GHOST IN THE SHELL Producer Calls Film 'International Story' And Weighes In On Controversy

The american-ized adaptation of Ghost In The Shell sure has caused controversy, from white washing and racism. But will be the film be any good? How many things will it change from the source?

Many view next year's adaptation of Ghost In The Shell a 'white-washing mess' which is because of a non-asian woman playing an inherently asian character. The actress portraying Major Kusanagi is none other than Marvel's very own Scarlett Johansson and fans sure are not happy.

Controversy arose with the casting alone, but when the first image was released, things went even further. The studio even going as far to make Scarlett appear Asian in the film, or the very least just a little bit more like her character's race. Thing is, that failed. But will the film just be a mess? There is a 50/50 chance here, but the film's producer weighed in on controversy and says that fans will be happy with this adaptation. While addressing the controversy, Paul also added.

There are all sorts of people and nationalities in the world of Ghost In The Shell. We're utilizing people from all over the world....There's japanese in it. There's chinese in it. There's english in it. There's americans it.

It's evident that the film is trying to appeal to the masses of movie-goers, not just a minority or just a very big part of them, but they are keen on getting the interest of a regular movie-goer who doesn't know anything about the source. Plus, Johansson is a major draw.

Will Paul's words apply to the actual film? Well, it remains to be seen. Meanwhile, what do you think? Will this film fail or succeed and honor the source while appealing to the masses? Or just a full-on disaster like many anime-to-film adaptations?.

Ghost In The Shell premieres March 31, 2017

@Odin - no you are supporting art. Whitewashing is unfortunately necessary these days but I do believe it is slowly being phased out give it time. I am going to see if just so more Manga/Anime movies get made for a wider audience to enjoy.

Castle in the sky, Nausicca Valley of the wind, full Metal alchemist and more would be so great today with the CGI that is available

Yeah, but they don't have a Japanese person as the one person that matters in the story.

I try not to get upset about whitewashing, because it's such a touchy subject. But as much as I love ScarJo, she is just wrong for the role of the Major. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

I'm probably gonna see the movie though (online, I ain't paying shit)

Ask real Japanese robot designers what they want their robots to look like.

The answer is: Scarlett Johansson.

The actress from Pacific Rim was born for the role so yes there was an actress for this movie

Or the woman from Sense 8 so don't give me that bs either of these women could have been the breakout and would have been a huge win for international and ethnic actors. Scarlet was use for star power, I would've gone for another actress but this is just my opinion

I hope that this movie doesn't suck. I would love the next big craze to be Anime based live action films. Castle in the Sky would be such a great film. Huge spectacle movie that would look beautiful.
