EDITORIAL: Five Reasons Why AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Might Not Be 2015's Best Comic Book Movie

There has been alot of talk about Avengers: Age of Ultron, and rightfully so. It is the sequel to one of the highest grossing films of all time. It is part of a film series that has proven itself to audiences and fans time and time again. With nearly the entire creative team returning, it's impossible to see how this won't be the best of 2015. I don't believe in the impossible.

5. The Director

Joss Wheaton is truly a gem.  He is fan favorite choice for anything, due to his quirky and clever writing. He isn't afraid to make things goofy, and for the most part he can make it work. With very little cinematic credit, most of the love for him comes from his work on television shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly. Even outside of TV, he is also an acclaimed comic writer which adds to his fan credit. Does this make him all that infallable though? Not in my eyes. People tend to ignore that his work can fall flat, his work on Dollhouse and the early days of Agents of Shield prove this. Will he fall apart here? Probably not, but appearantly leaving the Avengers property isn't a sign of extreme faith.

4. The Cast

Look all of these are golden, pure gold. If it aint broke, dont fix it. We love all of these guys in their roles, they all practically own them. The new additions could be just as great, Aaron Taylor-Johnson is repsinig his role as Kicksilver and Elizabeth Olsen is reprising her role as his wife from Godzilla. Meanwhile, Megatron has been recasted, with the Lizard King taking the role of Mega-Ultron. The Lizard King has proven himself as being a great comedic prescence, which should work great with Joss Wheaton's ability to turn every character into funny man. With any luck, Aaron Taylor Johnson will bring his classic blandness that brought Godzilla to life. In the end, it's better to just stick with what's safe rather to take chances and hire unknowns.

3. That Trailer Did It's Job

No one here can deny how cool the Age of Ultron trailer was. It shows us that the film will be taking a darker, more serious tone. It appears we will be getting an Empire Strikes Back level sequel this go around. Let's not forget, trailers mean nothing. They are designed to get us in the theater, and this one has done a damn good job at exactly that. Anothe trailer that did a good job at that was Iron Man 3. It looked dark and serious and it looked like it would really wrap up the Iron Man films and give us a threatening villain. Whether you like Iron Man 3 or not, you cannot deny the tone in the first trailer and the promise of a threatening villain ripped off the page were just fronts. The film was a goofy comedic mess with a dumb kid and villainw who didn't wear socks. While the film may not have dissapointed you, the trailer most certainly lied to you.

2. The Writer

I'm gonna go out there and say it, I dont like Joss Wheaton as a writer. He writes funny dialouge, but that's about it. Scenes in the Avengers that are supposed to carry weight, end up cringe-worthy at worst and entertaining at best. His stories are generic and his antagonists are laughable. He writes protagonists quite well, everyone is likeable and fits their role perfectly. Even going back to his TV work, I can't stand to watch Firefly or Buffy, both seem incredibly bland and only enjoyable on the first viewing. It might not be fair to judge a film after seeing it upwards of ten times, but once the jokes have worn off the Avengers isn't all that engaging. I will watch it and enjoy, but I find it hard to keep my attention on it.

1. Because This Article Is Totally Necessary

The Avengers is sure to dominate the box office, but that's it. People do already believe in it, but that means nothing. People believed Spiderman 3 couldn't fail, The Phantom Menace couldn't fail,  The Last Stand couldn't fail, the list could actually go on forever. Even without studio interference,  this film is not destined to be good. It also isn't taking risks, real ones anyway. The Super Hero subgenre can only stay alive with innovation and change, using the same formula over and over get's tiring, even if the product is consistantly good. It's important to recognize that films that shake the foundations and dare to create something we haven't seen before are just as valid and likely to succeed as the ones that don't have to prove themselves. Just because Avengers: Age of Ultron is familiar does not mean it is better.

Note: This whole article was made in jest, and most of it isn't to be taken seriously. I just wanted in on the fun.

Normally I would agree with this article that Avengers 2 may not be the best comic book movie of 2015 (I am not a big Joss Whedon fan and thought the first was highly over-rated), I have to disagree because the two other options are Ant-Man (which I don't have high expectations on following Edgar Wright's absence) and Fantastic Four (which I am very skeptical about). I will say that the trailer was awesome, though.

Oh, and my biggest hope for AoU is for some more screen time for Hawkeye, why get Jeremy Renner if youre not gonna use him?

The humor didn't land correctly as there was too little of it to be seen as a blatant parody.
gamecreatorjj
gamecreatorjj - 12/20/2014, 1:25 AM
@objectivelybiased isn't that the point? It wouldn't be funny if all the humor landed. If I had made it all blatant parody, then it's just simply parody, that makes too much sense. Truth be told, it's nonsense and I wasn't sure where I was going. Most of the stuff I write, I plan out and develop, but I wanted to get this on the editorial page near the other two, so I just cooked up an argument that's essentially "could be bad, could be good." Thanks for the critique though, I will keep that mind next time I even do a rush job.

I'm mad that you tricked me.
