About See
In the twenty-first century, a virus has wiped out a significant portion of the world's population. There are fewer than two million people who were able to avoid being killed by the virus, and all of their distant descendants have been rendered blind.
The events of See take place several centuries into the future, when society has developed new ways to interact socially, construct, hunt, and otherwise survive without sight. These new ways include: Any discussion of the concept of vision is regarded as heresy because it has been elevated to the level of a myth.
The knowledge of the old, sighted world has been lost or corrupted, and humanity has reverted to societies that are more comparable to those that existed during the middle ages or to primitive hunter-gatherer societies. This has caused humanity to regress. Many individuals have the misconception that the gods fashioned materials such as metal, concrete, and plastic by employing supernatural methods. This misconception is held by many people.
A pregnant woman who goes by the name of Maghra makes her way into the mountains in the hopes of finding the Alkenny tribe and finding refuge with them. The Alkenny chief Baba Voss is unable to have children of his own, so he makes the decision to marry his wife and adopt her children rather than continue trying to have children of his own. Their real father, Jerlamarel, is currently on the run from the Queen of the Payan kingdom because she suspects that he is a "sighter," a member of a heretical religion that involves seeing things (the natural ability to see). A search party is dispatched to look for Jerlamarel and his offspring after the story that he is a father quickly becomes widespread and circulates as a rumor. Baba Voss has been given the responsibility of defending not only his family but also their entire tribe from the Queen's army.
