Many view next year's adaptation of Ghost In The Shell a 'white-washing mess' which is because of a non-asian woman playing an inherently asian character. The actress portraying Major Kusanagi is none other than Marvel's very own Scarlett Johansson and fans sure are not happy.
Controversy arose with the casting alone, but when the first image was released, things went even further. The studio even going as far to make Scarlett appear Asian in the film, or the very least just a little bit more like her character's race. Thing is, that failed. But will the film just be a mess? There is a 50/50 chance here, but the film's producer weighed in on controversy and says that fans will be happy with this adaptation. While addressing the controversy, Paul also added.
There are all sorts of people and nationalities in the world of Ghost In The Shell. We're utilizing people from all over the world....There's japanese in it. There's chinese in it. There's english in it. There's americans it.
It's evident that the film is trying to appeal to the masses of movie-goers, not just a minority or just a very big part of them, but they are keen on getting the interest of a regular movie-goer who doesn't know anything about the source. Plus, Johansson is a major draw.
Will Paul's words apply to the actual film? Well, it remains to be seen. Meanwhile, what do you think? Will this film fail or succeed and honor the source while appealing to the masses? Or just a full-on disaster like many anime-to-film adaptations?.
