X-Men: First Class charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events. Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Not archenemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to prevent nuclear Armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men.

By Simon Mirodau of Quickflix:

With The Dark Knight, we got the first great Batman movie. With Spider-Man 2, we got the first great Spider-Man movie. We’re still waiting for the first great X-Men movie. Although the mutant Marvel heroes should be a more than adequate mine for motion-picture material, all five film adaptations have come up short. Bryan Singer’s X-Men was bold, but devoid of action. X2 gave us some thrilling sequences, but betrayed its ensemble cast. X3: The Last Stand was...directed by Brett Ratner. X-Men Origins: Wolverine had memory erasing bullets. Needless to say, the series was a fixer-upper by the time Matthew Vaughn was brought on board to helm X-Men: First Class.

If any franchise warranted rebooting, it was this one. Yet First Class fails in much the same way as its predecessors did (or should that be ‘sequels’, considering this one is a prequel?). Although the cast is excellent, and there are a number of nifty hero moments sorely lacking in the other features, the script feels slapdash and the direction shoddy. I had hoped Vaughn would breathe some life into this comic adaptation, as he did in the first half of the joyfully anarchic Kick-Ass. Instead, he falls back on the bad habits he picked up in the second half of that film, where he forgot he was making a razor sharp satire and spoof of cheesy, self-righteous comic book movies, and just made a cheesy, self-righteous comic book movie.

Although the picture takes place in the shadow of those infamous thirteen days, there is no sense of impending doom, or even a ticking clock to keep the stakes high. This is not the intriguing alternate version of events I had hoped to see; there are no stimulating ‘what if?’ scenarios to ponder like there was in Watchmen. Vaughn and co-writer Jane Goldman (working on a script by Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz) don’t even take advantage of the civil rights movement of the time. The plight of the X-Men has always been paralleled with that of the LGBT community, and although the ‘coming out of the closet’ analogies remain (“mutant and proud”, as they clumsily remind one another) it comes across without any of the poignancy seen in Singer’s first two pictures. Frankly, this film only feels like it takes place in the sixties because of all the cleavage being revealed by the female cast members.

Don’t get me wrong; it’s not without highlights. McAvoy and Fassbender are charming foils for one another. If only Vaughn had spent more time fleshing out their relationship, instead of introducing us to countless other mutants that we won’t even get to know long enough to care about. Lawrence is great as the soon-to-be-Mystique, and gives gravitas to a character that seemed to only be included in previous films because she was naked all the time. Nicholas Hoult is also solid as Beast/Hank McCoy, even though he’s given the lion’s share of terrible lines. The villains fare worse. Kevin Bacon seems to have officially transformed into Gary Cole (which isn’t as awesome as it sounds) and the less said about January Jones (as ice queen Emma Frost) the better.

Before you call me out on it, yes, it’s true, I did indeed give Wolverine a positive review back in 2009. It was a different time! Barack Obama had just become president! We were all filled with blind hope! I recognise my wrongs now, and see many of the same issues present once again in X-Men: First Class. The action sequences feel undercooked (the best one rips off the expert opening from X2); the tension is non-existent; the tone inconsistent. Vaughn hints that he’s aiming for an ‘Adam West’s Batman’ style X-Men film, but just when he starts to have a little fun, you can practically feel him pull back, lest he get too campy or weird. Or fun. At least slashfiction fans will find a veritable treasure trove of sequences featuring Fassbender and McAvoy to inspire some saucy material. At least until the inevitable sequel rolls around. Sixth times a charm?

2.5/5

With this review also, the rate given on the site Rotten Tomatoes has dropped to 96% (previously 100%). But of course reviews aren't everything; judge the movie by yourself after its release. Anyway, follow the link below to check out the full review which contains a little minor spoilers.

With the cast of James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Lucas Till, Caleb Landry Jones, and Kevin Bacon, X-Men: First Class is set to hit theatres on June 3!

At least they got MAGNETO's helmet right at last after 3 films!!!

@LEEE Empire's considerably still good, though not great but it's not overally negative!

@JBatesy Nothing but he also said that he just realized that he was totally wrong...well yeah.

@LeeShard

Empire's review was mediocre-to-positive.
But if you look at Rotten Tomatoes, their review swung more to the positive side than it did to the negative side.

I just knew they would cop out of this. I just knew it!!
For all the talk about Martin Luther King and Malcom X no reference to them whatsoever.

Watching the clips this sounds about right. A great cast but they were given **** material to work with.

EMPIRE gave superman returns 5 stars! I will never trust anything they say. Plus like JBatesyFilmreviews says, He gave wolverine a positive! WTF! I couldn't even finish that film it was so bad!

I am going to pay NO attention to this. especially as its rated 96% on rotten tomatoes so far!

this review doesn't make the film sound that bad. he just sounds especially annoyed by the absence of the civil rights movement and lgbt movement from that time period that influenced the original x-men comics. which is completely understandable, because that's basically what the x-men symbolize. bryan singer and ian mckellen both being gay made the first two that much more powerful.

I don't trust this guy's opinion at all. I'm fine with negative reviews for movies which I think look good, but this was a bad review. Thumbs down.

@itbegins2005: i agree with you there. he sounds somewhat intelligent talking about the civil rights and lgbt stuff, then loses all credibility when he tries to retract his own shitty review to look cool. what a dbag. haha. overall, i'll still see this, but i'm not expecting it to be the definitive x-men movie we're all hoping for.

@cross: how do you figure? the first film is genius, and the second was even better. singer actually paid attention to the themes i mentioned, which makes the x-men even easier to relate to for a large number of people. or is that why you didn't like it? which in that case, you'd be a bigoted moron.

@itbegins2005: haha. i agree again, man. apparently, a serious superhero film means the film is cheesy, takes itself too seriously, and is completely self-righteous. this guy is full of awesome and worthwhile things to say.

@weneedrevelation: pretty much nothing. just like any negative review. or positive review for that matter. it's just a person's opinion for moviegoers to decide whether or not to see a film. unless the reviews are unanimously positive or negative, they really influence nothing.

Thor got a lot of negative reviews too, ya know.

so well, point is, all good movies usually have negative reviews too. But I dont remember an article like this existing when Thor came out....or maybe I am wrong.

Either way, I dont think I should be defending the movie. From what I can see and the cast AND the director, this movie looks like its well worth watching. I'm pretty confidant this'll be a really good movie. Collider reviews are always on the spot for me, and so I'm pretty sure I'll love it.

I agree w/ the fact that Fox give us too many mutants w/ no importance to the stories in all X-Men movies, and that steals time and quality for the storyline

Ranger14 - 5/31/2011, 5:27 AM
The thing is this one reviewer shows he has knowledge of the X-Men universe and prior films. The other reviews are pretty much reviewers who don't care about the X-men, they are just watching a film for whatever it is, which is fine. Typically, most reviewers aren't going to care about the X-Men canon. This one does. Kudos for him to want to have a decent adaption of the X-Men as opposed to just being a decent movie.

@LEEE Can't say bud, I mean no matter how FOX has [frick]ed up things, VAUGHN is still a great director!

As a movie, hate it or not, it's still good at least if not great.

And yeah...but DREDD is still pretty far right?

"Before you call me out on it, yes, it’s true, I did indeed give Wolverine a positive review back in 2009."

Stopped believing anything this person wrote there. Joke journalist, joke critic.

As Ror said, sounds more like he's trying to make up for giving Wolverine a good review.

If this guy gave Wolverine a positive review, I give no credit to one word he said in this review. This review is garbage. Now the haters have something to cling to...

I cant believe this film is only the fourth film Matthew Vaughn has directed in his career. And what's a couple mediocre review amongst a swarm of positive ones?

This seems like it's gunna be a hell of a lot better than all the other X films, which is good enough for me.

Anyway, he gave Wolverine a good review (I didn't mind it, but it was just a bit better than a popcorn flick IMO), plus he described Spider-Man 2 as a 'great Spider-Man movie'. Spider-Man 2 was a good film, and the best in Raimi's series, but it was by no means great when compared to, for example The Dark Knight, which he calls the 'great Batman film', or even as good as any of Marvel Studios' films. Or maybe it's just great compared to the previous X films?

IMO anyway. He seems to know quite a bit about the source material, or has at least googled it to back up his points. Yeah it'd be cool to see parallels between MLK and Malcolm X in there, but in a film that convers WWII and 1963, as well as probably at least introducing each character to the audience along with conveying the main story of the film, it probably wouldn't fit in.
They could even include all that at the beginning of a sequel, maybe with an analogy to MLK's death in '68 to get the ball rolling and then have the rest of the film skip to the 70s.

@Ror and UltimateIronAngelX, agree with both of you there guys.

I've the positive reviews and the tv spots look good. I'll be the final judge for myself. Also, this guys gave Wolverine a positive review because of "We were all filled with blind hope!" Ok, gotcha! This movie looks good and only seeing will tell if it's great!

if the guy gave this movie 4/5 or 5/5 you'll be singing his praises, but soon as he gives a bad reveiw he doesn't know what he's talking about.

how do any of us know that he may of actually got this reveiw rating right.

well it was bound to happen but still x-men has defied all odds to become one of the best reviewed movies so far,if x-men can remain fresh in RT which I believe it will it deserves loads of applause.any summer movie that can stay even marginally fresh even (60%)is great because it's not easy to please critics and make a fun great action movie.

looks to me x-men is going to be a well reviewed movie like THOR and that is very encouraging :)

but I do disagree with one thing in the review first x-men and the second were AWESOME movies.

This movie is going to suck. This is not an X-Men film. All you "Fans" of the X-men that are content with this crap are not fans.

If you like this movie as a good movie, fine thats cool but dont act for one second like this is the real X-Men or that they will be done any justice. Your head is up your ass if you do. The cast is great the rest is not.

This is Fox still just trying to make a buck at your expense and most of you are to dumb to get that.

Dont worry im sure in my life time I'll get to see a Marvel made X-men movie done right. However everyone of you so called "fans" that spends money on this movie keeps that prolonged for us real fans who really want a X-Men movie.

Here's a couple of other films this "critic" has given positive reviews...

Pirates of the Caribbean 4 ... 3/5
Scream 4 ... 3/5
Justin Bieber: Never Say Never ... 3.5/5
Adjustment Bureau ... 4/5
No Strings Attached ... 3.5/5

With that list do you really think I'm gonna take his review seriously when other critics that I have been reading and who I trust give it positive reviews?
