AVENGERS: ENDGAME Star Chris Evans Reflects On Getting "Emotional" Seeing Audience's Reaction To Mjolnir Scene

Avengers: Endgame star Chris Evans looks back on being in the audience for the premiere of the film, and his "emotional" reaction to seeing the audience's response to Captain America lifting Mjolnir!

Avengers: Endgame is the perfect example of a film which is best enjoyed in a theater. The reaction to those big moments are unforgettable, and videos of fans responding wildly to everything from Captain America lifting Mjolnir to "Avengers Assemble!" went viral back in 2019.

In an interview with Empire (via The Direct), Steve Rogers actor Chris Evans revealed why he had an emotional reaction at the premiere to seeing the audience response to that iconic Mjolnir scene.

In that scene, Iron Man and Thor are on the ropes in their battle with Thanos. Just as it begins to look like the God of Thunder will meet his maker at the hands of the Mad Titan, Cap lifts the magic hammer and uses it to give the villain a well-deserved beating after proving that he's worthy.

"The first time I saw Endgame was at the premiere. Normally I see the films I work on well in advance, and I rarely sit through premieres (too much anxiety). But being the last installment of a ten-year journey, I wanted to experience this final film the same way the audience would," Evans recalls. "When Cap lifts Mjölnir, our theater went absolutely berserk."

"Even though I knew the moment was coming, I still got emotional. In the following weeks, friends and family would send me clips from theaters around the world losing their collective shit at this moment," he continued. "Seeing those reactions, and knowing that I was lucky enough to be a part of those memories for those people, made me feel a sense of pride and gratitude that I'll never be able to properly express. In those moments I'm not an actor, or even an adult; I'm a little kid again completely captivated by the power and magic that movies can wield. I'm getting choked up."

It was a special moment, and one likely to go down in the history books as one of the most awe-inspiring scenes ever put on film. That Evans had this reaction is honestly no great surprise.

Plus not only did he lift it, but he also FINALLY said Avengers Assemble

@TyrantBossMedia - Yeah, let's nitpick an iconic moment because y'know...thats fun. Also, ever heard of wireless communicators?

@TyrantBossMedia - Yeeeah, I don't think anyone but you got taken out of the scene but you bud.

But you do you.

@TyrantBossMedia - He kept the room quiet so we can react loudly.

@TyrantBossMedia - Well, let's say most anyone then. People talk about something they love and you comment why they shouldn't love said something.
Does that really make you feel happy? Let people enjoy things. Clearly most here enjoyed Endgame more than you did so don't expect an echo chamber.

@TyrantBossMedia - I always think about that too. Just like how at the beginning of Return of the King when Gandalf and co. are talking to Saruman when he’s standing on the top of Orthanc. They’re all talking like they’re right in front of each other and not separated by the height of a giant freaking building.

@TyrantBossMedia - I absolutely agree. Almost perfect movie, waiting years for this moment and he whispers it?
I hoped someone would make a spoof where he says it and the camera pans to everyone looking at each other like “what he say?” Lol.
I don’t know if it’s because Chris doesn’t have a strong yell or what but lifting the hammer and yelling assemble would have nailed it.
I wouldn’t normally even say anything but IMAX first showing and that part actually took me out of it.
Uhhhh
Uhhhh - 1/19/2021, 6:40 AM
@TyrantBossMedia - Most, if not all, heard Cap yell "Avengers..." Those directly around Cap heard "Assemble." Thor was right next to him, heard "Assemble," and screamed right as he said it. That's what everyone else heard - Thor's scream - and that's what prompted everyone else to scream, and then the army charged the battlefield. I've heard people complain a lot about "Assemble" being so quiet that no one could have heard it. But if you just watch the film, you can see what happens.

@Uhhhh - Let me rephrase that last sentence, and say "if you watch closely." Not trying to dig at anyone.

@TyrantBossMedia - it might also be because that’s how it always done. It’s a war cry. I mean in comics cartoon posters they all yell “assemble!!” Its their thing. That’s why it’s a thing.
I got over it quickly but I couldn’t help think “that’s it?” Oh well

@TyrantBossMedia - Yes, it's literally the first thing they show when the people are coming through the portals. Falcon says "On your left" through the wireless communicators.

There’s few people that are destined the play the same role for years, and I’m telling you Mr Evans, you’re one of them.

RDJ is and always will be Iron Man, but he was set up in a brilliant first solo film, and the forefront of building the MCU.

Cap, was an underdog, played by an actor coming off another failed CBM franchise, with a mediocre first putting, crappy costume in his big team up event, saved by another underdog duo in the form of the Russo brothers, won the popularity of the fans - slowly and respectively, outnumbers the Iron Man success, convinced modern audiences to back him in Civil War, becomes the face of the MCU, but most importantly the heart, the ideals. He became the forefront of the MCU, the leader the fans wanted, the character the supporting cast worked off of, he went toe to toe with the big bad, using Thor’s hammer.

Chris Evans as Cap transcends Christopher Reeve as Superman, transcends RDJ as Iron Man, and transcends Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.

He knows this, we know this. I’m sorry Mackie and Larson, but there’s only one Cap, and he earned it.

@Se4M4NSt4ine -

"Chris Evans as Cap transcends Christopher Reeve as Superman, transcends RDJ as Iron Man, and transcends Hugh Jackman as Wolverine."

he is great but would not say he is better than them.

@dracula - I never said he was better than them, don’t miss quote that, I’m saying Chris Evans as Captain America is definitely more successful, definitely more prestigious, and definitely more impactful.

@TyrantBossMedia - well your own statement contradicts itself. In 40 years time, people will remember Evans for Captain America.

You’re lucky if half the modern non comic book movie going audiences unfortunately remember Reeves at all. Sure, they’d recognise him as Superman in a picture, but only in costume.

My girlfriend, her friends, my coworkers, have hardly any idea of who Reeves is. Just like in 40 years time, people will hardly remember who Evans was, except us, and the people around at the time, but everyone else will just remember the character.

And the character has truly transcended above all his other counter comic book live action characters. You can argue with me, but statistics speak facts, Captain America going forward is at the forefront of the highest grossing movie of all time.

@TyrantBossMedia - don’t patronise me because you feel offended.

I’ve been to warzones, fought for my country, seen and done things you couldn’t even begin to understand.

Don’t talk to me about living, like an “old person” you consider history to be based upon your own experiences. Negligence at its best.

@Se4M4NSt4ine - I love Chris Evans and Cap but to me, RDJ as Iron Man and Chris Reeve's Superman are still more iconic.

@SnideCut - that’s totally understandable, I like that approach because it’s your opinion, and you’re not cancelling my opinion either.

After all opinions are subjective!

@Se4M4NSt4ine - Thing is, for me, its hard to even rank them honestly. I put them all on the same level haha
