There's a great deal of uncertainty regarding what state the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be left in following the release of
Avengers: Infinity War and its untitled 2019 sequel. One thing we do know is that Chris Evans is unlikely to return, and this has obviously led many to wonder what will happen to the mantle of Captain America when he does.
Multiple people have taken on the role of the star-spangled Avenger in the comics, most notably Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson, both of whom are main players in the MCU and seem aptly poised to take over following the character's exit and or death.
It turns out however that screenwriter Christopher Markus is adamant that one of those characters should definitely
not pick up the shield, as he reveals in an interview with
ScreenRant:
“I will say, just on a fan level, I think Winter Soldier’s so awesome that I’m always like, why are you wasting Winter Soldier and putting him in like Captain America outfit? You had two heroes now you got one.”
This may come as a surprise to many, especially considering Bucky's redemption arc and the fact that we've seen him wield the shield in tandem with Cap. Many feel that seeing the character take over from Steve Rogers would a fitting culmination of both his character progression as well as their friendship.
Whether Markus' comments are truly just on a "fan level" or a sign of what's to come following Avengers 4 remains to be seen. We'll have to wait until 3rd May 2019 to find out for sure.
What do you think? Would you like to see Bucky take over as Captain America? Or should the title be retired on Evans' exit? Leave your thoughts below.
