AVENGERS 5: Shawn Levy In Talks To Direct; More Than 60 MCU Characters Could Return!

It seems Marvel Studios is very pleased with how Deadpool and Wolverine is shaping up, as they've entered talks with director Shawn Levy to helm the next Avengers movie!

Marvel Studios may have finally found a director for the next Avengers movie.

According to both Deadline and THR, Deadpool and Wolverine director Shawn Levy is in talks to helm the project, which was formerly known as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty prior to the departure of Jonathan Majors as the villainous Kang the Conqueror.

The studio reportedly offered Levy the gig in mid-March, but he turned it down at the time as he was still putting the finishing touches on Deadpool and Wolverine and was also working on the final season of Stranger Things.

Apparently, Marvel's decision to "push the film by several months" opened the window of opportunity, and negotiations are now underway.

It sounds like this if far from a done deal, however. Levy is said to have been given the latest script by Michael Waldron, but has not given an answer on whether he will definitely come aboard, and other filmmakers are in contention.

Deadline's report also mentions some intriguing new plot details.

"Sources close to the project say more than 60 MCU characters could reprise their roles, including everyone from Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth and Benedict Cumberbatch to Tom Hiddleston, Simu Liu and Karen Gillan. Unlike the first four films in which there was a core group that consisted of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Hemsworth and Ruffalo, many of the characters in this film would have equal footing, making it more of an ensemble feature instead of a handful of characters leading the team."

Despite Jonathan Majors' recent firing, Kang is still expected to appear, although we can't see the character playing nearly as big a role in the story. As we know, Loki writer Michael Waldron was hired to pen a new draft of the script, but reports indicate that the events of Loki season 2 are still going to inform the main plotline, which means Kang would likely remain on as a supporting character (at the very least).

We got word that Marvel/Disney had severed ties with Majors almost immediately after the news that he'd been found guilty broke, which would obviously seem to suggest that they were waiting for the verdict before making their decision. However, some insiders believe that the studio was never going to move forward with Majors as Kang, regardless of the outcome of the trial.

The trades don't mention anything about a new actor taking over as Kang, but do note that the movie "could potentially include multiple antagonists."

Avengers The Kang Dynasty 5 is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 1, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars to follow on May 7, 2027.

@0bstreperous - I mean they gave the gig to write Avengers 5 to the Ant-Man 3 writer before the film even came out.

@eagc1995 - Waldron wrote antman 3 I thought it was Jeff loveness

@0bstreperous - Yes it was Loveness, Waldron wrote Multiverse of Madness and was the Head Writer of Loki S1

Loveness did Ant-Man 3, so they tasked him to do Avengers 5 at first before Ant-Man 3 came out, then Ant-Man 3 came out and he got the boot and Waldron got the gig.

Because he's directing a movie starting 2 mutants, maybe there is some truth to the AvX rumors. If so, I have so many questions about how that could be pulled off.

Shawn levy I do like.

And before anyone tries to say anything, if it was revealed they hired him because they were looking for a white guy to direct, I'd have a problem with that.

Is it that hard to grasp that we just want directors picked for talent as opposed to race or gender?

@Origame - Levy is Jewish, and most American Jews do not identitfy as the "w" word.

@Shivermetimbers - Most Jews I've known (if they ever brought it up) would tell me they were "Jewish, not white".
I believe the U.S. census identifies some of them as "middle eastern descent" now.

Personally, I don't give a shit about identity politics, but I recognize it's a tool used by our rulers to divide and foster hatred.
It's a good tactic though, because the vast majority of people are tribalistic and dumb, so it happens to work.

@SheepishOne - come on. Are you genuinely gonna tell me no one's gonna say anything about being excited for a white director? On this site?
Origame
Origame - 6/4/2024, 7:23 PM
@WhateverItTakes - you're right. Disney would never look for specifically a white guy. We all know DEI only goes one way.
Origame
Origame - 6/4/2024, 7:26 PM
@Feralwookiee - honestly I think that argument is arbitrary. Like, if english people decided as a majority they're "British not white" that we're just suddenly gonna say they aren't white.

They have white skin. Only difference is a religious affiliation people can choose to be part of. They're white.
Slotherin
Slotherin - 6/4/2024, 8:37 PM
@Origame - this is why I've gone on about white being somewhat of an arbitrary concept in other threads but some don't get it.
Probably don't realize I feel the same way about "black" as well...

@Origame - Your racism is showing.
Origame
Origame - 6/4/2024, 8:54 PM
@RolandD - yes, it's racist to want people chosen for their talent.

Hiring and not hiring people because of their skin color? Nah, that ain't racist. That's progressive.

This was what I was talking about. I’m totally fine with Levy getting hired. If you were talking about other people, then I withdraw my accusation.
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 6/4/2024, 10:21 PM
@Origame - I’m having a hard time connecting the dots as to why his being white has anything to do with anything.

Marvel is just hiring their movie of the month guy to do some work on Avengers, and they’re gonna fire him if his movie sucks. This will be like the fifth time it’s happened.
