Ever since some intriguing photos from Avengers 4 found their way online, seemingly showing past events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans have speculated about what they meant for Avengers 4 and even Avengers: Infinity War.
Among the more popular theories, are those that arugue we may see the Avengers embark on a journey through time or that we are seeing alternate realities. Now, in a recent interview, the Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo have ruled out the possibility of alternate realities.
“There’s no ‘What If’ scenarios. Everything that happens in these movies, happens in these movies. There’s not like, you know, some potential, a tangential reality,” Joe Russo explained before saying they wanted to avoid any sort of cop-out. “We wanted to commit to the storytelling and the most complete way and not give ourselves any kind of, you know, potential, uh, outs, like, uh, it was all a reality dreams.”
Following this statement, Anthony Russo chimed in echoing his brother’s comments by saying they “wanted to honor” and “commit to” the stakes of the two Avengers films.
In all, while these comments from the directing duo don’t rule out all the fan theories for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4, they seem to conclusively say we shouldn't expect to see the Marvel multiverse explored in the next two Avengers films. Also, their comments about preserving the stakes in the two movies should make those who haven’t been completely satisfied with the stakes in the MCU happy.
