AVENGERS 5: Shawn Levy In Talks To Direct; More Than 60 MCU Characters Could Return!

It seems Marvel Studios is very pleased with how Deadpool and Wolverine is shaping up, as they've entered talks with director Shawn Levy to helm the next Avengers movie!

Marvel Studios may have finally found a director for the next Avengers movie.

According to both Deadline and THR, Deadpool and Wolverine director Shawn Levy is in talks to helm the project, which was formerly known as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty prior to the departure of Jonathan Majors as the villainous Kang the Conqueror.

The studio reportedly offered Levy the gig in mid-March, but he turned it down at the time as he was still putting the finishing touches on Deadpool and Wolverine and was also working on the final season of Stranger Things.

Apparently, Marvel's decision to "push the film by several months" opened the window of opportunity, and negotiations are now underway.

It sounds like this if far from a done deal, however. Levy is said to have been given the latest script by Michael Waldron, but has not given an answer on whether he will definitely come aboard, and other filmmakers are in contention.

Deadline's report also mentions some intriguing new plot details.

"Sources close to the project say more than 60 MCU characters could reprise their roles, including everyone from Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth and Benedict Cumberbatch to Tom Hiddleston, Simu Liu and Karen Gillan. Unlike the first four films in which there was a core group that consisted of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Hemsworth and Ruffalo, many of the characters in this film would have equal footing, making it more of an ensemble feature instead of a handful of characters leading the team."

Despite Jonathan Majors' recent firing, Kang is still expected to appear, although we can't see the character playing nearly as big a role in the story. As we know, Loki writer Michael Waldron was hired to pen a new draft of the script, but reports indicate that the events of Loki season 2 are still going to inform the main plotline, which means Kang would likely remain on as a supporting character (at the very least).

We got word that Marvel/Disney had severed ties with Majors almost immediately after the news that he'd been found guilty broke, which would obviously seem to suggest that they were waiting for the verdict before making their decision. However, some insiders believe that the studio was never going to move forward with Majors as Kang, regardless of the outcome of the trial.

The trades don't mention anything about a new actor taking over as Kang, but do note that the movie "could potentially include multiple antagonists."

Avengers The Kang Dynasty 5 is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 1, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars to follow on May 7, 2027.

So they are not waiting to see how Deadpool performs?
Goldboink - 6/4/2024, 6:55 PM
@0bstreperous -
Levy is a god. It will be a smash hit.
dragon316 - 6/4/2024, 7:05 PM
@0bstreperous - sounds about right as usual for marvel when fantastic four reboot before it was out in theaters see how well it did they plan sequel before see how well it it will do another marvel move being egotistical cocky not playing it safe as they should do from now they learn nothing from 2015 fantastic four movie

0bstreperous - 6/4/2024, 7:26 PM
@dragon316 - yeah ff looks like it's going to stink
eagc1995 - 6/4/2024, 8:33 PM
@0bstreperous - I mean they gave the gig to write Avengers 5 to the Ant-Man 3 writer before the film even came out.
0bstreperous - 6/4/2024, 9:00 PM
@eagc1995 - Waldron wrote antman 3 I thought it was Jeff loveness
eagc1995 - 6/4/2024, 9:11 PM
@0bstreperous - Yes it was Loveness, Waldron wrote Multiverse of Madness and was the Head Writer of Loki S1

Loveness did Ant-Man 3, so they tasked him to do Avengers 5 at first before Ant-Man 3 came out, then Ant-Man 3 came out and he got the boot and Waldron got the gig.

@0bstreperous - Between Stranger Things and Free Guy the dude’s on fire these days and his work his pretty quality. I’m okay with this.
Omario - 6/4/2024, 11:24 PM
@0bstreperous - yeah to me it's Russos or Russos. They wanted Secret Wars. Get back on track Marvel
0bstreperous - 6/5/2024, 8:52 AM
@Omario - Russos obvious choice it's either Feige's ego or they weren't paid enough

Because he's directing a movie starting 2 mutants, maybe there is some truth to the AvX rumors. If so, I have so many questions about how that could be pulled off.

@MCUKnight11 - multiverse probably. That seems like the most sensible way to try it imo.

@MCUKnight11 - told you guys even before it was a rumor on this site😉

Shawn levy I do like.

And before anyone tries to say anything, if it was revealed they hired him because they were looking for a white guy to direct, I'd have a problem with that.

Is it that hard to grasp that we just want directors picked for talent as opposed to race or gender?
Feralwookiee - 6/4/2024, 6:32 PM
@Origame - Levy is Jewish, and most American Jews do not identitfy as the "w" word.
SheepishOne - 6/4/2024, 6:33 PM
@Origame - What does race have to do with anything?
Feralwookiee - 6/4/2024, 6:36 PM
@SheepishOne - Uh, it's 2024.
EVERYTHING is about race.
If you don't agree, you're Hitler!

@Feralwookiee - where did you pull that from? Lol. Any I have known call themselves white.

Feralwookiee - 6/4/2024, 7:15 PM
@Shivermetimbers - Most Jews I've known (if they ever brought it up) would tell me they were "Jewish, not white".
I believe the U.S. census identifies some of them as "middle eastern descent" now.

Personally, I don't give a shit about identity politics, but I recognize it's a tool used by our rulers to divide and foster hatred.
It's a good tactic though, because the vast majority of people are tribalistic and dumb, so it happens to work.
Origame - 6/4/2024, 7:21 PM
@SheepishOne - come on. Are you genuinely gonna tell me no one's gonna say anything about being excited for a white director? On this site?
Origame - 6/4/2024, 7:23 PM
@WhateverItTakes - you're right. Disney would never look for specifically a white guy. We all know DEI only goes one way.
Origame - 6/4/2024, 7:26 PM
@Feralwookiee - honestly I think that argument is arbitrary. Like, if english people decided as a majority they're "British not white" that we're just suddenly gonna say they aren't white.

They have white skin. Only difference is a religious affiliation people can choose to be part of. They're white.
Slotherin - 6/4/2024, 8:37 PM
@Origame - this is why I've gone on about white being somewhat of an arbitrary concept in other threads but some don't get it.
Probably don't realize I feel the same way about "black" as well...
RolandD - 6/4/2024, 8:45 PM
@Origame - Your racism is showing.
Origame - 6/4/2024, 8:54 PM
@RolandD - yes, it's racist to want people chosen for their talent.

Hiring and not hiring people because of their skin color? Nah, that ain't racist. That's progressive.

RolandD - 6/4/2024, 10:04 PM
@Origame - come on. Are you genuinely gonna tell me no one's gonna say anything about being excited for a white director? On this site?
This was what I was talking about. I’m totally fine with Levy getting hired. If you were talking about other people, then I withdraw my accusation.
SheepishOne - 6/4/2024, 10:21 PM
@Origame - I’m having a hard time connecting the dots as to why his being white has anything to do with anything.

Marvel is just hiring their movie of the month guy to do some work on Avengers, and they’re gonna fire him if his movie sucks. This will be like the fifth time it’s happened.
HermanM - 6/5/2024, 1:33 AM
@Feralwookiee - Hollywood is theirs and they're exempt from the criticism they direct at whites.
Origame - 6/5/2024, 4:51 AM
@RolandD - ...no they aren't. At best they're gonna know this decision wasn't based on DEI.

No one just blindly praises white here for the sake of white. Name one user who does this.
Origame - 6/5/2024, 4:52 AM
@SheepishOne - ...because this is a company that has a history with DEI. We even just had a discussion about this with Jordan peele being in discussions specifically because they want a POC.
SheepishOne - 6/5/2024, 8:37 AM
@Origame - Jordan Peele is a genuinely good director. His being in discussions for directing a movie has nothing to do with his being a POC. He is one of the most prominent directors working today.

They might look for a POC to direct certain movies (Black Panther for example), but that doesn’t mean any director who signs on to any project was sought out through that lens.

And again, I fail to see what that has anything to do with Shawn Levy. Are you trying to say people should be mad that he’s white? Or happy? I don’t get it. He’s only in discussions because of Deadpool, which presumably is juggling a lot of different characters, and they want someone able to do that to direct Avengers.
Origame - 6/5/2024, 9:03 AM
@SheepishOne - but him being a good director isn't the point. The point is they're prioritizing poc directors when choosing.
SheepishOne - 6/5/2024, 10:18 AM
@Origame - You’re conflating two different things. Meeting with Jordan Peele to potentially direct a movie isn’t prioritizing a POC director. Especially because 1) the report doesn’t specify a movie or series and 2) when meeting with more prominent directors, reports in the past have indicated that the director usually pitches an idea for a movie they want to make, rather than them being sought out for a particular property.

And I still don’t get the Shawn Levy connection. Feels like a completely separate conversation entirely.
Origame - 6/5/2024, 10:56 AM
@SheepishOne - that isn't. Read the article. It specifically says they're talking with him because they're looking for a poc director.

The connection is that it's another mcu director and the obvious suspects would accuse me of racism if I didn't address the distinction.
SheepishOne - 6/5/2024, 11:17 AM
@Origame - No it doesn’t. The article mentions that he’s been in discussions with Marvel, and separately the article mentions a recent rumor that Marvel is looking for more POC directors. If I wrote an article reporting that Hugh Jackman is in discussions with Marvel about reprising Wolverine again, and then I add a paragraph recalling a rumor that Marvel is interested in a Hulk vs Wolverine movie, that doesn’t mean I’m claiming that Hugh Jackman is reportedly discussing Wolverine vs Hulk. What you’re describing is a journalistic implication. Two separate rumors there.

And nobody’s gonna call you a racist for not bringing up Shawn Levy’s race. What are you talking about?

Origame - 6/5/2024, 12:07 PM
@SheepishOne - dude, the whole thing is a rumor.
SheepishOne - 6/5/2024, 12:14 PM
@Origame - The point is, not everything is about race.
Origame - 6/5/2024, 12:22 PM
@SheepishOne - ...which is literally the point of my original comment.
SheepishOne - 6/5/2024, 1:57 PM
@Origame - Lol you were the first person to bring up Levy’s race, even if it was just to say it didn’t matter to you. It’s like when you tell someone not to think of purple elephants, you know they’re gonna think of purple elephants. It’s a way for you to bring the subject up while maintaining the “no, not ME” angle. I just don’t see the value in it.
