Daniel Craig is set to step down as super spy 007 after 2019's untitled Bond 25 and many names have been put forward for who could replace him and there have even been talks of casting a woman has the Mi6 agent with even EON producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson commenting that there's no reason that in the future there couldn't be a female James Bond.
We did just last year get a somewhat Bond analogous female spy in the form of Charlize Theron in
Atomic Blonde, based on the graphic novel
The Coldest City in which she plays Lorraine Broughton; a hard hitting bisexual British agent operating in Berlin during the Cold War.
Speaking about potentially taking on the mantle of Bond for real in an interview with
Yahoo! the
Mad Max: Fury Road actress had this to say:
Look, that’s incredibly flattering. I’m super flattered by that. You know, I don’t have a feeling about it one way or the other. I love the idea that people are thinking outside the box. And I know for a long time people were talking about Idris Elba for it. And it’s just nice to see people now thinking outside of [these] confined ideas of what we think a character can be. I’m really all for that. I think it’s great that we are developing more characters within that genre for females, that they can take ownership. So, it’s a really nice thing for people to say. I’m very old though. I would be a very old James Bond.
Though Theron is only currently 42, by the time that a new Bond film sans Daniel Craig is ready to be made it is entirely possible that she (and other favourites like Idris Elba and Tom Hardy) may all be out of the running if EON are looking for someone to inhabit the role for a long period of time. Maybe we'll get a sequel to Atomic Blonde in that time.
What do you think? Would you have liked to have seen Charlize Theron as 007? Or would you rather see Atomic Blonde continue as a franchise to get your female British spy kick? Who would you like to see take over from Craig? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
