AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Writer Christopher Markus Doesn't Want To See Bucky Barnes Become Captain America

Though he will become White Wolf in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War, co-writer Christopher Markus reveals that he doesn't want to see Bucky Barnes take on the mantle of Captain America. Check it out...

There's a great deal of uncertainty regarding what state the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be left in following the release of Avengers: Infinity War and its untitled 2019 sequel. One thing we do know is that Chris Evans is unlikely to return, and this has obviously led many to wonder what will happen to the mantle of Captain America when he does.

Multiple people have taken on the role of the star-spangled Avenger in the comics, most notably Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson, both of whom are main players in the MCU and seem aptly poised to take over following the character's exit and or death.

It turns out however that screenwriter Christopher Markus is adamant that one of those characters should definitely not pick up the shield, as he reveals in an interview with ScreenRant:

“I will say, just on a fan level, I think Winter Soldier’s so awesome that I’m always like, why are you wasting Winter Soldier and putting him in like Captain America outfit? You had two heroes now you got one.”

This may come as a surprise to many, especially considering Bucky's redemption arc and the fact that we've seen him wield the shield in tandem with Cap. Many feel that seeing the character take over from Steve Rogers would a fitting culmination of both his character progression as well as their friendship.

Whether Markus' comments are truly just on a "fan level" or a sign of what's to come following Avengers 4 remains to be seen. We'll have to wait until 3rd May 2019 to find out for sure.

What do you think? Would you like to see Bucky take over as Captain America? Or should the title be retired on Evans' exit? Leave your thoughts below.

Don't forgot Hawkeye was Cap for some time too in Fallen Son. And honestly I think a Fallen Son adaptation for Cap 4 could work really well, but with a lot less characters and Bucky and Falcon both going for that Cap mantle

They have given both Steve and Bucky great story arcs that I'm game for whatever direction they take them in. Both choices would be satisfying to their own degrees because Bucky on his own is already an interesting character with ties now to Black Panther. And the possibility of him donning the suit and shield is pretty exciting too.

I feel ya, man.
But you know...eventually it would be cool to explore something like this on the big screen.

Big fat no to FalconCap tho.

I personally like the Bucky Cap thing - the idea that Captain America becomes more than just a man, but a symbol. And Bucky feels the need to carry on that symbol. I'm fine with that.

Definitely don't want to see Bucky or Sam Wilson become Cap, at all. Maybe a little homage for a couple of scenes, but not full fledged Cap.

With all the diversity thing going on it would not surprise me that they put a falcon cap...disney sucks

Totally agree! Same goes for Falcon. He's already a cool character, why make him Captain America?

2 options. Either Bucky or US Agent. Sam Wilson sucked so hard as Cap. I'd like him to stay Falcon because I always liked him so much better as Falcon. I honestly think making it US Agent would be an awesome continuation and story watching him start out as someone who holds to the ideals of Captain America, but eventually taking it too far and becoming the opposite of what he was meant to be. Would make for some interesting story telling up to and including his eventual redemption.

[frick] that, Bucky as Cap is amazing. He's still the same character but just wearing Cap's suit.

"You had two heroes now you got one.”

Steve was dead, you could only have one anyway, so might as well combine them. It's only right that Cap's best friend takes over mantle. In the comics, he pretty much immediately took over as Cap after regaining his memories. Bucky will have 3 movies
where he's still good Winter Soldier. If Cap dies in 4, then it's perfect timing.

He was a pretty boring character in Civil War anyway. There are only two things they could do to make him interesting post Winter Soldier. One was turning him into an assassin again, and the other was his friendship Cap. He's not going to turn bad again, and if Cap dies, he'll have nothing to do. It's only right to make him put on the suit.

Bucky WILL be Cap in the MCU (reluctantly, whether it's in response to Evans character's death, or him just retiring), not Falcon, and then he'll eventually give up the mantle after awhile.

It's called character progression. Read up on it.

Always felt there should only be ONE Captain America. Bucky is fine as the Winter Soldier.

ONLY Bucky has the right to wield the shield after Steve Rogers; No one else. Yes I disliked Falcon as Captain America; Bucky was Cap's partner, only he should wield it. I felt his term as Cap was too short in the comics, I was enjoying it.

Bucky as Cap is a hard pass for me. US Agent? Cool. Stay Winter Soldier? Cool. But Stan can’t pull off Cap like Evans. I really fear that if Evans’ Cap falls, the MCU will never be the same... I say retire him & bring him back for cameos but don’t kill him.
