Lucas Till On Havok In X-Men: First Class

At the red carpet for the premier of Battle: LA, About.com managed to nab Lucas Till for a few quotes on X-Men: First Class. And fair play to em they got straight to the point, asking Till straight out why Cyclops isn't a part of the movie since they are brother of a similar age in the comics..

You've got X-Men: First Class coming up. Why isn't Cyclops in it when your backstories are tied together?

Lucas Till: "They're supposed to be and they're going a different direction, but it's still ambiguous."

Did you think that was kind of strange?

Lucas Till: "No, not really because I want to see new characters. You know, I can watch X-Men all the time. I can watch those movies over and over again, I can watch the animated series, but I want to see a new film, completely new characters. You've got Beast and Mystique and they're just solid. They have to be in the storyline. But you bring in Alex Summers, you bring in Angel Salvadore - which is a brand new character I've never even heard of - you know, Banshee, those are fan favorites so it's going to be neat."

So still no more enlightened as to the exact nature of the Summer's relationship in the movie. But it's pretty clear there will be SOME connection.

Comedian03 @ How could u be looking forward to this movie???

The trailer looks horrible and everything is messed up?

Fingers crossed this BOMBS!

It doesn't deserve nothing else.

Lee can't distinguish between a bad trailer and a trailer that doesn't meet HIS requirements. He wants Alex [frick]ing Planktier from I Am Number 4 for Angel for God's sake! That should tell you all you need to know.

If you don't think this looks good at least have real reasons and not fanboy gripes. All I have heard from anyone that complain about this is moans about the stuff they SHOULD have done differently and no comment on how the actual quality of the film seems to be shaping up. Are you movie fans? Or just comic fans that like seeing the pictures plastered on the screen as per your DEMANDS?

Whatever, it's funny to me. I just look forward to this movie being awesome and STILL getting flack.

This movie is a SLAP IN THE FACE @ Ror and you know it!

Comedian03 @ Would you like an AVENGERS movie with just Iron Man in and Jarvis as his Mother?

Didn't think so lol, thats all this is, pity FOX had a chance to actually turn the X-Franchise around.

MARVEL STUDIOS or bust!

What true fan wouldn't want this back where it belongs, in the real Marvel Cinematic Universe!

All this movie is, is a disgrace!

i with you,mate.

have you notice that it fine to say that the movie looks good, great or even awesome by the look of the trailer.

but you can't say its going to be shit from veiwing the same two minute trailer.

dfresh - 3/11/2011, 6:17 AM
@marvel, it's more so because it's obvious you were not going to like this movie, no matter what happened in that trailer. The double standards that are used to judge this movie compared to Marvel movies are humorous. If you just don't like the character lineup, so be it. But your frustration over the lack of characters has led to some other pretty amazing criticisms.

You can say whatever you like, but if you don't have legit and valid reasons for saying it then we can't have a debate about it. I can't argue with "It sucks cos its a slap in the face cos they didn't use the right characters" because there is no logic there. It's an impenetrable defense against common sense. Give me some reasons as to why the actual movie looks BAD and not just fanboy bad and we can discuss it:)

I especially enjoy when people talk about Fox Studios having no idea what they are doing when it comes to film making, marketing, etc. and Marvel really gets it. Meanwhile, Fox has about 10 best picture Oscars and countless nominations (2 this past year), and Marvel has made 3 movies.

Different universe, different universe, different universe. AoA, AoX, Earth X, Ruins, etc., They're all different, and so is the movieverse. It's not my favorite "verse" out there but I'm ok with it. Hell, in AoA Cyclops and Havok were bad guys!!! That seems way worse than changing their relationship so as to allow Havok to be in the film.

While I agree with Ror that one should have 'legit and valid reasons' for disliking it, I think that lack of a character you like is sure as heck a legit reason for not liking it.

I think Lord of the Rings was very well made, but not so well written because of what they did to essential qualities about some of the characters. I'm a purist and an artist, I like to see things the way they are. That's not a 'fanboy' response. That's the same response as a 70 year old English professor I had who isn't anything near a fanboy.

In the same way, I think its fair to say, I think its totally legit that someone bases their opinion on a movie based on the characters. I like Marvel more than DC because I like their characters better, if I didn't like the new Venom magazine because Flash Thompson is wearing the suit, its because I like Eddie Brock better, and there's nothing wrong with that. Same thing, I don't think I'm gonna like this movie because it says it is first class, but it is not first class.

I'd say the same thing if someone re-did changed a major character in a David Copperfield movie.

To @Schemer's point, I don't want to speak for Ror, but I can't help myself. Gotta interject.

The point he's making is it is fine if someone doesn't like the prospect of the movie because of the character makeup, but that doesn't make the movie "suck." That means you personally might not enjoy it as much, but how can that be enough for it to be classified as a bad movie?

That's when some folks start to come up with off the wall and illogical reasoning for why the movie will be FAIL. Just based on personal bias.

I get on these forums daily. I read the comments and I know the gripes, but I cant fathom why the hate? I'm an AVID collector of Marvel Comics. I know the stories, I know the histories and I respect the genre. We can quiz each other all day on it.

What I know from the comics is that every single writer gets on board and tries to take the characters into different areas and experiment. Its the essence of the character that must stay the same. Havok will be connected to Scott. Heck, even in the comics, they made reference to them being a part of a bigger scheme (Sinister). Its possible to have them just be test tube relatives that will share a connection to the Sinister love of Summer blood corruption. (There is even a storyline suggesting Gambit was related to Sinister created Summer brothers). I know the characters aren't the "First Class" from the comics but the only thing they share in common is the name. Vaughn has stated this is not the First Class from the comics. This is a different take on the characters. The cartoons from the 90's had a different line-up, the original 60's comics had a different lineup, Giant size X-men introduced a different lineup, Age of Apocolaypse, The new X-Men cartoon and Fox's version.

Every decade we get a new line-up and a new story and so on. All I know is that the last time I seen Havok in a tv show/movie it was a horrible ABC show and his character was wack. I'll take ANYTHING over nothing and I'm just glad these movies are being made .

As a film fan, I think this film is shaping up to be a belter. I haven't seen the trailer but from the stills and posters I've seen, it looks like they're putting quite a bit of effort into it. I couldn't give a rats arse what mutants are and are not in it, I'm more looking forward to seeing how the relationship between Charles and Erik disintegrates to the point that they become enemies.
SeaSerpentine

I guess because it's an alternate universe that makes it a better film. So does that mean films like Batman and Robin, Catwoman, Superman IV, Captain America (1990), and Roger Corman's Fantastic Four can now be reguarded as classics.

@SeaSerp, you're missing the point, we're not saying because it's an alternate universe that it is a better film, just that it's a reasoning we have for not getting hung up on the whole "real first class" lineup. There are other factors that determine a movie's quality.

Well, I guess the release day will be the end all/be all. If it sucks it sucks, and if it doesn't it doesn't. Still wouldn't mind Marvel having the X-Men, just so we could see some crazy crossovers.

@ MovieTheaterLad I never got around to reading the Ultimate stuff. I did read ABOUT it though and found out that pretty much all the X-Men die, lol. I'll have to check it out.

@ everyone thats for this movie

you can like whatever you want, but just take a look at fox track record of comic book movies.

aliens vs predator
aliens vs predator 2
daredevil
elektra
fantatic four
fantastic four 2
x-men
x-men 2
x-men 3
x-men origins wolverine

they haven't made one great comic book movie, this movie began filming in september 2010 & its gets released in june 2011 so everything has been rushed just to make a quick buck it will be a complete mess.

byran singer his done alot to help comic movies remember bailing out of the x-men films to ruin superman.

of all the characters in the x-universe that they could of picked they chose these ones.

characters that most people don't give a shit about, fox loves to change things for the worse from nationality, powers, origins & relationships.

remember what they did to galactus & deadpool, don't get me wrong i can except slight changes but fox does take the piss.

if its a crime to see the characters that i love portrayed correctly from the comics, then arrest me.

but i'm not paying to see this,i give my money to a movie that actually deserves my hard earned cash.
siddhant1138
siddhant1138 - 3/11/2011, 7:17 AM
My personal opinion:

didn't think they should have made banshee american, but that's really my only beef with it so far. im not even mad about the so called continuity changes, because i see the x-men film universe as a separate universe from the comicbooks, like ultimate vs uncanny, etc.

im actually glad this has nothing to do with the 'first class' series, because that was pretty terrible if you ask me.... sure, id like to see a movie with the original crew, but that cant happen because of how they introduced drake and worthington as teens, jean and scott as adults, and hank as somebody much older in the trilogy.

as for havok as scott's (not) brother, im curious to see what they do, not entirely happy about the fact the the continuity is completely off in that respect, but i really dont think it could be helped. i really just want to see what they do with alex summers as a character, i can see him becoming a big hit amongst non-readers (what with having the most BAMF power alongside azazel in this movie, pun intended)

my prediction: the haters who have set out to hate it from the start will say they hate it no matter what, a good majority will like it though, and overall, i think it'll be pretty damn good. probably the best x-men film till date.

but of course, only time will tell
TheSchemer
TheSchemer - 3/11/2011, 7:29 AM
@dfresh: I agree with you there. I try to never make a final decision on a movie/book/whatever, until I've seen the whole thing. But based on the track record of movies that get away from the comics too much (Notice I say too much, I don't care if things are adapted, that's needed, but don't run away from the essentials), my feeling is that this movie isn't gonna be a good one. I could be wrong.

And no, I don't live my life being bummed out constantly. Holding out for more than the minimum makes it all the more worth while when something great comes along. Dark Knight for example.
LFANCH

I don't really think the "first class" name is that big a deal. Weren't cyclops and jean xaviers first students? It looks to me like this is going to be before xavier even has students, or a school for that matter. So this is like a pre-xmen movie. Wasn't xavier in a wheelchair in the actual first class? i believe so. So obviously this is before the comics first class.
AlcoholicA
AlcoholicA - 3/11/2011, 7:37 AM
@ LFANCH It's a little bit more complicated than that though. Based on the posters and stuff he clearly has a school of some sort going on, uniforms and all. And he has a group of teen mutants he will be guiding, not to mention the first "CLASS" part. I just think that considering the "first class" comics came out not too long ago and have cemented the term "first class" with the original five, then they take that name and put it on a movie without the original five was lame. It's not going to ruin my movie experience or anything, just thought they could have been a little more original.
