These Were The 20 Highest Viewed Stories On ComicBookMovie.com In 2018

It's been a crazy year. Avengers died, the X-Men are finally coming home, and new heroes stepped forward to take the spotlight from some fan-favourite classics. These were the stories YOU viewed most...

What a year it's been. Actors have left roles, Marvel Studios killed off half of our favourite characters, and it was finally confirmed that the X-Men and Fantastic Four are coming home to the MCU.

This year, you guys made your voices heard by checking out news stories, sharing them with your friends, and letting your thoughts be heard in the comments sections. So, after taking a look through the site's overall pageviews (which count return visits rather than the numbers under unique pageviews), I've rounded up the year's highest viewed stories on the site.

You can check those out below, and it's a list which makes for very interesting reading, especially as there are some very unexpected posts which made the cut.

Before we get to that though, I'd like to thank ALL of you guys, CBM's owner Nate Best, and editors like Mark Cassidy and Rohan Patel, not to mention the site's new additions and regular users (like VisionWitch and MattIsForReal) who it's been so much fun work with this year. However, everyone's contributions make this site special, so give yourselves a shout out below.

So, what are you waiting for? Click on the "View List" button below to see this year's biggest stories.

20. A Leaked Photo From Dark Phoenix

Despite the negativity surrounding Simon Kinberg's Dark Phoenix, a first look at the costumes back in March really grabbed the attention of fans, especially as they were faithful to Grant Morrison and Frank Quietly's acclaimed New X-Men run.

Since they've been officially unveiled, the response has been mixed but mostly positive and it's just a shame that we're now waiting for the movie to be released next June rather than this past November as planned. Will it be worth the delay? We'll see.

19. Jake Gyllenhaal Suits Up As Mysterio

We still haven't had a proper first look at Jake Gyllenhaal's Mysterio but this photo from the set of Spider-Man: Far From Home finally gave us a glimpse of the villain and it instantly became clear that he's using Chitauri technology to create his "illusions."

18. Quantum Realm Costumes

Before we even knew that Avengers 4 was called Avengers: Endgame, some toy packaging leaked online and revealed some fancy new white costumes for Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

While we don't know if these will actually be used in the movie, the prevailing theory is that they're suits which will allow them to travel safely into the Quantum Realm next year.

17. Michael B. Jordan As Superman?

Michael B. Jordan stole the show in Black Panther as the villainous Erik Killmonger but when reports surfaced that Henry Cavill has decided to walk away from the role of Superman, one of the names to emerge as being a possible contender to take his place was, you guessed it, Jordan!

It's an interesting choice and one which got fans talking an awful lot at the time.

16. Bill And Ted 3 Is Officially Happening

After years of rumours about another Bill and Ted movie, it was finally confirmed back in May that original creators Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon have written the script for a third chapter, while Dean Parisot has been confirmed to direct. Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, meanwhile, will reunite on screen.

15. A (Blurry) Look At Ronin

We cover a lot of leaked material throughout this list and, unsurprisingly, a first blurry look at Jeremy Renner suited up as Ronin in Avengers: Endgame grabbed the attention of fans.

There were also shots of Captain Marvel, Black Widow, and Captain America.

14. First Captain Marvel Stills Arrive

Captain Marvel took centre stage on the cover of Entertainment Weekly earlier this year and the magazine revealed a huge gallery of stills which offered a first look at the Skrulls, the young Nick Fury, and some great shots of Starforce and Carol Danvers in action.

13. Ruby Rose Suits Up As Batwoman

Ahead of this year's DC TV crossover ("Elseworlds"), Ruby Rose was cast as Kate Kane/Batwoman and it probably won't surprise you that a first look at the Orange is the New Black actress suited up as the hero made quite a splash when it leaked online (before being officially unveiled hours later).

She looks awesome in the suit and is now being lined up for her own spinoff series.

12. Captain America Loses His Beard

Captain America had a very different look in Avengers: Infinity War (thanks to his tatty costume and beard) but he'll be going back to his classic look in Avengers: Endgame and that was leaked online in a round of promo art which showed him rocking a clean-cut appearance and that classic chainmail.

11. Brie Larson Suits Up As Captain Marvel

As is so often the case, our first look at Brie Larson suited up as Captain Marvel came courtesy of some set photos that were taken in Los Angeles.

What blew people away, though, was the fact that Carol Danvers wasn't wearing her classic costume; instead, she had a version of that which was green in colour and while it was pretty obvious that this was just her Kree uniform (which has since been confirmed), that didn't stop a lot of fans from losing it over what appeared to be a totally new take on the hero.

10. Disney Fires James Gunn

After James Gunn's political comments drew the attention of those who don't agree with his beliefs, some old Tweets in which the filmmaker made some shocking and offensive jokes were brought to life and Disney had no other choice (?) than to fire him.

That means that he will no longer direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the fallout was huge with Dave Bautista asking to be released from his contract and the entire cast sharing an open letter supporting Gunn. Alas, it fell on deaf ears and the director will instead take charge of Suicide Squad 2

9. A Captain Marvel Easter Egg In Infinity War?

When Avengers: Infinity War was released on Digital HD, fans immediately noticed that Cull Obsidian was wearing what appeared to be part of Carol Danvers' costume around the waist of the villain.

While this has since been denied, we'll find out whether or not they've crossed paths next March.

8. A Closer Look At The Scarlet Witch

Avengers: Age of Ultron was released way back in 2015 but it was in March of this year that some stunning photos surfaced showing Elizabeth Olsen wearing the comic accurate costume she donned right at the end of the Joss Whedon directed sequel.

7. April Fool's!

Well, this was unexpected.

In what I thought was just a fun April Fool's Day article, I ran an article in which Joss Whedon "finally" broke his silence about Justice League. It included quotes like "I guess the world of DC is better suited to TV" and "I guess the movie was a little too much Justice League and not enough Avengers."

Needless to say, it got people talking but most of you got a laugh out of it which was the point!

6. A Big Avengers 4 SPOILER

This is a biggie, so if you want all the spoilery details, then you'd best click on the link above.

5. Ant-Man And The Wasp's First Trailer

Trailers are a funny thing. Ant-Man and The Wasp is here but there's no sign of Avengers: Endgame or Captain Marvel; it doesn't make sense, right? Well, social media means fans tend to see them elsewhere before they arrive on websites and something tells me that this being the movie to deal with the fallout from Captain America: Civil War is what really grabbed your attention.

4. Henry Cavill Hangs Up His Superman Cape

While it still hasn't been confirmed, reliable sources reported earlier this year that Henry Cavill has now decided to walk away from the role of Superman following his appearance in Justice League

Apparently, it all boiled down to contractual disputes with Warner Bros. and no one can blame the actor for wanting to try his luck elsewhere, especially after he was humiliated last November with that awful CGI face which instantly turned him into a meme.

3. Chris Evans Bids Farewell To Captain America?

When Avengers: Endgame finished shooting, Chris Evans shared a Tweet in which he seemingly bid farewell to the role of Captain America. With this apparent confirmation that he's hanging up the shield and Steve Rogers will be biting the dust, fans obviously responded with shock and horror.

Since then, Evans has said that this wasn't necessarily a goodbye to the role so we'll now just have to wait and see how things pan out next April.

2. A First Look At Venom Leaks Online

The first trailer for Venom debuted at CinemaCon and as is always the case, those in attendance couldn't help but leak a little something online for those of us not lucky enough to be there.

As a result, we got our first look at the Symbiote and the response was positive. At the time, it was impossible to tell whether or not he had the white spider logo on his chest but Sony had clearly done a good job bringing the character to life in a modern, live-action setting and that was appreciated.

1. Leaked Avengers 4 Promo Art

It had to be, right? Our first look at Avengers: Endgame came courtesy of some leaked promo art showing new looks for several of the characters and Captain Marvel alongside Iron Man and Thor.

We also got to see Thanos wearing a brand new suit of armour and wielding a sword.

Despite getting a teaser trailer, this probably remains our best look at the movie to date and it's no real wonder that it generated such a huge amount of attention as it was a massive reveal.

I’m sure some of these are due to “slow news day” syndrome. I’ll click on any article to see what’s happening in comments on a slow news day...unless it’s the seventeenth article about The Dark World concept art.

I’m actually amazed Stan Lee’s death wasn’t on the list, that felt like the biggest thing to happen this year other than James Gunn and the Avengers Annihilation trailer
