At San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday night, Marvel Studios revealed its Phase 5 and 6 slates (well, some of them, anyway). It's going to be a busy few years, and the launch of Disney+ means we're going to race through The Multiverse Saga pretty much twice as quickly as The Infinity Saga.
During that time, though, there will only be two Avengers movies: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars.
Common sense says that there's simply not enough time for Earth's Mightiest Heroes to assemble multiple times over the next few years. However, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige offered a better explanation during an interview with ComicBook.com.
"You know, we realized that it’s very different than Phase 1, 2, and 3. That there are more projects and less years and therefore, it didn’t seem right to culminate...we’re not gonna culminate every 10 months in an Avengers movie," the executive explains. "And each of the films themselves now has become quite big and are crossover events in many ways."
"And after the creative experience we had with Infinity War and Endgame, it felt like it was about capping a Saga," Feige continued. "Saving back-to-back Avengers films for the completion of a saga. And that’s really what we wanted to lay out today."
In other words, it sounds like the plan moving forward will be for each Saga to culminate with two Avengers films, making them true event movies on the same scale as Infinity War and Endgame. That's not a bad thing, and the MCU is definitely keeping us entertained with all these different stories and newly introduced characters.
Many new faces have shown up in recent post-credits scenes, of course, and Feige would go on to explain that while not all tags are about the future, "A lot of what we've been doing has been building to this larger story, obviously with The Kang Dynasty and the Multiverse Saga, and now I think people will, I hope, come along for the ride."
All signs point to it being a wild ride, and with Phase 5 kicking off with Ant-Man and The Wasp Quantumania next year, we'll soon be thrown into the midst of Kang the Conqueror's machinations for the MCU. What comes beyond that is unclear, though there are some very interesting trademarks floating around, including "Eternity Saga" and "Timeless Saga."
