Cinematographer Matthew Libatique To Film Wolverine 2 With Darren Aronofsky!

The cinematographer of movies like Cowboys and Aliens, Iron Man and long time Darren Aronofsky collaborator has confirmed that he'll work on the upcoming Fox sequel...

Libatique has been Aronofsky's cinematographer of choice for a long time (dating back right to Pi and up to the directors latest release Black Swan) and while it may not be too exciting a scoop to learn that they'll be teaming up once again, it's worth noting that he has also worked on the first two Iron Man movies with Jon Favreau as well as Cowboys and Aliens meaning he has plenty of experience with the superhero genre.

Here are a couple of excerpts from the report over at Collider:

"We also talked about the gorgeous Western fantasy work he's done for "Cowboys and Aliens," and the pleasures of shooting a face as great as Harrison Ford's. I love that he can shoot big commercial fare like "Iron Man" and "Cowboys And Aliens" and really give the films a rich, vibrant sheen that makes movie stars look legitimately superhuman, but he can also shoot films like "Black Swan" or "Requiem For A Dream," pure emulsion emotion."

"As he turned to another friend in line, he confirmed that he'll be joining Darren Aronofsky for "Wolverine 2," so there's one more reason for me to look forward to that movie."

With Hugh Jackman back as Wolverine, shooting is expected to start on the Japan set sequel early next year for a possble 2012 release.

Finally somebody else who doesn't like Jackman as Wolverine! I thought I was crazy or somethin' haha. He plays a good character, but that character's not the real Wolverine. I want a vicious little [frick]er

I know these words are not expected to come out of a true fan boys mouth, but . . . Other than FOX going with the complete wrong director and letting him screw up a great franchise (Die Brett Ratner), I have enjoyed seeing my favorite characters come to life on the big screen in new ways. They are not just like the comics, they cant be, they are an interpretation, and oh well cry babies if they didn't fit you your preconceived notions. Let the hate mail begin.

The X-men is all about re-interpretation and change. You didn't see anyone dissing AOA or Days of Future Past, ecause they weren't the X-Men they knew from the '60s. Nobody complained about Chris Claremont's All New All Different X-Men. The world that Bryan Singer created for the X-Men movie universe is true and in keeping to what the fanboys have been hoping an X-Men film would be, for decades. Something that was more in keeping with the low-budget 80s sci-fi films that the X-Men comics inspired and in turn were inspired by, whilst fitting the high concept fantasy elements of the comics into the public film-going concioussness in a way that would not seem high concept or out of place.
Aronofsky on Wolverine? Damn good DP? This is going to be a fine film. Wait and see.

He hasn't made a bad film yet. I think his worst film was The Wrestler, and you know how good that film was.

Could this be the first good CBM from Fox? Looking at deadpool72's list (which I totally agree with) I find it hard to believe, regardless of the director and cinematographer. Just look at X-Men: First Class. You've got the same guy who directed the brilliant Kick-Ass, but it still sounds like one huge [frick]ing mess. I hate you Fox.

liveevil
liveevil - 11/13/2010, 2:47 PM
@GUNSMITH if they want to really get us excited he will. I'd like to see a gritty brown/orangeish costume and even a mask. I'm sure they can work that into the script by having it be part of a samuri outfit or something.

btw, if anyone has the deadpool script I'd love to get my hands on that, [email protected]

@liveevil
I love the brown John Byrne costume, too. Definately the best Wolvie superhero duds. But they would have to have a good reason for it. The movie universe is a lot more about things making a realistic sense, than the comics. maybe a Samurai costume, but I'm not sure I'd buy that. It doesn't look like much of a Samurai costume. Maybe it could be a Kabuki costume or something and he only wears it briefly, but I'm not sure I'd buy that either. It would be good, but if it doesn't work, then it shouldn't be in.

@DukeAcureds2010 Duly noted. I'm not well versed in historical/cultural Japanese attire. Kinda just went the with the Samuri since I knew they wore helmets at least.

Regardless, costume or not I'm going to end up shelling out the dough for this film... afterall, I shelled out the mulla for Borigins.

I'm with Josh.
A photographer of Labatique's caliber is an asset to any kind of film. But that won't save the picture from bad, silly, writing and shoddy adaptation.
