Hughes Bros To Direct Live Action Akira Movie?

Hughes Bros To Direct Live Action Akira Movie?

Apparently the pair behind The Book Of Eli and From Hell are in negotiations to bring the Manga/Anime to life on the big screen...

The brothers are reportedly finalizing a deal to direct the long-discussed live-action adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo’s manga Akira. Originally rumored in 2008 to be a two-part film directed by Ruairi Robinson, the films were put off by the WGA strike, then the scripts took forever to crack and the project was reported dead. In September of last year the Akira remake was said to be alive and well, and that brings us to this point.

This from Vulture:

"Vulture has learned that Warner Bros. is negotiating to reteam with The Book of Eli's Hughes brothers to have them direct a live-action remake of the cult favorite Akira, from a script by Iron Man scribes Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby. (Akira is being produced by Leonardo DiCaprio's company, Appian Way, along with Andrew Lazar, who’s also currently producing an adaptation of DC Comics’ Jonah Hex for Warners.)"

They also say that Warners won’t proceed with a single, live-action remake of the film, which trimmed away the last half of the 2,182-page story in order to weigh in at just over two hours. Instead, they reckon the studio is planning to keep the original 2 movie idea, with the first three volumes of the six-volume manga making up the first film, due out next year. All we know so far about the plans for the remake is that its shifting the action from Neo-Tokyo to New Manhattan and will most likely feature a Western cast too.

Personally I'm not sure these boys are the best directors for this one. Eli was an extreme bore by the end, and felt like I was sitting through a sermon disguised as an action/sci fi flick. They do have a good eye though. I they get this gig I really hope they do Otomo's story justice. The shift in location and Americanization of the story is something I can live with, as long as they are true to the characters and somehow pay homage to Akira's Japanese roots.

Check out Dead Presidents, I think its their best movie. They do have great eye, but maybe someone else should write the script.

From Hell really let me down and i've never been a fan of denzel's "action" films. He's better at drama. Man on Fire was pretty decent but that's where i draw the line really. As for these two directors... i guess they could get worse choices. McTeigue would have been a great one though.

He was rumored to be playing Kaneda at one point, but that fell through. His production company is still on board with this latest incarnation though.

I haven't seen Akira in years but I'd be up for a gander at this. I appreciated the style of Eli so it'd be interesting to see what they could do.

Shaman@ Denzel's best flicks are dramas but don't forget Virtuosity, that movie was pretty frickin cool. Also, while DiCaprio has been attached to the movie all along I do remember him debunking any rumors he was interested in playing Kaneda, he simply wanted to make the movie through his company, Ninja Scrolls too if I'm not mistaken. And for my 2 cents on the Hughes bros... I'll hope for the best and prepare for the worst. It's a tough piece to transition period, let alone for guys who haven't proven their directing chops yet. Give it to John Woo... lots and lots of white doves flying in slow motion.

Charlie Hunnam for Kaneda and Joseph Gordon-Levitt for tetsuo! Just the proposition. :)
Hunnam is a pretty good actor and can pull of punk roles. Likewise Gordon-Levitt! Both are f*cking great!

@Ror Eli was a snooze fest for sure, that whole chasing Eli down was pretty weak. I think Leo can work, despite he hating on him he is more than capable actor.

@MRJosh I think Denzel and Crowe said that Virtuosity was one of their worst film ever LOL I haven't seen it yet thought, but it does sound pretty cool.

As long as they don't have Keanu Reeves playing Kaneda, it's all good

Amen to that.

I'm not sure this news really changes this from the "will never get made" status.

I'm super-ultra-uber picky about Anime and Manga. Akira is still hands down the best Anime I have seen. That said the movie is basically BS compared to the Manga. Just really a fantastic comicbook. Live action Akira over 2 movies could be cool, but set outside of Japan and with western actors sounds like poo. I mean why bother to even call it Akira. Why not change the title to Steve or something.

Man, I don't know about this. I'm a huge fan of Akira but I just don't think it should be turned into a live movie.

Plus Eli IMHO was little more than Mad Max-with-a-bible. I was bored most of the movie and laughed when they tried to make Jackie look hard at the end.

Will flop.

The original anime was just to ground breaking and involved to much.

Just like "Wanted". No way could translate to the big screen.

@Dana- I agree with you. I loved Akira, so if it were to be made into a live feature film, I would have picked someone with either a little more experience... or somebody that really knows and loves the original material.

SHOULD WE ALLOW THE WATCHOWSKI BROS A CHANCE TO REDEEM THEMSELVES INSTEAD? WHAT ABOUT ANG LEE? I KNOW RIDLEY SCOTT TONY SCOTT OR DAVID FINCHER ARE THE IDEALS BUT THEY'LL PROBABLY PASS ON IT

@Skunkape-I have to agree with you on that, but I like the idea of sticking more tightly to the manga as well and spreading the story across 2 films. If they did that then it could be a very different beast compared to the original anime.

I really don't understand why they feel the need to relocate it...why can't it just be set in Japan?

I'm...I'm sorry...Akira without Neo Tokyo and without some asian actors is an awful, AWFUL idea....Oh man, somebody slap these people, please.

This is interesting and would be cool to see as a live action flick especially since we have the special effects nowadays too make it look real. But hopefully they can capture everything that the Akira anime encompassed because it is very epic and powerful visually.
