Joss Whedon told fans the sad truth. He won't be directing or writing X-Men 3. Although the Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator was interested in the project, 20th Century Fox never asked him and he thought showing up at the studio would be a serious faux pas, he told Whedonesque.
