Zack Snyder's "Sucker Punch" action film was released this weekend and grossed $19 million, which was only good enough for second place, behind the sequel to "Diary of a Wimpy Kid." Since "Sucker Punch" cost $82 million, the movie will have a tough time making its money back.

The original "Wimpy Kid" was released last year and grossed $75 million on a $15 million budget. The sequel opened in first place with $24.4 million, already making back its $21 million budget.

"Limitless" took third place with $15.2 million and has now grossed a total of $41 million domestically. The film cost $27 million to make. Meanwhile, "The Lincoln Lawyer," "Paul," "Red Riding Hood" and "Mars Needs Moms" are all struggling to earn back their budgets.

This time of year kids movies almost always takes first place and from what I hear the Wimpy Kid is really popular right now with kids and families. Think about it a family of 4 going to Wimpy Kid compared to 2 adults going to Sucker Punch in ticket sells.

Awful family movies tend to make a lot of money. Madagascar 2 made more than Iron Man. Shrek 2 made more than Spider-Man 2. This is nothing new, and isn't newsworthy.

@Hiraga08

Iron Man and Spider-Man 2 weren't released the same weekends as Madagascar 2 and Shrek 2, respectively. There's a difference between the cases you mentioned and the one involving Sucker Punch and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Snyder's flop is an embarrassing one indeed.

Nah, this IS newsworthy. A host of artistic resources and millions of dollars were wasted on a whim. The result of that is a mediocre movie taking the top spot over Tits and ass, robots, Zombies, Dragons and Samurai. It's unheard of, really. I hope shakes Snyder into keeping his head focused.

Whimpy kid was shown in fewer theaters and still made more money because it was actually good. Thats the difference. Sailormoon had fail all over it

It's not really surprising - Snyder is famous for style over substance, and 'Sucker Punch' was no exception. And 'YES', I DID actually see the film, and it was nothing more than a sterotypical young male fantasy with a few threads to try and tie it all together. Visually it was stunning, but that was about it. With Snyder at the helm, this only makes me worry about the final outcome for the next Superman film. WB, I hope you're taking notes...

I'm not really trying to make the movie sound awesome, but I really don't get ppl talking about how incomprehensible the movie was. It was a simple to follow popcorn action flick. I would have seen it if all the characters were guys. I live in a world were women that I actually consider sexy can be seen butt naked a click away. I don't need to be titillated for 8.50 per ticket.
