AVENGERS: ENDGAME Co-Director Joe Russo Comments On Reports He And Anthony Are In Talks For MCU Return

We recently heard that the Russos are in talks to direct another Marvel Studios movie, but Joe declined to comment on that during a recent interview in which he also discussed Scarlett Johansson's lawsuit.

In the midst of Scarlett Johansson's legal battle with Disney over her Black Widow earnings from that controversial Disney+ "Premier Access" release, it was reported that the Russo Brothers' talks with Marvel Studios to helm another movie for them had stalled. This was reportedly a result of uncertainty surrounding how the feature would be distributed and how they'd be compensated.

Since then, Disney has made things right with the actress, and we're sure the studio wouldn't be foolish enough to pass up on bringing Joe and Anthony back after the success of Avengers: Endgame

During a recent interview with Variety, Joe Russo was asked about where things stand with those talks. Unfortunately, all he'd say was, "it would be inappropriate for us to comment on a deal if we were in the middle of it." That's fair enough, though we're pretty sure this movie is going to be Secret Wars

As for Johansson's battle with Disney, the filmmaker added: "I’m glad that the lawsuit’s resolved. I do think it was indicative of significant change that’s been happening. The resolution speaks volumes about the respect for artists moving forward in this changing landscape."

"There’s a lot of tension, just like there is in a lot of industries, because there’s a lot of disruption," Joe continued. "People’s nerves are fraying, and it’s hard to predict what’s going to happen or where anything is going. Corporations are panicking at the moment, because I think that half the studios are going to disappear in the next 5-10 years, and the game has changed dramatically."

"There are content producers who can outspend any studio, and it’s just a rounding error for them, because they’re $1 trillion companies. We’ve never seen that before in the business."

Digital and streaming releases don't appear to be the future of Hollywood blockbusters if the past couple of months are any indication, but the landscape is definitely changing. Whether we're talking about the future of smaller movies or the shortening of the theatrical window, there's simply no getting around the fact that COVID-19 has had a major, long-lasting impact on this business.

Are you excited for the Russo Brothers to make their MCU return?

I hope it's X-Men. Original 5 vs Trask and the Sentinels.

@TheManWithoutFear - Yeah, gotta be the OG 5.

The casuals may wonder where Wolervine is, but they'll forget about it if the movie/characters are good.

@manofillintent1 - Black Widow was decent, Shang Chi was nuts, Eternals and No Way Home look crazy and then we’ve got Sam Raimi, James Gunn and Taika Watuti coming up.

It’d be great if they did another, but we need them less than at any other point in the MCU’s history

@Havenless - phase four has been split down the middle for me, on one hand you had Wandavision, F+WS, black widow, but on the other hand we got sang chi, Loki and what if? Everything coming up looks promising, their potential return will always get me excited but I’ll live if they don’t, and so will the MCU

@Havenless -

100% this

If anything, I'd be interested in seeing the Russos rejoin to do a solo character's film if they are going to come back at all. I'd love to see new blood tackle the Avengers films

@TheWalkingCuban - Multiple Man is perfect to appear on Deadpool 3

on a Morlocks Show, Gambit would be a member of the Marauders. Later, he wants to redeem himself. Finally, Gambit joins the X-Men.

@GwenLantern - Also: Secret Wars (2015) > Secret Wars (1984)

Not hating the original series, it was just kinda cheesy (thanks to the age), but has a nice concept of a variety of villains/heroes fighting together.
I'm a big Hickman fan (love the current X-Men Krakoa idea), so the Thor Corps, death of Thanos and God Doom was a cool ride.

I know saying a trillion dollar company is a bit of a hyperbole, Amazon does way more than streaming, but Netflix is still very large at $225bn, and these valuations lead me to one question.

If these streaming services have such high valuations, why do their streaming movies all look so terrible?

A handful of them have been really great, but as a whole the quality is really lacking. Netflix is releasing one new movie a week as part of their current content strategy - how many of these have really been worth watching?

Definitely directors I'd trust to usher the X-Men into the MCU. With that being said, I wouldn't mind them doing a Dark Avengers project either.

It's hilarious that they even refer to the future of the movie industry, because they are - like every one else in Hollywood - clueless.

There is one issue - and only one - that is threatening the future of movies in theaters.

Ticket prices.

Until the fat cats making these movies - the directors, actors, etc. - acknowledge that and fix it, theaters are on a ticking clock and headed towards oblivion.

I honestly think that at this point, considering the Russos' production of Infinity War and, more importantly (BO -wise anyway), End Game, Marvel wouldn't bring them back in for anything less than a major epic like Secret Wars. Mainly because with IW/EG they proved that they cane handle it, and handle it well (which a lot of other directors can't do (giving the side-eye over in DC's direction)). With that in mind, for as much as I would love to see them take on some X-Projects, I really see it going to someone who is relatively new and unknown but who has proven themselves with just a couple of good films that show that they get the X-Men (kinda like Chloe Zhao).

And as far as the first X-Men movie goes, I have a couple of thoughts:

(1) They are definitely going to build up to it. Marvel is very good at planting the seeds for things to come later on (Infinity Saga anyone?). So expect to see the X-Characters introduced slowly before building up to the actual X-Men movie (or whatever they're going to call it by that point. Who knows, by that time societal norms may have come full circle where we're totally embracing the male machismo and they'll be called the "Ultimate X-MEN!"). Seriously, I fully expect characters like Xavier and Logan to show up somewhere before the actual X-Whatever movie.
(2) When they finally do an actual X-Men movie (with point (1) above in mind, remember that the more time/distance that they put between themselves and the FoX-Men the better) it will be the original 5 and Magneto won't be the main bad guy in the beginning. He might be around but I don't think that Marvel is going to go down that well-trodden road again for a while. Keep in mind, folks, that X-Men is Kevin Feige's passion project. He's been (probably literally) laying awake at nights for years in his X-Men Underoos, in his X-Men sheets staring at the X-Men poster on his ceiling (the Jim Lee X-Men #1 covers from 1991 (which I have a couple of ;)) I'm guessing) and planning out the absolute most awesome way to introduce our merry band of mutants. I have no doubt. We all just have to be patient. But I have a feeling that when we finally first see the X-Men "assemble" it will be like that moment in Avengers (which still to this day takes my breath away).

X-Men would be nice or Hickman's Secret Wars but I'm not getting my hopes up.
