Lots of words have been thrown around regarding the box office of Alita: Battle Angel. While some outlets are spinning the female-led anime adaptation's performance negatively, others are considering the last few weeks as a definitive success for the potential franchise. The truth is, the film is neither - but on the bright side, it is at least on pace to overlap a Star Wars movie (Solo).
On the domestic front, Alita: Battle Angel has grossed $72 million to date, with $7 million from its third weekend. It's safe to say that the ~40% drop this weekend compensates for its steep drop from the weekend before, but even then, the film is not projected to reach the $100 million mark. Unless Captain Marvel somehow doesn't cut into the film's business, and holds continue to stay strong, don't expect $100 million as a realistic outcome.
On the other hand, Alita, as expected, is performing well overseas, with $40 million for the weekend. But like its results on the domestic front, this is nothing outstanding for the cyborg, who has a long way to go before reaching the range of profitability. While the break even mark has been reported to be anywhere in the range of $450-$550 million, the biggest factor going forward is its life after the box office, specifically her performance on home video. The film is currently on track to finish at around $430 million worldwide.
As for the rest of its theatrical run, word of mouth is key. So if you support Alita, go out and preach the good news.
