X-MEN '97 Director Addresses Decision To Make T'Chaka The Show's Black Panther Instead Of T'Challa

In X-Men '97's season 1 finale, we caught up with Black Panther. However, instead of being T'Challa, it was his father, T'Chaka who held the mantle! Now, one of the show's directors has addressed that...

The X-Men '97 finale featured some huge Marvel Universe cameos, including Black Panther. However, we'd later discover that T'Chaka was beneath the mask, not T'Challa.

The decision has perplexed viewers, particularly when T'Challa's father is typically portrayed as the former Black Panther who fought alongside Captain America in World War II (which, in this timeline, could admittedly still be the case). T'Challa being sidelined has spawned many fan theories, with most convinced the decision must be related to Chadwick Boseman's death.

Following the actor's tragic passing, Marvel Studios chose not to recast his Black Panther. Instead, the hero died off-screen in the MCU, and 2022's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ended with the reveal that he has a son, also called T'Challa.

In an interview with Phase Zero (via Toonado.com), X-Men '97 supervising director Jake Castorena was asked if there was a reason T'Chaka was depicted as Black Panther after the short-lived Fantastic Four: The Animated Series featured the T'Challa version (that show is presumably part of the same universe as this revival).

"I will elaborate on as much of it as I can. Some of the Black Panther of it all are definitely closed doors conversations that I wasn't privy to. That was definitely in Beau [DeMayo] and the executives' realm," the director explained. "But for us, there's always multiple timelines right there. There's always a one off. 'This is exactly how I like it, except for that one thing.'"

"So, who's to say what timeline is the right timeline, the proper timeline? I mean, y'all aren't ready for how we're gonna **** you up in season two. At the end, we tease it at the end of 10. We're gonna have to elaborate on that."

"At least for myself, this is set in the nineties. If T'Challa is the natural successor and is more of our era now, he would have still been a kid at that time. And while it is sort of retcon-y, based on what nineties series you watch, whether it was Fantastic Four...I believe it was just Fantastic Four that even had T'Challa," Castorena added.

"And that was before T'Chaka was like assassinated, or if there was a back in time thing, but I remember they did T'Challa. But, that's the best thing about our sandbox and multiple universes. For us, it just felt right."

It's a decent enough explanation, though it still feels like there's more to this than meets the eye (former X-Men '97 showrunner Beau DeMayo responded with "NDA" when a fan asked about the change on X).

In Marvel Studios' defence, not recasting T'Challa right now makes sense, particularly as any actor who plays him will be expected to live up to Chadwick Boseman's unforgettable performance. The actor's death is also still fresh in the minds of many. Regardless, for all we know, T'Challa is waiting in the wings, ready to take over from his father!

For the time being, though, it seems he's off-limits in the MCU.

Look, I get that the decision was probably something he had no say over and he can't do anything, but to stand behind it publically, if he doesn't want to get in trouble. But, trying to play it off as "T'Challa would still be a kid in the 90's" is ridicilous, when every single other character is their typical canon age. Like, in this universe T'Challa is one of the legacy heroes with the likes of Kamala Khan and Miles Morales?

I guess I didn’t notice one way or the other. Had no idea it was T’Chaka. I’m curious what I missed.

@PatientXero - He was unmasked on a screen talking to the President and has gray temples. Cap call T'Chaka.

They should've just had it be T'Challa and not have over-thought it.

@soberchimera - whats [frick]ing wrong with Tchaka. its a alternate universe. let them mofos have fun and continue to entertain us. im sure the answer will come as he said.

@supermanrex - So this entire show is in an alternate universe? If that’s the case I am relieved. With this article, I was just thinking about what we have here if the X-Men, and by that I mean the core X-Men are in their prime in the 90s and I presume the movies will be set in present day.

@RolandD - this a a continuation of the cartoon in the 90s loooooooong before the mcu was a thing. this is definately without a doubt not mcu universe unless they pulls some crazy out of the blue shit in season 2 and throw these guys into the mcu timeline ala how the FF will be introduced.

@supermanrex - What’s wrong with using T’Challa then? Again, you’re overthinking it.
supermanrex
supermanrex - 5/23/2024, 9:39 AM
@soberchimera - you are over thinking it. its a small cameo part for one. two its a separate universe. three Tchalla is everywhere in all mediums. Tchaka is the OG panther so why not give him a little bit of sunshine here and there. hell thomas wayne was running around as batman in DC. its okay to have alternate takes on shit in ALTERNATE UNIVERSES. that's the whole point.
RolandD
RolandD - 5/23/2024, 9:55 AM
@supermanrex - Thanks and that was what I had always assumed but some of the comments sounded as though that wasn’t the case.
soberchimera

@supermanrex - There's nothing to overthink, T'Challa was the Black Panther in the 90s Fantastic Four series ( https://marvelanimated.fandom.com/wiki/Episode:Prey_of_the_Black_Panther ). X-Men '97 obviously exists in the same universe as the other 90s Marvel series as we saw Spider-Man, Daredevil, Iron Man, Captain America, and Dr. Doom. Ergo, T'Challa should be the Black Panther in this universe.

supermanrex
supermanrex - 5/23/2024, 12:02 PM
@soberchimera - they never outright said every cartoon from the 90s was canon in this universe. the one that is obvious is spider-man because they actually did crossover in their series. even that one has to be addressed to fill in the gap of the last episode. until they say its official then i would assume its Easter egg homages to the 90s era of cartoons and not some direct canon tie in to their own cartoons.
soberchimera
soberchimera - 5/23/2024, 12:09 PM
@supermanrex - I mean the supervising director basically said it was an executive decision not a creative one. Corporations are weird about their IP, Justice League Unlimited couldn’t even use Black Manta because of the failed Aquaman pilot and they had to create a new character called Devil Ray. And the 90s Spider-Man cartoon couldn’t use Sandman or Electro because of the James Cameron film that never materialized ( Electro did show up very late in the series).

If I were Marvel I would just retire the black panther character entirely!!! It’s really the only respectful way to handle a situation like this
TheGrayGhost

BoBiggHHB3

@BobbyDrake - The character T'challa continuing to exist across media in Marvel is not disrespectful to the memory of Boseman. Actors pass and life goes on. It did when Christopher Reeves passed, when Adam West passed when Sean Connory passed etc.

I been a Black Panther fan since the 80s and it sucks to see how Marvel is sidelining and (pretty much) erasing T'challa across media because a actor passed away.

@BoBiggHHB3 - jack Kirby got sidelined for years Stan lee took credit in movies it’s no surprise there’s only one movie have jack Kirby credit think it was antman if jack Kirby is not credit in fantastic four movie if they plan input Stan lee name in there in credits will not be surprise
MG0019
MG0019 - 5/22/2024, 8:54 PM
@BoBiggHHB3 - Yes!!!

It makes no sense.

Yes it’s sad Boseman passed away. But he wouldn’t want the Character to die! Black Panther has existed for decades before Boseman. It’s not disrespectful to have another Black Panther, or T’Challa.

My dad died last September. Loved Earth Wind & Fire. That was “his” music. My sisters haven’t dared to listen to a song since. I understand. And yet I went the other way. I’ve been listening to Boogie Wonderland for a while now. And feeling good while it’s on. Of course I think of him, and get sad. But Dad Wouldn’t Want Me To Be Sad All The Time. And he certainly wouldn’t want to take away Earth Wind & Fire from me! If anything, it honors the positive person he was by carrying on.

So let T’Challa live on already Marvel, sheesh.

I dont get it. One thing is praise Boseman’s Version of the character, but I dont understand why they dont allowed this Version in X-men 97. Its some kind of protection?

They can kill T'Chaka next season during AvX or Onslaught, depending on how they go, bringing T'Challa into the fold and setting up a BP/Storm/Forge love triangle to replace the Wolverine/Jean/Cyclops one

Bring T'Challa back,it's been too long without him in the MCU.

Just recast the role for Secret Wars.

Marvel needs to get past Chadwick Boseman‘s death. He was an actor, who played a character. The character didn’t die, the actor did and it’s a disservice to the actor’s work to sideline a character that meant so much to him.
RitoRevolto
RitoRevolto - 5/22/2024, 4:32 PM
Ok. Well. If all of the animated 90s series are in one universe, that explanation of theirs doesn't make sense as T'Challa definitely showed up in the Fantastic Four series and was Black Panther. I don't get why they couldn't use T'Challa for this show specifically when he's still very much present in the comics and featured in several video games.
BoBiggHHB3
BoBiggHHB3 - 5/22/2024, 4:40 PM

Arthorious
Arthorious - 5/24/2024, 2:34 PM
@RitoRevolto - agreed this is just something they neglectful did. T’Challa has been established in the X-men universe so it makes no sense why he isn’t here now
