IMDB Adds Two Characters to The Wolverine Movie!

IMDB Adds Two Characters to The Wolverine Movie!

So I did some digging around on IMDB & found out 2 characters who are gonna be playing (important?) roles in The Wolverine!

James Mangold becoming director for The Wolverine & the film now being slated to go oon the floors by October this year (for a 2012 release) is old news right? But wait till you get a load of this! I did some digging up of my own & got some cool info about the movie!

Seems like we are gonna be seeing Yuriko Oyama (aka Lady Deathstrike) in action once again in The Wolverine! Kelly Hu is now part of the cast, returning as the character she played in 2003's X2. Perhaps this will chalk out more of her origins & this time she better not be brainwashed lol! Some more character development wouldn't hurt...And I do hope her costume resembles (or is at least inspired by) her comicbook costume! It would be pretty cool if they decide to go the X-Men First Class route & try to be more faithful to the original costumes. :D

Also newly added is a new character (to the X-movie fans at least) from the X-Men canon. Naturi Naughton (Fame, The Playboy Club to-be-aired TV series) plays the reluctant X-Man, Cecilia Reyes. As we all know, she was forced into the X-Men by circumstance, albeit for a short time. A doctor by profession, she has the power to create a force field around her. Unlike Yuriko who is very much related to Wolverine's story in the comics, Reyes really isn't.

Her only distant connection to the whole Logan saga is that she was once a prisoner at the mutant concentration camp called Neverland, run by Weapon X (that was responsible for creating Wolverine). Here she used her medical expertise to help the other prisoners out there. Hmmm, so another convoluted timeline out here as in the last Wolverine movie?! (Gambit & Emma Frost anyone??)

The character's last name is Reyes, obviously Hispanic but they cast a black actress?!? They couldn't find a Hispanic actress to fill the role of a Hispanic superhero?!? Jeez! -_- This movie is gonna fail anyway. Sounds like another reboot thats not a reboot. smh When will FOX just give up?

@TayDee & @WittySupername: I'm ignorant and have flawed logic? How do I have flawed logic when the character is obviously of Hispanic decent. You both know that if a black comic book character was played by a dark skinned hispanic or if a white character was played by an Indian guy or of another race the character was never depicted as all you people would have a fit and you know it. So don't try to act like you are so smart and ethical by saying I'm pulling the race card.

And as for the character being afro-latin american, people can tell the difference between a dark skinned Hispanic and a full blooded African-American, so don't give me that bull.

Acting roles are limited as it is for minorities, especially hispanic people. Why won't the studios actually allow them to play a role that they are able to fill for once? I am simply stating a fact. Hollywood apparently don't know any of the colors in between the spectrum and its been an ongoing issue forever. If you don't like to hear the truth then don't read my comments.

@BaneKill77: In case you didn't know Afro-Latin American is a term used to describe a dark skinned Hispanic person who looks more African than Native American or Spaniard. So in reality, the character is Hispanic.

1. So your saying just because someone has a certain name, they're automatically placed in a certain race?

2. Names don't determine which race you are and she's not obviously hispanic, google any one of her pics and she obviously looks black.

3. Do you seriously think that every mixed character in a movie is going to be cast according to their background?

4. As far as im concerned, in order to be considered afro-latin american, one must be of african and latin descent, so she is afro-latin american, not just hispanic.

5. I really don't give two shits about this character or who she's played by so I won't comment on it again.

People...people...this conversation has gone waaaaaaay off-track. Let's all hold hands and just agree that this movie looks lame.

:P

btw- I agree with JULEZ on this. And plus I mean...it's kinda sad when 3 people feel the need to gang up on her.

Just saying.

@JULEZ13 - "The character's last name is Reyes, obviously Hispanic but they cast a black actress?!? They couldn't find a Hispanic actress to fill the role of a Hispanic superhero?!? Jeez! "

WTF u crying about first of the character is Afro-Latin American so shes going to have a black ground. so it make sense to cast a black actress for the role.

@LP4

how can u agree when u got a actress like Zoe Saldana who is latino also shes black. or what about Martin Sheen the guy is a white Hispanic but his not playing Hispanic role he plays white american roles on film i.e. Uncle Ben.

@RoyalTenenbaum

thats b.s. their is black, white latinos. if u are a black latnio thats what u are. Cecilia Reyes is a black latnio she only been played by an African-American actress.

EarOne - 7/3/2011, 9:56 PM
they should've cast Rosario Dawson, an afro-latina, in the role. she'd be perfect for Reyes.

Hmm I didnt expect such a heated argument on this subject of all things! lol But as LP4 has said before, let's steer away from this trend of thought now & get onto whether we are for or against these characters appearing &/or how we'd like to see 'em portrayed...

@JULEZ13 & RoyalTenenbaum Actually from the pics I thought Reyes was black too! I didnt read too much into the whole afro-LATIN american thing :P so thx for the info!

@Curmudgeon I know :P But right now any news on this movie is well, news! I was happy to see some updates on the page :)

@xmen145 Ditto! :)

@All. Yup I'm don't have high hopes for this movie either after the last wolverine horror movie! lol But I do still have a few rays of hope left cos it's gonna be a new ep in the life of Logan (not at all related to what went down in X-Men Origins Wolverine) & plus am now excited as to how Deathstrike would be portrayed in the film!

And on a side note, to get your fix on the X-Men tune into my blog All Things X (http://all-things-x.blogspot.com)!

@RoyalTenenbaum

what a silly thing u talking about im not talking about black people from different apart of the world are a descended of Africans. im talking about black Africans descended. Cecilia Reyes is a "Afro-Latin" aka Black-Latino.

whats next Afro-Caribbean aint black Caribbean people then jeez know your sh!t.

"Like I said before, half my family is "Afro-Latin", meaning they're descended from Africans and look black, and they get pissed off whenever they're approached by people calling them black in the American sense. They are hispanic."

they still black dont care for the American sense or not around the wrong they still be consider as black cause of their background.
humbleme
humbleme - 7/7/2011, 10:21 AM
@RoyalTenenbaum

If labels upset you, then you probably should avoid Americans at all costs, or Western society in general really. If you don't like a label, you have to redefine what it means, I can't just say "I'm not black" "It doesn't mean to me what it means to you" because the label isn't by me or for me. You just can't control other people's language in the way that you demand.
@JULEZ - Hispanic actresses don't looke like Cecelia Reyes, who is very dark skinned as has African features, so casting, say, Salma Hayek would be like casting Michael Clarke Duncan as the Kingpin. He may have a similar background as the character, being 4th generation American and all, but they have different ethnicities, so it was a bit of a mismatch.

@jazzman

The issue that RT is talking about is pretty serious, actually. When you label someone as 'black' you have a sort of silent permission to treat them differently than white people, economically, academically, socially. This is part of the reason that black hispanics don't identify themselves as black, because they don't want to be part of the whole 'underdiagnosed, overprosecuted, underhired' documented prejudice that African Americans receive. The truth is, the labels of black and white and Afro and such don't really have any *true* meaning. That's why people fight against those labels, becuase the world really would be a better place without them.

----
The Bottom line is that Cecelia Reyes, in the comics *appears* to be of african descent, and so a woman of African descent is not 'miscast' when playing her. A south russian or dark skinned japanese woman would be, even though they may be called black, they don't look like the character. So would Alexa Vega, because, although hispanic, she doesn't look like the character. And Rosario Dawson or Zoe Saldana wouldn't be caught anywhere near this convoluted madness, so don't even go there, my friends. :D

It's very odd when fans are upset because an actor or actress has a different background, even though they look just like the character. The backgrounds are fictional for the comic book characters, who here cares if the actress is actually hispanic?

jazzman
jazzman - 7/7/2011, 12:54 PM
@humbleme

we aint talking about black/white as a racial scenes if thats the cast people are too sensitive. like i said before Cecilia Reyes is black and she is of african descent thats why shes Black Hispanic. i dont care how is America is cause im not from America. plus RT behave like a d!ck so i dont care what he say.

JULEZ comment just prove how stupid a person can be saying why they cast a black american person for the role when the casting is not wrong.
