The final moments of X-Men: Days of Future Past is a heartwarming, geek-out worthy sequence in which it is revealed that the X-Men timeline has been altered drastically and previously deceased characters, namely Cyclops and Jean Grey, have been brought back to life. When Vulture asked producer/screenwriter Simon Kinberg if the character rebirths were always planned, he responded: "I went back recently — like two days ago, because I've been in Baton Rouge and my brain's been in Fantastic Four — I put my brain back into Days of Future Past, and I looked at my original outline for the movie, which was dated exactly two years before we're premiering the movie: May 10th, 2012. The original outline, the first thing anyone read — the studio, the producers, anyone — it was something me and Matthew Vaughan worked on together. In that original outline, the characters that come back at the end of this movie came back. For me, the fun of this movie from when I said, 'We should do Days of Future Past,' was literally the scene of changing the future and Jean is going to come back and Jean and Wolverine are going to have a reunion. Mainly because I carry such guilt over X-Men: [The Last Stand]. The way we killed Jean in X3 haunts me because I love the Dark Phoenix saga so much."

Does he have any regrets about X-Men: The Last Stand? "It was a missed
opportunity," he replied. "That and Days of Future Past are my 2 favorite X-Men runs. So, I feel like what we did on 'Dark Phoenix' was not make it the 'Dark Phoenix' movie. We made 'The Cure' movie with 'Dark Phoenix' as a subplot. If I was going to do it now, and if we were doing it now because comic book movies are different, the darkness and the drama of that story would be differently supported." He  then recalled killing off Cyclops, played by James Marsden, in X-Men: The Last Stand. "People love Cyclops in the comics. Jimmy does an admirable job. Not to make this about X3, but in X3 we did what we did with Cyclops partly because had a schedule nightmare. He was making, ironically, Superman with Bryan. We had a week with him and we needed to make a decision to integrate him into the film then lose him."

On teasing the audience with mutant deaths in the opening X-Men: Days of Future Past sequence and later in the film, Simon Kinberg says there was definitely a line. "The thing that's tricky about that is, you don't want the audience to think, 'Every time someone dies it's a trick, so I don't want to emotionally invest in them anymore.' But we wanted to establish Kitty's power as we've defined it, both visually and dramatically, as opposed to just verbally. And there's something radical about starting a movie with a bunch of characters and seeing how badass the villains, the Sentinels, are." On Wolverine surviving drowning, Kinberg says, "That was part of the challenge. Bryan and I asked, 'How do you actually put Wolverine in real jeopardy?' Not just getting shot or blown up. Bryan had some science for how the lungs would rebuild themselves."

On the brief moment in the opening sequence of Days of Future Past where Iceman and Kitty Pryde make eye contact and what it means for the love triangle they had with Rogue in The Last Stand, Kinberg says: "It's a really astute catch because that's absolutely the intention. That is its own complicated thing because we shot a sequence with Rogue [for Days of Future Past]. But Rogue in that future, where Kitty and Bobby are living as refugees, is gone. She's gone from their lives. Even in the version we shot with Rogue, she was gone from their lives. And in the darkness and sadness of losing so many of their friends, and specifically Rogue, Bobby and Kitty ended up together. That's totally the intention of that look. We debated that look — would it confuse audiences? Would it look like a plan they're conceiving? It's just meant to be an emotional character moment between them. It's a subtle read. And the idea is that, once we've reset the world with the events of 1973, there was never a world in which their friends and Rogue were killed. So he never strayed from Rogue. He stayed with her as plotted in the original movies." He continued, "Shit like that, in the whole movie with all the time travel stuff — what would have happened, what did happen, what changed — there's a rationale behind pretty much everything in the movie. We talked about a ton. I've never talked so much about a movie while making it."

About the scene where Quicksilver, played by Evan Peters, tells Magneto his mother knew a guy with his metal-controlling power, Simon Kinberg, laughing, says it was a little tease. "You know the intention of that tease. Hardcore fans will know. Some people who get that Magneto is a bit of a playboy will know." And finally, in the final shot in X-Men: Days of Future Past before the credits roll it is revealed that Stryker is actually Mystique. "We really wanted to do something subtle with Stryker in this movie," he said. "We wanted it to be the beginning of the origin of him. He's in the shadows most of this film. In some ways, Stryker was included in order to trigger something for Wolverine. How would it impact Wolverine, going back in time and seeing this guy who is going to manipulate him in the future. That was just interesting. Stryker's been interesting in the books and the Brian Cox version was fantastic. But the last moment in the movie with the Mystique reveal… there's for sure more to that. As we follow the characters in to X-Men: Apocalypse, we have to address that and make it a real thing."

let me get out the one dissapointing thing... i didnt get a GOTG trailer before the film...man..i was really dissapointed ..anyway..let me tell my history with the films..im a casual x men movie fan..i havent watched them in a while and i wasnt able to rewatch them before i went to the film ,in short I like X1,X2,First Class and The Wolverine and i dislike X3 and Origins ,OK, once the title credits hit and the old x men film theme hit,i was back to being 7 years old and i remembered that theme and i havent seen those films in a while and it was great.. the tone was great..they were subtle bits of humor that i really liked...the future scenes very well done and u felt the despair in the characters.. the 70s stuff was so good.the performances were amazing....i stand up and applaud James McAvoy..he is so fantastic in the film..u felt his pain and this is a broken man and him regaining hope again is a great arc for the character..Mystique's arc was great.. her trying to do what she felt was right..Everyone of these characters had a motivation that u could understand and the emotional scenes are so well done..Fassbender is great.Jackman is great.EVERYONE IS FANTASTIC and the Quicksilver scene was AMAZING... he was very funny too..just great stuff.its my second favorite superhero film of the year ,CAP 2 is still my favorite mostly because Cap is a character that i love so much and he is close to my heart..my only concern is if casual moviegoers will understand and not be confused by some things in the film..someone who has not seen an xmen film ever and went to see this would be confused..thats my only concern but Again ,GREAT , JUST PHUCKING GREAT MOVIE!!!, also the post credits scene: EN SABAH NUR!!!!, that is all,2014 so far is a great year for superhero films, CAP 2 AND DOFP have made it a great year for superhero films on their own,I liked TASM2 but it had big problems,i didnt care for max dillon but electro imo was very good..harry was great but his arc was rushed ,same with Dillon and it is all over the place, there is alot going on but i think it comes together fine and i was satisfied, the character moments were great , the relationships, humor were great, i liked the characters etc....so far,so good for me, hopefully Guardians of the Galaxy ends the summer for superhero films in a great way by giving us a great ,if not just good film

@Cherry

Close

But for me Thanos post credit scene in avengers takes the cake, cause I wouldn't never thought they will ever lead into him fighting the avengers in the future..... That's kind of a super BIG deal to me

Apocalypse credit scene was cool, but I've been waiting almost 15 years for him to pop up in the Xmen movies...... It was one of those "about damn time" for me

Ah to each their own!
Showcasing Apoc's powers and his four horseman was such a Fangasm for me! Thanos intro was cool but it was just a big head smiling.

Remember those reports we heard way back that said Apocalypse would basically possesses Magneto, and make Magneto the big bad guy in Age of Apocalypse? Tell me those we're false reports...

I think The Avengers mid-credit scene is my favorite one yet, with DOFP in very close 2nd. Although I'm looking forward to seeing Apocalypse a little bit more than Thanos.

@Pasto

We can't confirm or deny those rumors because we haven't seen anything hinting or leading towards that. It's possible that Azazel, Banshee, Wolverine and Emma can be horsemen seeing that eh passed away and etc, however I still think Gambit could be one as well. If they're going based on the AoA (yeah, yeah I know when does fox ever go by the comics 100%?) but hearing that they've been reading the massive textbook of the AoA storyline makes me think that we could possible find Magneto leading the X-Men and etc for once. Who knows but of course that rumor still lingers of being true or false.

I know mcnyagano didn't like Warpath

But I actually thought he was pretty cool and was good in his scenes

I wish we had another good ten more minutes of future scenes with the new mutants

No actor in this movie was terrible

Yea, this was a really good X-Men movie! I put it up there with X2(can't decide which one is better) and yes to fixing the f uck ups from previous movies, and glad they're brought back Jean & Scott(hopefully he we the leader/badass he is in the comics)

The After-Credit scene was....ok

The avengers after credit scene was pretty cool but a bit overrated IMO. So many people didn't even know that was. Iron Man takes the #1 spot.

@Jojo

Yeah the futuristic scenes were 30% of the film hitting at the beginning middle and end. But I had to keep in my mind the entire time that they were meant to be of that length seeing that the past played a more important role.
DaVinci31
DaVinci31 - 5/25/2014, 7:57 AM
Was I the only one that was upset with the ending?

They finally had their chance to become better, and have a reason to shift everyone and everything, but no they had to keep the Logan/Jean love story and Scott as the jealous boyfriend. I feel as if they only believe their major mistakes lie within X-Men: The Last Stand, when really they go as far back as the series itself.

I do love this quote though, "I've never talked so much about a movie while making it," this was very apparent throughout the film and made it deserving of a 4.5/5 for me. Almost every situation and character were used efficiently.
JoJo1982
JoJo1982 - 5/25/2014, 7:57 AM
Mystique basically wanted to kill Trask cause of the death of her lover..... azrazel, that was pretty much obvious

Plus that only confirm to me that Nightcrawler was born between first class and DOFP

So we might be seeing more of nightcrawler and mystique's relationship in xmen apocalypse
marvel72
marvel72 - 5/25/2014, 7:57 AM
best mid credit/after the credits scenes

1st the avengers (thanos)
2nd x-men days of future past (apocalypse)
3rd iron man (nick fury)
4th thor the dark world (the collector)
5th iron man 2 (thor's hammer)

not sure if i could of included captain america the first avenger mid credit scene which was the avengers teaser.
