Jack Bauer is Headed to Theaters

The hit TV series, and graphic novel, 24 is making the transition to the big screen. What will that mean for the long running show?

24 is an American TV show the chronicles the life of counter-terrorism agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland). Each season of the show depicts an event that encompasses 24 real time hours; with each episode covering one hour. By the end of it's eighth season, which is currently airing, it will overpass The Avengers as the longest running espionage series on television.

Rumors of 24 transitioning from TV series to full feature film have been ongoing for years. Now, according to Variety, those rumors have substance.

Twentieth Century Fox has hired screenwriter Billy Ray (Breach, Flightplan) to pen the script for the feature version. Fox executives and producers were impressed by Ray's movie pitch, which takes Jack Bauer to Europe.

The script is said to have already gone through 24 star Kiefer Sutherland, who is also an executive producer on the series. He has expressed eagerness to turn the internationally popular TV series into a film franchise. Besides Sutherland, there are many other important people directly involved in the show who would more than likely be included in bringing the feature to fruition: Series creators Robert Cochran and Joel Surnow, executive producer Howard Gordon (Real Time Productions) and Brian Grazer's Imagine Entertainment.

24 has had a TV movie released before, titled 24: Redemption, which aired prior to the show's seventh season in 2008 and was nominated for five Emmy Awards.

No information has been released disclosing when the 24 feature film will begin production. The largest deciding factor at this point is whether Fox renews the series for another season. There is currently no contract set past season eight (which is currently showing), though Sutherland has expressed interest in returning to star. It is more than likely that producing a 24 film destined for theaters is too daunting a task while the TV series is still running.

Though a 24 film is still very much in the preliminary stages, it is definitely a movie in the right direction.

Until then, fans can continue to watch 24 on the Fox networdk, or purchase the trade paperback graphic novels available through IDW Publishing.

Not a good idea. Cramming everything into a two hour movie would be difficult.

I hope they don't use the timer,or in a two hour movie,we'll see it about every 5 minutes :-D Joking aside,i dunno how that real time stuff could work

they would certainly have to change the real time format. which i think they could do. but there have been real time movies before so it could work. either way id watch it cause bauer is one of the best t.v. characters ever.

I doubt they'd use the timer in a big film. I'm assuming they'd just sum up main characters and love interests or it'd be the door closer to the series. Like a 2 hour ending basically. There's no point of doing some type of beginning/origin of Jack when we have watched him in 8 seasons thus far. I honestly believe they will just end it with a movie. It was hoped for by the crew around season 6 (that I know of).

i mean surely he is about due for a desk job soon!

They could always have the first half of the movie be in a standard movie format. Have it build to some event then for the last hour or so go into real time.

A small two-hour emergency

Not a lot of people know this, but the film Vantage Point was initially intended to be the first 24 movie. However, Mr. Sutherland's legal problems and other factors led the studio to repackage the film.

LOL@ some of these comments...

So...Its OK to cram DAYS even YEARS of time into all these 2 HOUR Movies but we can't do 24????

Come on now...

We can't do 24 in 2 HOURS????

Are you serious?

Ofcourse we can do it....

The time doesn't have to always been shown just like it isn't in the tv show till a commercial.

I was JUST saying yesterday that they should Make this a Movie and I wake up to news of it ACTUALLY HAPPENING!

WOW!

I say go for it!

But use the Cast from the Show...Whoever remains from this season ofcourse.

I love 24 but it really stoped being good after Season 5...the sixth season was awful, season 7 was good but mainly because they brought Tony back and the latest season, although also good, fells a bit like I've seen it all before. A ninth season and movie to finish the show on a high note would be great though! :)

@Josh: Season 8 has been kick ass so far. The story is solid and the action is a little bit slicker this time around. Definitely catch in online if you haven't seen it yet.

I just hope they give Jack some bite in this film. This season all he's done is play babysitter to a fracked up Renee. Too bad we'll never get to see 8 3hr movies!

Jack Bauer is my Hero!!!

This could absolutely work, but they better hurry up, Kiefer is no spring chicken......they shudda gave him a son instead of a daughter so he could've passed the torch.

Yea....someone said cramming a whole story into a feature film wouldn't work. They'd make it work, but I agree the pizazz may fall away. That being said I'd be the guy in the tent the night before. This is and has been my favorite show since the beginning of season 2. This show floored me. People who don't know....YO ASS BETTUH CAAAAAALLLLLLLLL SOMEBODY!!!!!!!!! Haha.

Jack Bauer was one of the best things to happen in TV history, and Kiefer is that f**king good to get him there.

Remeber they did an x-files movie right in the middle of the show. It came out during the summer and bridged the two seasons around it so they could do the same with 24. Redemption could easily have been a theatre release with a bigger budget.

Yeah, Man! Bring it on!
Can't get enough of 24!
By far the best TV has to offer!
Last night was amazing!
More blood in that segment
than I've seen in some 2-hour
R-rated movies!

What you basically get is 2
1-hour shows in one 2-hour movie!
I'll be in line at the theater
with bells on...why I would have
bells on I have no clue??? lol

This is AWESOME!!! I love Kiefer and I think it's about time he returned to the big screen. Things have been working out really well for him. First his bio comes out ("Kiefer Sutherland: Living Dangerously" available on amazon.com!) and now he has a big screen movie in the works. Good for him!
