One can easily argue that 2013's Comic-Con was the best Comic-Con in a really long time; Zack Snyder is going to give us the comic book duo we've all been waiting for, Gareth Edwards bring us our first real look from his movie about Walter White Vs. A giant mutant lizard dinosaur, and James Gunn's epic about a simple musician from Pawnee, Illinois becoming a lord of the stars and so much more.
Allow me to create a scene for you... You're a comic book fan, you just went through an hour or so of marvel stuff from Thor to Guardians and everything else. It's almost time to leave and you're ready to jet out of here so you can hook up with the chick dressed as an Ewok.
Suddenly, an untamed Joss Whedon appears.... he walks in... the whole crowd is hanging on his words... He's got something to say and you're ready to go, it's Joss Whedon so it's not like you're not going to listen and see what he's got. Obviously it has to be Avengers stuff, but what is it? It is nothing but a piece of fried gold, that's what it is.
Now let me tell you something; When I heard the next Avengers villain was Ultron i was extatic. The pure concept of it was genius. Then as the news came out continually- James Spader, Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor Johnson... all of it... Brilliant!
But soon enough i became less and less excited, I soon realized one thing was in question. Where will my sense of child-like awe be? Us comic book readers have been waiting for an Avengers movie since we were children, ten years almost for me and double that for some of you ancient geezers. When you see The Avengers on the big screen you get this sense of weird child-like wonder (Keep in mind when it comes to D.C. Vs. Marvel i'm neutral.)You think to yourself "If Marvel never does this again, if this is the only Avengers movie ever, it's ok because I still have this moment. In my minds eye The Avengers will always be here to protect us." Sure enough after I left the theater, went home, showered, tossed on my uniform for work I was still thinking how cool it was just to see childhood heroes alive.
With sequels to movie franchises already established along with new characters- That doesn't seem enough build up and hype to recreate a flame that was burning in me for 12 years. So if I'm so damned confused about Avengers 2, imagine how I feel about Part 3, and the Thanos situation is a whole new can of worms for another article.
This isn't me venting and acting like Skylar White here, this is a worried fan who doesn't want to see his favorite super-team lower themselves to the levels of Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen. We can only hope that Feige and Friends can avoid the typical trilogy rat-race: You're off and in the lead in the first lap and thing are looking good, second lap you're kind of falling behind but you can pick it up still, and third lap your horse trips and falls, breaks his neck and you're beating the damned thing with a billy club trying to bring it back. These are all legitimate concerns
But then again I'm just a simple man with simple tastes. Cold beer, good pizza, and a weird attraction to women who look like Linda Cardellini in Freaks and Geeks.
