the script for the newly proposed budget, Fox opted not to proceed.

“I was very close with Channing Tatum and his producing partner Reid Carolin, and I was on the script with him and Josh Zetumer as a writer. We were close, I believe 10 weeks away. It simply came down to budget. There was not enough. You know all too well about the politics of the business. Fantastic Four had been released by Fox a month before and had not gone well for them, so our budget was slashed quite considerably. The inevitable, from my perspective, was, ‘Well then we need to rewrite the script to tailor to our budget,’ but we were too close to a start date for Fox to really want to go there, so, unfortunately, it just didn’t work out.”

While Gambit never took off under the Fox umbrella, Wyatt is hoping the film still gets made by the House of Mouse.

"All I know is Channing had a really, really wonderful idea for what that film could and should be,” Wyatt added. “I know he and Reid are still plugging away at it, so I hope in the new Disney era, that then they get to make it.”

Disney has yet to reveal its movie plans for the X-Men franchise. The deal to acquire the 20th Century Fox film and TV studios is expected to be completed soon, according to Disney CEO Bob Iger. Meanwhile, Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants will be the last two X-Men movies released by Fox.

@HeavyMetal4Life - No, but Reid Carolin did get Alan Horn’s daughter a stone.

@HeavyMetal4Life - This is all inconsequential according to some people on here Gambit will begin shooting next month.

@HeavyMetal4Life - Hahahaha almost spit my coffee out! We've already heard that Fox will still be Fox after the Disney deal, what if Dark Phoenix is a hit do you think they will continue to make X-films with the existing cast?
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 3/12/2019, 6:41 AM
@narrow290 - nahhhh.... Fox-Men is dead with Dark Phoenix and New Mutants (if that movie even gets released). I don't think that Dark Phoenix is going to be a it, and pretty sure Feige will want a clean slate that allows him to do what he wants with those characters without taking over what someone else had done. The only Fox cast members that I believe will carry over are associated with Deadpool.

Fox slashed Gambit's budget because.....Fantastic Four didn't do well?

Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 3/11/2019, 8:32 PM
@OmegaDaGrodd - Obviously the failure of a horrible misguided mid-budget comicbook movie that no one wanted to see signaled that the market wasn't there for horrible misguided mid-budget comicbook movies that nobody wants to see. You ask me: Fox made the right call.

kind of a lame excuse, because it's not like they stopped doing X-Men movies after that.

Doubt it, maybe what he thinks happened but Logan and Deadpool were made after and had success.

@CaptainAmerica - it's really a shame, I think FOX could have gone on making Marvel movies all they needed was someone credible to take the reins as a consultant. I'm sure Disney would've played ball with them just like they did with Sony, but according to the press FOX didn't want to play nice.
EskimoJ
EskimoJ - 3/11/2019, 6:54 PM
@CaptainAmerica - Deadpool cost virtually no money to put out though, and Logan was capping a well-received character arc.
CaptainAmerica
CaptainAmerica - 3/11/2019, 7:58 PM
@SpideyQuad - yup! Really needed someone like Feige from the beginning that could help mold the characters they had. Too bad Singer left the first time and [frick]ed everything up. They did hire Miller but no clue what came of that.
CaptainAmerica
CaptainAmerica - 3/11/2019, 7:58 PM
@EskimoJ - exactly, Deadpool was cheap. Gambit could’ve been made on a small budget and still made money if done right.
JDL

@CaptainAmerica - Actually no. Deadpool had already finished shooting several months before F4stic started its descent into infamy. As for Logan that was 2017 and it was Prof X+Wolvie+X-23. Nowhere near the same thing.

::shrug:: Maybe this will be a candidate for Disney +.

It will be interesting how the xmen come on board. Will it be a slow burn one at a time or full on team.
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 3/11/2019, 5:15 PM
@LaserKing - I think they need to slowly introduce them, and not for a few years. You need to let the audience have a little bit of a breather to wash away the taste of the FoX-Men. If Feige is doing anything mutant related, hope he focuses on characters we haven't seen yet (or who were never given much screentime at Fox). Still think they should tackle the Fantastic Four and their cosmic characters first.
LaserKing
LaserKing - 3/11/2019, 5:19 PM
@HeavyMetal4Life - Makes sense to do FF first because there has not been a movie (do not count the last one) in a while. Also I think they will tie in with the skrulls. Superskrull can now be used. I would LOVE the Hulk vs Wolverine first.
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 3/11/2019, 5:22 PM
@LaserKing - yes exactly, Skrulls and FF opens a lot of possibilities. I do have a personal feeling that they may modify the reason behind the creation of the Super Skrulls in the MCU (compared to the comics). I think they will see Carol in action and realize they need someone on their side who can match her powers.
LaserKing
LaserKing - 3/11/2019, 5:28 PM
@HeavyMetal4Life - I think skrulls will be like the infinity stones and keep us guessing and also tying stories together. The stones were such a key to bringing everything to the Endgame that they must have already come up with something to tie future movies together.
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 3/11/2019, 5:29 PM
@LaserKing - hmm that's a pretty interesting idea!! I like it. Also remember, there is at least one Skrull running around on Earth by the end of Captain Marvel. 4 land, 2 die and one survives (Talos).
LaserKing
LaserKing - 3/11/2019, 5:31 PM
@HeavyMetal4Life - Wait...there is? How do you know?
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 3/11/2019, 5:33 PM
@LaserKing - well we see 4 Skrulls land on the beach. After the beach landing, we only see what happens to three Skrulls...
LaserKing
LaserKing - 3/11/2019, 5:37 PM
@HeavyMetal4Life - I have only seen it once (so far) and thought they all left at the end. That does thicken the plot.
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 3/11/2019, 5:40 PM
@LaserKing - Nah. You have the Coulson impersonator. Talos's 'scientist' and then Talos himself. Its possible that the fourth Skrull is the one that Carol fights on the train, but if it is, we never see what happens to that individual.
LaserKing
LaserKing - 3/11/2019, 5:47 PM
@HeavyMetal4Life - Well if there is a skrull(s) then we will find out eventually. The amount of theories from endgame will pale in comparison to what is happening with the skrulls!
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 3/11/2019, 5:49 PM
@LaserKing - sure will!
SpideyQuad
SpideyQuad - 3/11/2019, 6:14 PM
@LaserKing - I think you do it the way the comics were done. Start with the original team being teenagers and then you expand the new world from there… Just like the comics. It's not rocket science. But it does help to have someone with a little comic knowledge. Hell, they could've always hired me :-)
LaserKing
LaserKing - 3/11/2019, 7:39 PM
@SpideyQuad - Well it sounds like you know what is going on. Your hired!
CaptainAmerica
CaptainAmerica - 3/11/2019, 8:00 PM
@LaserKing - I would introduce FF through the Quantum Realm and X-Men through some sort of side effect of time travel kinda like Flashpoint.
LaserKing
LaserKing - 3/12/2019, 5:40 AM
@CaptainAmerica - I do not know enough about the Quantum Realm. Is the negative zone from there?
CaptainAmerica
