Javier Bardem Offered Part Of Roland In The Dark Tower

Despite rumors of Christian Bale being sought after for the role, word is that Ron Howard and Universal have already offered it to Bardem..

It looks like we may have our Roland Dechain. Deadline report that Javier Bardem(No Country For Old Men) has been offered the role of the gunslinger in Ron Howard's multi platformed adaptation of Stephen King's hugely popular novels/comic books.

From Deadline..

I'm told that Bardem has officially been offered the lead role by director Ron Howard and Universal Pictures. While formal negotiations haven't yet begun, there's a high level of enthusiasm internally that they've got their cowboy.

Viggo Mortenson was apparently a contender too, with Christian Bale mentioned in connection with the role only earlier today. Bardem was recently nominated for an Academy Award for his turn as a terminally ill street hustler in the Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu-directed Biutiful. Howard will be directing the first instalment of the franchise, and the following tv segment leading into the second movie. Deadline shed a bit more light as to what the plans are after that..

The second film will pick up where the first left off. That would be followed by a TV installment that would be a prequel that introduces Deschain as a young man. The third film brings back the original cast once again return and complete the screen trilogy. So if Bardem closes a deal, he’ll likely appear in all three films and that first TV stint.

Of course Bardem still has to accept. Confirmation as (if)it happens.

just curious can he even speak perfect English, because in every movie he has an accent.

I don't know but I think the accent adds to his character.

lame, from the 3 choices he was the worst one.

@charbelelnasr With English is his second language, naturally he'll have an accent. Like in real life, if your first language isn't English, it's very hard to get rid of the accent. (unless you were raised young or born in an English speaking country)

But like what Dynamo said, his Spanish accent can only add to his character.

Good find Ror. he's more than great for the part.

Also, Javier has been a powerhouse in past films (English and Spanish); he was great in Biutiful, Before Night Falls, Collateral, and of course, NO Country for Old Men. He has the gravitas the natural charisma to carry a movie.

This is cool, but I wish he was Bane. Nothing against Hardy.

Booooo this sucks! Roland is supposed to be a reflection of the American cowboy ie Clint Eastwood, not some dude with a Spanish accent. I love this book series, but if Javier Bardem gets the part, I'll have already given up on the adaptation.

@DannyRand

This is the rare situation where the artist (in this case Stephen King) divulges to his readers exactlyt what his character is supposed to be and his inspiration behind that character. King has gone on record plenty of times saying that Clint Eastwood in his Leoni films was his direct inspiration for Roland Deschain, not some conquistador.

"Roland is supposed to be a reflection of the American cowboy ie Clint Eastwood"

That American Cowboy, who I'm a big fan of, was actually created by Sergio Leone, an Italian. I think he probably had an accent too.

@PunkRock and charbeleinsar…

boo frickin hoo that neither Batman or Aragorn will t be leading the tet to the Tower. I for one am ecstatic if this is indeed true! Roland Deschain is not a pretty boy FOREIGNER (to combat your point earlier char) and for f*ck sake, Viggo already had this role, only he had a sword and no guns.

Bardem has the mysterious demeanor that I always envisioned in Roland.

2 things that worry me somewhat about Bardem though; he’ll need to slim down a little bit and wear blue contacts (biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig deal guys, I know. Don’t shart yourselves!!!).

IF you’re a true fan of the series you absolutely can’t give up on it over this.

Viggo Mortenson looks likely to sign on for Snow White and the Hunstman opposite Charlize Theron, Variety reports.

That hardly matters, Leone wasn't on screen. Roland should NOT have a Spanish accent, let's face it.

@SHHH
he can still do dark tower,because Snow White and the Hunstman starts filming in July 2011 for a Christmas 2012 release and dark tower comes out in May 2013, meaning they will film dark tower in 2012 and filming of Snow White and the Hunstman will be finished in 2011.

Of the three up for the role, Bardem is the only one who has won an Oscar. He's also an ACTOR, they have accents or they don't depending on the role. He doesn't have much of one in No Country for Old Men. He has learned different accents before and I'm sure he'll lose it if that's what Howard wants. Who would you have chosen?

Awesome. Out of all them Bardem is the best actor hands down. I thought it would go to Viggo. To me, he just seemed perfect for the role. But Bardem can do no wrong so far. I think he'll make the role his own. Thank God no Bale.

No. Hope he declines it. Only reason he got offered the part before Viggo is because he was nominated for an oscar. He doesn't look like Roland, doesn't sound like Roland. Nothing wrong with a spanish accent but it doesn't fit the character (and i'm saying this cause i'm portuguese, quarter spanish and have an accent myself, so i'm not being racist or whatever). Roland is a cowboy but also from the line of Eld which mirrors the arthurian legends somewhat. I could probably accept a british accent but american would fit the character in terms of the way i envisioned him (even the coloquialisms like "sai", "thankee" sound like something derived from english in terms of etimology and would sound terrible with a latin accent). He's a good actor but don't think he's right for the part. And some things are lost in translation tbh. Take for example Penelope Cruz. Great actress but really doesn't cut it in english compared to her work in spanish. In "Vanilla Sky" she was terrible. In the original called "Abre los ojos" ( which is a much superior movie to the Vanilla Sky disaster) the woman is a goddess. Same with basically anything she starred in under the direction of Almodovar.

Think the same is true in regards to Bardem. Respect for his work but not the right role for him.

Ok first off Bardem, can act without an accent, any actor worth his salt can and im sure he will work with a language coach to clean it up more so, look at all the british actors and actresses that have heavey accents, that can act with out the accents, THEY ARE ACTORS THATS WHAT THEY DO. So relax,would have i liked Viggo, sure i think he would have been perfect for the part , but he isnt it so we move on.

He's F@cking perfect. Gritty, tough, a bit scary, just like Roland should be. Give him some blue contacts, cha-ching. Viggo's too pretty, and Christian Bale is too Christian Bale.
In hindsight, Lance Henrickson would've been perfect ten years ago.
In foresight, go Javier!! Remember the face of your father!! Ka is a wheel!

King wrote roland with Clint Eastwood in mind i.e. his movements, talking, actions. Javier Bardem doesnt strike me as a Eastwood Cowboy. Eastwood would have been perfect for the role 30years ago. I was hoping for Viggo he is more an all around fit for the character. Dont get me wrong Javier is an amazing actor and I love his work. I have to agree he just isnt right for this particular role. If he accepts. I truely hope he does his homework and does this justice. This is Kings life long work and imo his best writing. I love The Dark Tower series. Also Javier wont have to sign on for the TV series because they will more than likely go to a young young actor because it will be when Roland was a teenager learning to become a gunslinger. They will write out a 3 movie picture contract for all actors to complete this trilogy.

@ locolobo - tell that to penelope cruz, rodrigo santoro, johny depp (from hell), gerard depardieu and many more. Besides, getting a british actor to speak with an american accent is no big deal... It's the same root language with slightly different pronounciation. There would be little problem with a spanish actor portraying for example an argentinian or mexican character, or a portuguese doing brazillian accent. The problem with spanish is that in spain everything is dubbed, no subtitles whatsoever. That means little to no exposition to other languages which in turn is a handicap for their acting. Which is a shame as both him and Penelope are 2 of the greatest actors of this generation but it will be noticeqble and impAir their acting.

On top of that he looks nothing like the descriptions of Roland in the books. 15 years ago I would've said Eastwood in Unforgiven. Now I say Viggo. Just check Hidalgo. Completely different story but the characters have similarities... They both go through hell to get to their prize and the internal conflict of dealing with his inner demons and past mistakes is conveyed with passion.

Nuff said.

I thought Viggo was a great choice. Then (just last week) I watched No Country For Old Men, and I realised that Javier Bardem was a far better fit for Roland. He's tall enough (unlike Viggo), he's untainted by baggage (unlike 'Aragorn' Viggo), he's got a deep/authorative voice (unlike Viggo), he sort of resembles Stephen King (unlike Viggo), he's not a pretty boy (unlike Viggo, who is one), he's scary, intimidating and imposing (unlike Viggo). Overall, Javier is just a better choice. I hope he accepts the offer.

Now get Naomie Harris as Susannah, Jared Leto as Eddie, and, most importantly of all, Nathan Gamble as Jake – no one on the planet is a better choice for the role than him. He's a genuinely talented and thoroughly likeable child actor who is the correct age for the part and looks exactly how Jake is described.

Now, Ron Howard's a capable director, and he can definitely handle The Gunslinger film and The Drawing of the Three miniseries. Hopefully he'll get Hans Zimmer to score them, too. But the later books need true visionaries to bring them to life. Get GUILLERMO DEL TORO for THE WASTE LANDS film, FRANK DARABONT for the WIZARD AND GLASS television series (and its comic-book-based continuations), and DARREN ARONOFSKY for THE DARK TOWER VII. Del Toro is a genius of set and creature design – he'd make us a fantastic City of Lud and Blaine the Mono, and probably get Ron Perlman as the Tick-Tock Man! He's also great with themes of childhood and loss of innocence, so Jake's journey would be a perfect fit for him. Darabont is hands-down the best Stephen King adapter ever – his films (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, The Mist) are all far superior to the King novels they're based on, and I'd love to see what he can do with The Dark Tower. He's already broken into the television industry with The Walking Dead – get him to supervise and executive-produce the entire 'young Roland' TV series, and maybe even write and direct a few episodes here and there himself. Make sure to incorporate all the comic-book sequels, all the way up to The Battle of Jericho Hill. Darren Aronofsky is great with violent, surreal, dark, drug-filled, sexy, scary films, and he's already made a fantastic film about a cosmic quest spanning millennia. He would be an amazing fit, plus he'd probably get Clint Mansell (who composed 'Lux Aeterna', one of the most famous pieces of music ever) to score the film.

And THAT is how you turn The Dark Tower into one of the best screen franchises of all time.
