GUNDAM Live-Action Feature In The Works From Legendary Pictures And Sunrise

Fans have been hoping to see a live-action take on the popular Gundam anime series for many years, & it's just been announced at Anime Expo that a feature adaptation is in the works at Legendary Pictures.

Legendary already has the Pacific Rim movies, but it seems the studio fancies taking a crack at the classic Mecha anime series that directly inspired those giant robot/monster mashes.

It was announced today at Anime Expo 2018 that Legendary will partner with Sunrise to produce a live-action adaptation of Gundam, which is generally credited with popularizing the giant robot genre all the way back in 1979.

There doesn't appear to be any other details on the project at this time, but for those unfamiliar with this property, the official press release contains a handy synopsis which you can check out below.

The original Gundam series is set in the Universal Century, an era in which humanity's growing population has led people to emigrate to space colonies. Eventually, the people living in the colonies seek their autonomy, and launch a war of independence against the people living on Earth. Through the tragedies and discord arising from this human conflict, not only the maturation of the main character, but also the intentions of enemies and the surrounding people are sensitively depicted. The battles in the story, in which the characters pilot robots known as mobile suits, are wildly popular.

@Nebula - I thought it was great. It really had a decent reason for the refrences (watch vr chat to see how people use avatars).

My only problem was the villain was a bit cliche, i liked it better when he was really was trying to bargain with breakfest club highschools. He should have been the guy the maker ripped off. Wasted oppurtunity.

Much better than the book in anycase. I am afraid it will not get a sequel though.

@Nebula - Oh and the villain was obviously a uber stan smith

@Nebula - I haven't seen it, but I read the book awhile back. It wasn't that well written, and the only reason I stuck through it was because I"m a child of the 80's and dug the reference...and even that got tedious after awhile.

@EbonyMaw - I didn't really have any problems per se, it was just super quick and a bit gatekeeper-ish. Watched it at home with my dad, after the first 5 minutes and a barrage of references she didn't get my sister just gave up on it.

I agree with everything in this video, it lists some issues..

@Pathogen - It does not really follow the book to be fair.

@Nebula - I do agree that convo should have gone differently

Serento: I will turn the schools in the schools from ferris bueller and the breakfest club

Wade: Really what's the name of the schools

Serentio: I don't [frick]ing remember. What kinda question is that.

Still i enjoyed it. Good stuff overall.

@EbonyMaw - best scene in the whole film. hopefully they cast an asian lead, everyone else can be diverse. RP1's performance shows people can get attracted to "asian property" if done right. hopefully Waititi's AKIRA works too.

@MrNegative - which gundam is that from
Spidey91
Spidey91 - 7/6/2018, 6:39 PM
@zeon00 - that's from Gundam Build Fighters. it's a more kid-friendly spin-off than the usual Gundam series. in its world, like in ours, Gundam is a work of fiction and franchise, and people use the little plastic kits, Gunplas, to battle in "virtual" arenas that make their mobile suits come to life. it's called Gunpla Battle, and the main character wants to participate in the world tournament. there's also some minor fantastical elements thrown in.
it's every toy anime we had as kids, like YuGiOh, Zoids or Beyblade, but multiplied by 100. excellent animation, fantastic orchestal soundtrack, lighthearted and self-aware script and humor, character cameos from actual Gundam series. and the fights scenes are god-tier. that gif is just a sample of what the series does in terms of visuals. they're pretty brutal too, pieces of plastic and parts and limbs constantly fly off everywhere.

Really? Really?! REALLY?!

You know, I wanted to become a filmmaker so that one of my projects could be this. Guess they beat me to it.

But Sunrise/Legendary: you got my attention, now DON'T [frick] IT UP!

Never saw/read Gundam but aside from a couple of excellent exceptions (Akira, Cowboy Bebop) I was never really a bit anime fan.

@RorMachine - If we're doing suggestions... I've been really impressed with My Hero Academia.

A lot of the time, I find the Japanese take on superheroes grating, but this series is a pretty darn good shonen. Good dub, too.
