Anthony Russo On AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Tone, BATMAN V SUPERMAN, More CIVIL WAR

The latest from Civil War co-director Anthony Russo sees him discuss how comics influence the fight choreography, how he & Joe Russo are approaching Avengers: Infinity War tonally and also what he thinks of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Check it out after the jump!

In addition to Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man’s inclusion, co-director Anthony Russo also discussed returning to the director’s chair(s) for Avengers: Infinity War at the Comic-Con Experience in Brazil and how he and his brother, Joe Russo, are approaching the highly-anticipated two-part event stylistically. Furthermore, Russo also weighed in on a potential competition between Marvel and Warner Bros. with its upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice movie.

“The tone that we've been working in Winter Soldier and Civil War is very specific to the character of Captain America,” said Russo when asked how or if the tone of Cap’s movies will carry over into Avengers: Infinity War. “We like the fact that Captain America is basically a man only a little more so. He doesn't have this sort of fantasy elements that some of the other characters have. We came up with a style for the film that's very like visceral interface; a little hand-held [camera work], a lot of close-work, a lot of close fighting. It all suites Captain America. But yes now we're evolving into an Avengers movie after Civil War, it does ask for something different. And stylistically, we will be going in a different direction. It's a little early for me to talk too much about it [because] we sort of have this policy with like one movie at a time. There's still a lot that needs to be worked out as far as Infinity War goes.” About Civil War leading into the third and fourth Avengers installments, screenwriter Stephen McFeely recently told Entertainment Weekly that he and co-writer Christopher Markus “get to break this thing up and leave [the heroes] in weird state. So, when shit hits the fan we've got to figure out a way to pick them all up again.”

Back at Anthony Russo’s Omelete interview, the director was then asked about there being a competition with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice considering it hits theaters just over a month before Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War and both movies share some similarities. “Well, as filmmakers, my brother and I, we love the [superhero] genre,” Russo started. “The more good comic book movies there are, the better as far as we are concerned. We don't really look at it as a competition. We think [Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director] Zack Snyder is great, and we hope the movie is fun, great and cool, and something we all enjoy just like everybody else.”

Finally, when asked about the fight choreography for Captain America: Civil War, and specifically the Cap and Bucky versus Iron Man fight featured in the teaser trailer, Anthony Russo said it takes months to choreograph those type of scenes. “We're big fans of action movies and we sort of fetishize it,” he said. “We study a lot of action films. We look at the comic books for a lot of inspiration about certain moments we want to hit in the action. Our stunt team is amazing, they're all comic fans as well. And so we all sort of vibe off of what's done in the books. And figure out a more kinetic and energetic way to do it in a feature.” Asked about any inspirations for the fight scenes, particularly the Avengers versus Crossbones battle described in the D23 footage, Anthony Russo declared a fan-favorite. “We really lit up when we saw The Raid, so that movie excited us on that level,” revealed the director. “We saw that just before we executed Winter Soldier. So I think it helped inform some of our work on that. These characters are so interesting and their powers are so interesting. We love thinking about scenarios that challenge them, and sort of adversaries that give them difficulties. In that sequence, we bring back Crossbones and he's able to give Cap a run for his money in that scene which I think people will enjoy.”

Directed by Anthony & Joe Russo from a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely, Captain America: Civil War finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability. Get ready to pick a side and join the nonstop action playing out on two fronts when Captain America: Civil War opens in U.S. theaters on May 6, 2016. The movie has an ensemble cast led by Chris Evans, and includes Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Chadwick Boseman, Emily VanCamp, Daniel Brühl, Frank Grillo, with William Hurt, and Martin Freeman. Look, I didn't like Winter soldier as much as most people here, but judging FROM that film and their words about Civil War, they really know what they're doing.

I just felt there personally wasn't enough moments to display all the characters definitive traits, that's my main issue. There are character moments just not enough to my liking I suppose, I always care about characters more than plot, which is probably why I like Age of Ultron more than most(Like I said, that's just my main perspective, its cool if others love winter soldier, I still think it's good).

But I'd say Guardians has to be my favorite MCU film. Still, I always had faith in the Russo's pre winter soldier when everyone was bitching about how the film is going to be a joke(*sigh* people never learn), so I still love them despite the fact I was slightly underwhelmed by Winter soldier, they really do understand the characters inside out, and they're doing the universe some good by bringing much more cohesive elements together. So I think they're perfect to be leading the MCU even though I personally like Gunn more.

To just give an example, the type of character development that cap goes through in the film is that he is shaped by his surroundings, in other words he becomes interesting because his problems are interesting, I think it is important for your character to have interesting challenges but I wanted more,"On your left" moments. It's why I think Tobey's spidey sucks, take away all his problems, then it is literally just a stuttering kid with bug eyes, lol. So yeah, it's just a preference really. Rocket is interesting on his own(so is cap, he is righteous and charming) because he is so eccentric, weird, and crazy. This is just to give you a little more insight on how I assess characters and whatnot, we have similar interests but we're still our own people.

I guess you can say cap only changes when it means improvement, now he's a much better fighter, he's more experienced, he's a better leader, he now trusts his instincts more than the government now, he trusts less people, he's more cynical about the modern world but just as hopeful and humble as he was when he was a scrawny adolescent trying to join the army. But I do understand what you mean by his character not changing, he doesn't just randomly become blood thirsty or feel apathy towards others, he doesn't stutter when it comes to the greater good.

Only reason I MIGHT(really stressing might here) is because Spider man is genuinely one of my favorite characters EVER, but Doctor strange I think still seems to be more small, much more personal, and I love the cast, and James Gunn went out of his way to praise the script and Scott. I trust Gunn he is very honest. In fact, just as a sidebar, he recently said that he thinks this is the most talented filmmakers that Marvel has EVER had, so I hope that applies to others like Jon watts(and soon to bes..ex. cap marvel, inhumans, panther). My hopes is that every phase 3 film is phenomenal...fingers crossed.

I mean smaller in terms of personal problems and his struggle with his hands to be specific, but they DEFINITELY better not hold back on the huge spectacle of other dimensions, and the mind [frick]ery that is the visuals for sure. And just one last note, I know the whole ideal scenario for phase 3 would be every film to blow me away, sort of a ludicrous idea, due to the unlikely hood simply based on the fact we don't live in a perfect world, but I have a funny feeling, man, I really do think it will wow everyone and raise the bar(hopefully a number of times).

As a Hulk fan, I don't think Banner/Widow was that bad. I mean yea I prefer Betty with him but I didn't mind Widow. Both are sort of monsters in a way. Widow was created as one with how the Russians would train their spies and what she would have to become. Banner well we all know the monster he is. Both share the guilt of what they have down as monsters and wish they could have stopped it.

I mean I see what Whedon was trying to do and I'm alright with it knowing that they likely won't be together, and Hulk getting ScarJo lol.

Still prefer now that Bruce and Betty are a couple. Hopefully we may have Betty somewhat cameo in Thor 3. I mean I doubt we want more of Darcy's assistant.

These guys, along with Markus and McFeely (and a fair bit Peyton Reed) just make me so happy as a comic fan to have at the reins. They are such enthusiastic fans of the characters, they genuinely care about characterization and world building. Every interview I see with them just make me equal parts impressed and envious.

4 movies is about as much as anyone can ask for a creative team, but I'd be thrilled to have them do even more in Phase 4.

@DrDoom and @LEVITIKUZ

Ultimately, I think the Hulk/Widow thing was fine. Banner doesn't get much screen time outside of Avengers films, so they wanted to give him an arc beyond being Tony's Science Bitch. The relationship doesn't work, but it's sort of not supposed to work (hence, they aren't together by the end of the movie). There are some absolutely great moments like Widow's attraction to Banner because "he runs from the fight because he knows he'll win" and her unforgivable betrayal for setting the Hulk loose against Banner's will. Great stuff.

And there are some real clunkers in there. Natasha's damsel in distress arc. Banner shows up with a laser gun because... they needed to set up the betrayal. All of the pregnancy/family/weirdess that ultimately does not land. So, it's definitely a mixed bag.

And once bitten, never shy, I'm really hopeful that they find something a little off the wall for him in Ragnarok. Not necessarily romantic, but I can see Bruce and Jane having a really interesting relationship. Maybe fast friends in a way that kind of intimidates Thor. Outside of that, I'm really hoping that this is the time they finally crack the Thor code... Maybe what he needed all along was a reluctant wingman.

Whedon's one mind, though. Listening to the Winter Soldier commentary left me positively in awe of how four people can be so in synch and smart and methodical about how they approach things as diverse as filming, narrative, and themes. As much as I respect Whedon's work (and even directors of films I don't particularly like), everyone has weaknesses and blind spots that having a second set of eyes (or fourth) can see before they become a problem.

What if Winter Soldier was a fluke?

Listen to the commentary. Hear their thought processes and the way they go about making decisions. They're the real deal.

Sure, talented people can still sometimes turn out a bad work, but they have a crazy good track record on TV of managing sharp and engaging ensembles. That's exactly the task at hand for an Avengers film.
