Sebastian Stan Says There Will Be More On The Winter Soldier's Backstory In CIVIL WAR

While promoting The Martian, Sebastian Stan talks Captain America: Civil War and notes that more will be revealed about how Bucky became the Winter Soldier, as well as Bucky's perspective on Hydra and how he'll be a problem for other characters in the film.

With the release of the first teaser for Captain America: Civil War last week, it is clear that Bucky Barnes will be a central figure in the next Marvel film. In a new interview, Sebastian Stan indicates audiences will learn more about how Bucky became the Winter Solider. "What happened before the movie Winter Soldier, there will be a lot of things sort of made more clear in Civil War about what happened with him."

The Winter Soldier's relationship with Hydra may also be complicated in Civil War. "Hydra, in a sense, is responsible for him still being alive," Stan says. Bucky may always have a certain relationship with Hydra because "in a way, they're like his second family."

He also notes that Bucky has learned more about his past since the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and that information comes with "a huge price" in Civil War. "It's not easy for him to learn about what he's done." Stan adds that Bucky will be a "problem for a lot of people" in Civil War.

Bucky as Wolverine... I totally see that actually.

Hahaha @dethpillow

If anything, I think the closest thing to an MCU Wolverine would be Rocket Racoon.

He could easily have been nothing more than the Guardians' cartoonish "resident hothead", if not for Gunn's love for the character and his intense devotion to making him complex and great.

Complexity + badassery = Wolvie in a nutshell.

Haha, totally Wolverine. Weapon X vs Hydra, ha.... But, I feel like Hydra is even more manipulative than Weapon X, in a lot of ways, and Bucky may actually be a better person naturally than Logan is....

I like that they will be exploring Bucky's past from multiple angles....

I love when comics do that

It's also true, without Hydra, Bucky would be dead.... I like thinking about that stuff, it might not mean much in the long run, but it can definitely mean a lot to Bucky and his mindset, and what he is capable of....

Wolverine was enhanced in a lot of ways, and tortured, Weapon X is ruthless.... We still need to see Weapon X really explored on screen, it's so much better in the comics

But, Bucky was saved by Hydra, in a sense, haha, that's a cool angle.... I wonder if Zemo will play into that too

Crazy stuff, definitely excited to see how it plays out on screen

And, really excited to see what Cap has to say to Bucky about Hydra

I would love that.... and bring back Von Strucker too, I understand why they did what they did, because of time constraints, etc, but I would have loved to see them focus on the WWII stuff more

I also really want to see Red Skull in modern times.... especially now, it would be such a cool feeling to have Red Skull make his return and show everyone who's boss, they could make him so cool in modern times

A part of me would love to see The MCU start over completely after Infinity Wars, but I don't think that will happen, because there are so many movies that will have direct sequels, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Inhumans, etc....

But, eventually I would love to see a full on reboot, where they focus on stuff like that, Strucker, Red Skull, Mandarin, etc, a lot of characters that they didn't explore on screen in phase 1 and 2

I'd love to see those "dream" sequences too, of Cap fighting his way out of a "coma", when everyone thinks that he's dead, I'd love to see that stuff on screen

Can't wait for Doctor Strange, because I think that'll be our first glimpse at that stuff

Something tells me Zemo has something to do with Bucky's past.

In the comics, Baron Zemo outed Bucky as The Winter Soldier to the public. He could be the catalyst for Stark discovering Bucky killed Tony's parents. If Bucky’s crimes are exposed to the public, this could also be one of the catalysts for the divided between Tony and Steve, as it was shown in Captain America: The Winter Soldier that Bucky killed Stark’s parents. The public doesn't really know that Bucky is the Winter Soldier...do they??

Sounds like Bucky is on a path of redemption and vengeance. What if he's hunting those who manipulated him over the years?? Maybe Zemo is one of those people; or the Zemo family as a whole. Bruhl's Helmut Zemo may be the son of Heinrich. Heinrich could've manipulated Bucky or been allowed to use his talents for his own machinations back on the day. Then his son, Helmut, continued to do so.

Maybe Bucky regards Zemo as "the only person he feared over the last 60 years." I read a reddit post that (person claimed to be a PA) said Bruhl's Zemo is calculating and has a quiet terror within him.

That's what I'm hoping for too, and I'm hoping that Doctor Strange opens up the MCU in a sense, and makes some of those things a possibility.... They've touched on it before, briefly, in Avengers when Cap was still getting used to being defrosted, ha, but there is so much potential for a Cap horror/supernatural story like your saying, and Red Skull would fit perfectly in that arc
