When Tony Stark returned to Earth in Avengers: Endgame, it was clear that he hadn't forgiven Steve Rogers for what happened in Captain America: Civil War. However, when the hero later decided to help his fellow Avengers travel through time, Iron Man and Cap finally seemed to settle their differences.

Recently, the Russo Brothers held a live commentary for the Marvel Studios movie and welcomed Robert Downey Jr. as a special guest. During his appearance, this scene featuring an apparent burying of the hatchet was playing, and the actor shared his thoughts on what he made of this exchange.

"It was all about him forgiving me for not forgiving him so we can start getting ready to who knows, you know maybe throw in the towel for whatever we gotta do," Downey says. "It wasn’t just the idea of burying the hatchet, it was burying the hatchet and taking up the cross together. It was a complex scene."

Ultimately, Steve and Tony would reconnect while travelling through time, and while Iron Man sacrificed himself to save the universe, Captain America got the happy ending he was robbed of after crashing into the ice during World War II. Both endings felt fitting for the characters, and were equally surprising.

What do you guys think about Downey's take on this reunion during the events of Avengers: Endgame?

I loved Steve and Tony's reunion on Endgame.

No cliche "I forgive you" or "Peace" moments. Just Tony handing him over the shield as they had bigger things to fight than focusing on their personal feud.

@kylo0607 - True, but he literally did say peace in this scene lol.

Russos did a great job of fitting what we like about these characters into this one movie. We saw Tony invent and show up in a nice car. Lots of thought went into wrapping this saga up. Well done.

@LaserKing - they're masterful at it
I was talking to a guy the other week who said that he disliked endgame because it was all fan service and no progression. Felt like he missed a few points along the way.

I notice the little touches that you just did. The things that keep these movies firmly in the universe but continue to push the narrative forward

@Vigor - You can tell they sat in a room and poured over every detail. This movie had massive expectations and it delivered.

What Tony said about resentment was so right. It was so BLUNT and ELEMENTARY but it’s like it needed to be said and the way he delivered it was right on the money.

Going from this

To this

Was something else.

@BlackBeltJones - Tony's choices and story arc it one of the most layer well thought out run for any hero i think we'll see for a very long time IMO.... whether you enjoyed it or not his decision made him a villain , anti-hero, and finally a symbol ..... I AM IRON MAN...

@knocturnalzen10 - you actually watch him become a better man which makes his ascension as a hero all the more rewarding.

He needed to become a better person first to become the hero that he is. How he lashed out at Cap reminded me of early Tony, someone who would let resentment fester; resentment for his father for example. But he realized he had to move on.

@BlackBeltJones - saddest part was his daughter gave him peace of mind.

Endgame switches from comedy to drama so frequently it's crazy. These guys have lived as these characters so long that they never feel forced when maintaining that balance which is so hard to do in these sorts of movies. Everything feels loose, natural and overall honest

I personally wish that there was a bit more to the scene. It was very good, but too much was left unsaid. I guess that was the idea though. Maybe they could have had Cap say a bit more.
