Theater Association Boss Says Exhibitors "Will Not Forget" Universal Releasing TROLLS WORLD TOUR On Digital

Universal Pictures is the only studio sending one of their theatrical releases straight to Digital, and it sounds like cinema exhibitors will neither forgive nor forget the studio's controversial decision.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, John Fithian, the boss of the National Association of Theater Owners, has named and shamed Universal Pictures for their decision to release Trolls World Tour on Digital platforms. That movie took No Time to Die's release date back when COVID-19 seemed like no big deal, but things quickly changed in the days that followed.

As a result, the studio said the animated sequel would receive a same day release in theaters and on Digital platforms. Shortly after that, however, theaters were forced to close down.

Regardless, Fithian isn't happy and has accused Universal of "lying to consumers" about how the film is being released. "[All] of the movies with originally planned release dates in April and May, with the one exception of Trolls, will be released later theatrically, with full theatrical windows. All those other studios demonstrated their belief that the theatrical model is still essential to their business, they just had to delay release dates because of the virus."

"Only Universal, and only on Trolls, did one studio skip the theatrical model and go straight to the home," he added. "Universal continues to advertise to consumers that Trolls will be released simultaneously to theaters and the home on April 10. And they are lying to consumers."

"Universal knows that theaters will still be closed on April 10, so unlike every other distributor who must simply delay their releases in that time period, but still understand that theatrical release is essential to their business model, Universal on Trolls didn’t make that decision." Fithian then somewhat ominously added, "Exhibitors will not forget this."

With a star-studded cast which includes Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, James Corden, Kelly Clarkson, and Kenan Thompson, Trolls World Tour is certainly a movie which would have brought families into theaters. What exhibitors will do to get back at Universal remains to be seen, but DIgital releases like these could become the norm over the coming months.

Most of the money this movie makes is based on toys and merch sales anyway, so I understand why universal chose to put on streaming. Universal is too big to be threatened by theater owners. What do you all think?

@JustALurker - "Most of the money this movie makes is based on toys and merch sales anyway,"

Except for dvd's not true. The companies that make the movies almost never make the merch. Most of the profits & RISK go the manufacturer, wholesaler, and retailer. Net to movie maker is much less than you think unless you make it yourself or pay someone to make it for you.

Most merch are license deals where the manufacturer pays the IP holder a royalty per item sold. The IP holder pays the manufacturer nothing to get the products made and takes no risk if the do not sell. Change that equation and the percentages change,

@Polaris - An empty threat, do you really think the exhibitors are going to refuse to show Fast 9 and Jurassic World 3?

@soberchimera - it’s not that they’ll refuse to show it, it’s that they can limit how many people go to see it.

@Se4M4NSt4ine - hurting themselves in the process. Is it [frick]ed up what universal did? Kinda but theaters doing what you said is cutting off your nose to spite your face

@ShimmyShimmyYA - Theatres won’t lose money to the extent of Universal, they get financially set from Universal when Universal pay them to distribute the film.

@Se4M4NSt4ine - they get a cut of box office sales that’s how they make money you cut the box office you cut your own money, even if it’s the model you say where I pay them for distribution you cut my theaters down I’m cutting your fee down it’s a no win for theaters

@ShimmyShimmyYA - They won’t hurt themselves in the process, but studios do compete for screens, including lengthy IMAX screen runs, in order to maximize profits while theaters most make their money off of bodies through the door and concessions.

So no, Universal isn’t going to be hurting on opening weekend for a Fast and Furious film, but with smaller films and later weeks for their monster franchises they may find themselves losing those IMAX screens quickly in favor of the next big release or simply Theaters not taking as much of a chance on their middling productions and Oscar bait. (They could certainly have afforded to pass on screening “Welcome to Marwen”, or have ditched “Cats” even faster.)
