Could "the Wolverine" be the best x men movie yet?

I ask a question which may shock you!

One of the most successful movie franchises is Fox's X men movies. Every two or three years there is a new release and half the time, the movie is quite good. Soon, "the Wolverine" is due to begin filming. A film which is based upon the 1980's mini series "Wolverine" by Frank Miller and Chris Claremont. But is this a good move?

First off, anyone who has read this graphic novel will know how good it is. When this was written Wolverine was still quite mysterious, not much was known about his past and he was considered an underdog when entering a fight. Hugh Jackman has always expressed his interest to heavily adapt this graphic novel to a feature film. The only problem that I can foresee studios like Fox having is that, apart from Wolverine, there are no x men in the story. Now everybody knows that x men origins tried to include as many cameos as possible but I'm pretty sure Fox would of learned their lesson by now.

The next problem is one that some people have and others don't. Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Now I like Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. He is fully commited to the role and always acknowlegdes Wolverine as the role which helped his career. Plus his portrayal of Logan is good, it brings fear, uncertainty and you like him enough not to hate him. However others say that Jackman is too good looking for the role and he is too tall to fully capture the essence of Wolvie, I can see where they are coming from. Jackman may be one of the best looking men in the world but that doesn't change the fact that people in make up could just make him look a little more gritty than usual. As for the age, I don't care. the dude's in amazing shape and his "wrinkles" just add a bit more to the fact that Wolverine has been around in half a century. Finally his height can easily be avoided by using clever camera shots that were also used in X1.

Lastly, I must admit when Darren Aronofsky left I was dissapointed but the feedback from the quality of the script has been amazing. The only problem I have is that it is being rewritten. If the script was so perfect, why rewrite it, I can only think that new director James Mangold wanted to change some details to help shooting the film. Overall, I am quite excited about the release of this film and looking forward to how it turns out.

As always comments are much apprieciated

Only if the real Wolverine comes out, bloody and relentless! Kinda sucks that he won't have his natural boned claws, those work better in my opinion. Wanna see him fight a bear, drink from the river with a wolf, tear some shit up XD

The timelines for the x-men are so beyond repair, it simply does not matter what they do, the stories could be about penguins drinking white Russians in Fiji, only the names are from the x-men comics, that is how i see it, they are simply using the names, it's nothing more beyond that, take recognizable names and make a story - any story name it X-Men:Flightless Birds of Swim and presto movie magic!

@kriswone, considering x men 3 and x men origins dont even count anymore, the timeline isnt that messed up, and if you think they just take names then you probably watching x3 and wolverine because x men 1 and 2 and first class are very well done x men films, with mostly the correct characters

DMM5 is TOTALLY right.

@Gamecreatorjj: They say that they don't count, but most people don't know that. That's the big problem.

@jjmeylar: They should fix that by putting a statement from Fox, at the begining or end of, The Wolverine. The statment should explain the timeline. That's all they half to do. Do you know how inexpensive and effective that would be.

@Golden123: That would be great, but they won't do it. :(

@jjmeylar i have to agree, to make it easier for the public to understand, it would be cool if they made an x4 with cable and bishop, or just a cable and bishop movie, they go back in time and change stuff, retconning x3 and origins

If Fox does what Watchmen did I can see this working, but
Fox's record isn't good with there adaptions.

@gamecreatorjj - I do not see what you mean "...with mostly the correct characters"

The original First Class was Jean Grey, Ice Man, Cyclops, Beast, lead by a wheel chair bound Prof. X

In the movie they had Beast, and a walking Xavier - I guess that is "mostly the correct characters".

It still doesn't explain that Mystique/Xavier didn't know each other in X1, Cyclops' younger brother Havok is like 20ish in the 1960's (Scott would be 60 - 70 in X1/X2), Beast not Xavier and Magneto built Cerebro, there are so many more discrepancies.

It's the little things that get me, there is an entire universe there, it all goes together yet they can't make a movie that would flow, the movies are entertaining, but every time i watch any of them I'm like "that's not really how it is..."

@m1312020 - Watchmen was awful and is the worst comic book movie to date, and I watched FreeJack.

@kriswone I liked Watchmen,but what I meant here was
to keep this Wolverine as close as they can to the
source story from the 80s.
marvel72
marvel72 - 9/22/2011, 8:09 AM
if they stick as close as possible to the source material i.e wolverine four issue limited series by claremont & miller it could be a contender for the best x-men related movie.

@ m1312020

watchmen is my favorite dc movie so far, along with v for vendetta & superman the movie.

Interesting article, although I have to wonder, what the heck do Hugh Jackman's looks got to to with his character? Seriously.

I thought all the X-Men movies were great, and yea some stuff between the movies don't make sense but who cares as long as for the specific story and timeline is good and the script is done right then I'm all in. I liked X-Men origins: Wolverine and I was disappointed that Darren Aronofsky left the project but I have faith. I think X-Men First Class is the best comic book based movie yet, The Dark Knight was great but it had some confusion to me. I think that Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance will be the greatest superhero movie ever!!! Than again it's Ghost Rider the most badass and greatest superhero ever... thought the first movie was shit, unless you watch the extended cut

one of the many reasons x-men first class is my favorite x-men movie is because it didnt had wolverine as the lead character in it, x1 i totally understand why he whas the lead character but why in x2 should just gave xavier and cyclops lead story.
