X-MEN: Alexandra Shipp "Not Interested" In MCU Return; James McAvoy Is "Not Saying Anything"

Alexandra Shipp plated Storm in X-Men: Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix, but it doesn't sound like the Barbie actress has much interest in returning as the mutant hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe...

Alexandra Shipp made her debut as Storm in X-Men: Apocalypse, before returning as the fan-favourite mutant hero in what would turn out to be the final X-Men movie of the 20th Century Fox era before the Disney/Marvel takeover, Dark Phoenix.

Shipp did a pretty good job with what she had to work with, which, by the actress' own admission, wasn't very much.

“I would and I wouldn’t," Shipp replied when asked if she'd like to play Storm again in a 2019 interview. "Because Storm barely has anything to say as it is. I don’t know about [the other actors] but like we never talk. So it would be really nice if we weren’t piled into yet another jam-packed cast, in which you only see me in the back of the shot like f*cking sasquatch.”

Though we're still waiting for an official announcement, Marvel Studios is currently planning an X-Men reboot, but we have seen actors from the previous movies show up in the MCU. Patrick Stewart appeared as Charles Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Kelsey Grammar voiced a CGI Beast in The Marvels, and Hugh Jackman is set to return as Wolverine in Deadpool 3.

Though the studio may ultimately recast these roles, the door is clearly open for actors from the earlier films to return as their respective characters - even if it is just for a one-off cameo.

So, does Shipp still feel the same about Storm, or would she now consider suiting up as the powerful weather-manipulator again?

"Not interested," the Barbie actress tells ET. "I think there are other women who can take on that role and really kill it."

The site asked James McAvoy, who played the younger Professor X from First Class on, the same question, but he seemed a little more hesitant to rule anything out.

"Anything I say will get me in trouble. I've had no contact with them. If they want me to come back, they need to talk to me and need a good script. I'm not saying anything"

At this point, it's probably safe to say that most fans would prefer to see new actors in all of these roles, which will most likely happen eventually.

Rumor has it that Deadpool 3 will at least partially lay the groundwork for the elusive X-Men reboot, so hopefully we'll have a better idea of what Marvel has planned for the mutants after July 26.

@McMurdo -

Agreed.

Storm should be a headliner. She should be played by a top actress, not some spare.

@McMurdo - How I wish Storm got the character development she deserves in live action.

@Apophis71 - That's interesting. Because I've definitely seen many people say that they prefer Apocalypse simply because it has a Quicksilver scene and Dark Phoenix doesn't (seriously). But I rarely see an in-depth comparison between the two films that analyzes their stories and characters.

As much as I grew up and loved the Foxverse OG actors - and even the younger actors - I really hope they reboot the X-Men in the MCU after the Multiverse saga ends.

The one reason Im worried about deadpool, I dont need to see the Fox X-men again. Its like watching the Flash in a way, we know the uninverse is over. Im kind of over the nostalgia trips. Days of Future Past and Logan were the only send off I need.

@AvalonX - I wouldn't them returning if Deadpool 3 is a Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe adaptation, but with the FoX-Men characters.

Either way, any returning characters should serve a narrative purpose. And indeed not the nostalgia trip The Flash was. That movie worked the same with any other Batman.

@AvalonX - "we know the uninverse is over"

Kevin Feige, Shawn Levy, multiple rumors, and The Marvels mid-credit scene have suggested otherwise.

@Gnostic - What you think they are going to bring the Fox cast back as the MCU X-men?
Gnostic
Gnostic - 1/17/2024, 8:55 PM
@AvalonX - Kevin Feige himself has said that he doesn't want to recast certain roles and suggested that The Marvels mid-credit scene was the MCU X-Men's introduction. Just stating what the evidence so far suggests.
AvalonX
AvalonX - 1/17/2024, 11:20 PM
@Gnostic - Right I could see that althout my own take is those particular X-men will be retconned after Secret Wars. In a lot of cases, you have a young and older version of each Fox character because of the DOFP retcon. Because of the multiverse nonsense, you could have the first class actors in Deadpool and the OG Fox crew in Secret Wars (Or both really). Then when they launch their own movies, they get recasted. The MCU X-men is so far out, the OG cast will be way too old but I guess we'll see.

Didn't she say they all were set to return despite the merger? Guess times change.

I wouldn't mind seeing any of them return in Deadpool 3 or Secret Wars though. After that though, there are indeed different actors that should get the chance then.

She isn’t wrong. Her character was basically just a prop in the movies she was in. Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix were such 💩s.
abd00bie
abd00bie - 1/14/2024, 2:17 PM
@mountainman - Apocalypse should have been a new trilogy where part 1 would be set in the 80s and introducing Apocalypse "Mutant Massacre" and X-Men losing the fight in the third act causing a ripple/ timeline split accidentally sending Apocalypse into the future, part 2 and 3 would have been set in the "Age of Apocalypse" with older cast returning. Fox could have had their own multiverse before the MCU. As for Dark Phoenix, it shouldn't even have been attempted again lmao
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 1/14/2024, 3:23 PM
@mountainman - TBH barely recall Storm being IN Apocalypse, watched it twice and can't bring to mind a single line she spoke and only thing close is...

...did she help levatate someone? Jean Grey/Phoenix I think, other than that I'd need to watch it again to recall and didn't intend to watch it a second time but one of the kids wanted to watch it (first time for them).

That isn't to say she was bad in the role but if so little given to the character in order to be memorable hard to say anything other than she looked good.

Some day I will get around to watching Dark Phoenix, keep meaning to but always something else I end up picking from my list of will get around to it films when I am in the mood to check one of them out. Last time I opted to watch New Mutants instead and took me till back end of last year to get to that one, which likely says a lot about how much Apocalype burned any hype for Fox Xmen films.
mountainman
mountainman - 1/14/2024, 3:56 PM
@Apophis71 - Storm, Archangel and Psylocke had underdeveloped silent goon roles in Apocalypse. That movie was such a let down. On paper it should have been great - follow up to DOFP with Bryan Singer directing and Oscar Isaac playing one of the best X-Men villains. But man, did they really ruin that one.

Believe it or not, Dark Phoenix was much worse. Besides a nice action scene towards the end, there is nothing good about that movie. Worst main line X-Men film.
