AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Star Chris Evans Is Adamant No One Can Replace Robert Downey Jr. As Iron Man

With Avengers 4 set to be the final Marvel movie for many cast members, Chris Evans has weighed in on a replacement Iron Man and makes it clear that there's no chance Robert Downey Jr. can be followed...

Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, and Anthony Mackie recently appeared at ACE Comic-Con and it didn't take long until the subject of Avengers: Infinity War (and its untitled sequel) came up. While the trio couldn't share any specifics, the possibility of this being the last Marvel Studios movie for some of them was obviously addressed and Evans was quick to praise his longtime co-star Robert Downey Jr.

"He’s such a wonderful guy and is so talented, and so experienced, and so supportive," the actor explained. "He’s always been in my corner. I’ve always felt supported by him. He really brings everybody in to the group and makes sure everyone feels welcome, especially on this last one."

As for what comes next for Iron Man, in particular, Evans made it clear that he believes there's no chance Downey Jr. can ever be replaced as the Armoured Avenger. "He really is so irreplaceable. Nobody can ever be Iron Man. Nobody. It’s not a role like a Superman or a Batman that can kind of find different incarnations. No one can touch it. No one can." Well, that's a pretty bold claim!

Kevin Feige has previously said that Marvel will recast lead roles James Bond style as opposed to rebooting their franchises but it would be tough to have someone follow Downey Jr. and Evans makes a very good point here. @Desrow - He did start the genre for the MCU. And with using a hero not seen in live action before, that was revolutionary for 2008.

I don't think the MCU should (or even will) recast. Just do it like Star Wars and keep the saga going.

I got the first Lord of the Rings since I've never seen it, but I've been holding off watching it. So, I was rewatching The Avengers (great movie I think you guys would like it), and Iron Man calling Hawkeye Legolas (LOTR character, daddy af, played by Orlando Bloom JIYDK) prompted me to finally watch LOTR cause I took that as a sign that I should watch it.

While I was watching it, I immediately picked up on stuff that inspired Joss Whedon for The Avengers:

Sarumon = Loki (even down to their scepters)

Aragorn & Boromir = Steve & Tony

The Ring = The Tesseract

Council of Elrond scene = "We're not a team, we're a time bomb" scene

Death of Gandalf inspiring the Fellowship = Coulson's death inspiring the Avengers

Gandalf = Nick Fury

Frodo being the ring bearer = Bruce studying the Tesseract

Hell...Frodo = Bruce

Aragorn & Frodo = Tony & Bruce

Not to mention the team dynamic, as well as a circling team shot during the Nazgul fight and the famous Avengers circling team shot. But yeah, pretty cool.

@Brave - I’m rewatching it over the summer (NZ) break with my partner and daughter, who both haven’t seen it. We’re up to Two Towers and they are really taken by it so far.

Nice take on the similarities👍🏽
