Bruce Willis' Family Offers Update On Actor's Worsening Health: "Condition Has Progressed" To Dementia

The Willis family has released a joint statement updating fans on the current condition of actor Bruce Willis, whose previous diagnosis of aphasia has progressed into frontotemporal dementia.

It's been about one year since Bruce Willis officially retired from acting. The legendary actor known for Die Hard, Pulp Fiction, and many other beloved '80s and '90s blockbusters, was previously diagnosed with aphasia, a condition that impacts your cognitive abilities, affecting your ability to speak, write, and understand language. Unfortunately, it appears that his condition has progressed.

In a joint statement, the Willis family announced that Bruce Willis has officially been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (known as FTD).

"FTD is a cruel disease that many of us have never heard of and can strike anyone. For people under 60, FTD is the most common form of dementia, and because getting the diagnosis can take years, FTD is likely much more prevalent than we know," the family wrote on The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration website.

According to Mayo Clinic, in frontotemporal dementia, portions of the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain shrink (atrophy) which can result in speech and language problems, motor disorders, and behavioral changes. There's no cure or treatment for the disease which means Willis' condition will only continue to worsen over time.

Sharing a photo of Willis smiling at the beach, the family said that they hoped Willis' diagnosis will bring more focus on the horrible disease.

"As Bruce’s condition advances, we hope that any media attention can be focused on shining a light on this disease that needs far more awareness and research," the statement said, continuing:

Bruce always believed in using his voice in the world to help others, and to raise awareness about important issues both publicly and privately. We know in our hearts that – if he could today -- he would want to respond by bringing global attention and a connectedness with those who are also dealing with this debilitating disease and how it impacts so many individuals and their families.

Bruce Willis is one of Hollywood's most accomplished stars, having scored leading roles in numerous blockbusters such as Die Hard (which spawned four sequels totaling $1.4 billion in global earnings), Pulp Fiction, The Fifth Element, Armageddon, The Sixth Sense, Sin City, Glass, The Whole Nine Yards, and many more.

At the time of his retirement last year, Willis had already filmed multiple movies which have been in various stages of production. Most recently, Willis starred in Lionsgate's Detective Knight trilogy. Independence, the third and final film in the trilogy, was released last month in select theaters and VOD.

As always, our thoughts and prayers are with Bruce Willis and his family.

It just goes to show you that no matter how much money a person has, Modern medicine isn't where it needs to be. Our countries are focused on war, greed, and colonizing instead of Growth, Evolution, and R&D. Countries will never put $2 billion in Cancer or Dementia research but will allocate $2 Billion to build a satellite with a massive laser capable of wiping out Phuket Thailand with one blast. We as humanity have lost our way. Focused on conflict and division.

I told you so, though I wish I didn’t have to.
Aphasia is only a symptom of something deeper. Unfortunately FTD is of the type where his family will see major personality changes over the next few years, so this is doubly cruel.

What a damn shame. Two of my uncles died from dementia.
You could get to their memories but it was like slowly peeling an onion and you’d only catch a glimmer of their memories if you were lucky.

Wow this makes me sad. I have always liked Bruce Willis. I’ve had relatives suffering from dementia before, but they’ve all been much older than he is. Best of luck to him and his family.

Really sad.

I've never heard anything bad about him.

I've heard that they are tracing his condition to a head injury while he was filming "Tears of the Sun".

My Nan had this,my mum use to see her every day before and after work and my nan use to say "what are you doing here, you never come to see me."

That use upset her. It's a horrible condition or whatever its classed as.

I feel sad for anyone who has to go through this, especially Bruce right now.

This type of Dementia actually is a death in the sense that all the characteristics that makes Bruce Willis who he is will be lost at an accelerated rate. This type of dementia progresses faster than Alzheimer's and it is truly one of the scariest diagnoses anyone can get.

I’ve been a fan of his since I was a kid. This sucks.

A shame his legacy got tainted with all the shit he made for the past decade, but this man is the face of classics like Die Hard, Unbreakable, Sixth Sense, among many others.
I really hope he is remember for those.
Also, kudos to Demi for taking care of him despite being divorced for over 20 years.
