Kevin Feige Knows Who The Next Team Of AVENGERS Will Be And Has Already Planned Out The MCU's Next Big Event

In a new interview, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige sheds some light on what the next roster of Avengers will look like, while confirming that the MCU's next event story has also been planned out.

There were a lot of huge announcements from Marvel Studios at Comic-Con on Saturday night, but perhaps the biggest surprise was that there was no mention of what comes next for The Avengers.

Nor did we get any sort of hint about the Marvel Cinematic Universe's next big bad now that Thanos has been defeated, but Kevin Feige teases that and more in the video below. When asked if he's already decided what comes next for Earth's Mightiest Heroes and whether we could see the Young Avengers on screen, Feige said to expect a "very different team than we've seen before."

"That's what Endgame was all about,"
he continued. "It will be a very different incarnation of the team with some people you've already met and some people you haven't met yet."

He was then quizzed on whether Marvel Studios has chosen its next big event and after confirming that that's the case, Feige promised that the groundwork will be laid for that in Phase 4. "We debated what we should announce today," Feige teased. "Should we announce 4 and 5? We've planned them out, we've got five years down the road and I was like, I think eleven projects in two years is plenty. Having not mentioned anything for two or three years."

You can hear more from Feige about the MCU's future in the player below.

During the panel, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed that every movie released up until now is part of "The Infinity Saga." Here, we see the brand new logo for those first three phases.

Image

This is a fairly simple logo but one which may match the tone. Kevin Feige said it will be 100% Jack Kirby-inspired so it's a little surprising that there's not more evidence of that in this title.

Image

Sadly, we'll never get to see Iron Man battle the real Mandarin but he will be the lead villain of this movie. In case the title didn't make it clear, that logo emphasises those ten (magic?) rings too.

Image

The Doctor Strange logo has received something of an overhaul but it's interesting to see how the subtitle is even bigger. Scarlet Witch will appear in the sequel so the red may be a homage to her.

Image

Just like Thor: Ragnarok had a very unique logo, so too does Thor: Love and Thunder. That's a title which could have a number of meanings, particularly now we know Valkyrie is indeed gay.

Image

Honestly, what else did you expect? This is to the point and exactly what you would expect from a gritty movie featuring the fan-favourite Avenger. It's good to see her logo front and centre too.

Image

The biggest surprise at Comic-Con was, of course, the fact that Blade is returning to the big screen. This logo perfectly emcompasses the fact that the Vampire Hunter operates both night and day.

Image

This may be titled The Falcon and The Winter Soldier but the presence of Captain America's shield should tell you all you need to know; Sam Wilson is going to take on that persona on Disney+!

Image

This is still a pretty weird title but it's easy to see the 50s inspiration here. It's been said on a number of occasions that the show will have a retro aesthetic as we head into the MCU's suburbs.

Image

This title treatment is very different and it's hard to say what, if anything, it tells us about the series. What we do know, though, is that it will revolve around the God of Mischief from 2012.

Image

This is simple but awesome and if you look closely, you may notice that we get what could be our first look at the show's animation style. Is that the Red Skull wearing Captain America's suit?

Image

The logo for Hawkeye is obviously inspired by Matt Fraction's run and that makes sense, especially as the comic book series revolved around Clint Barton training and working with Kate Bishop.
Image

And here it is, Marvel's Phase 4 slate. However, this probably isn't the entire slate because these movies and TV shows are only spread out over two years and that would be a very short Phase!

Should they keep someone from the original 6? Hulk, Thor or Hawkeye?

I think it's safe to assume after what we've got coming up, it's the F4 and X-Men's time to be intergrated into things. That being said, I have NO clue what the next Avengers roster could be. Any number of combos could happen. If I had it my way? I'd do Hickman's Avengers World. A huge roster team that spans the globe. The characters are there for it, give it a shot! You'd even be able to get some of the mutant characters from the team on there now. Wishful thinking! I just want to see more smart Hulk lol

Make it after 2024. It would be a good way to give the brand a rest.

@PantherKing - for now they could replace Avengers with Defenders, introduce Namor and Silver Surfer and team them up with Doctor Strange, Valkyre, Hulk. Closest thing we have to seeing that team on screen was the two tribute episodes Justice league/Justice League unlimited did

Yeah well they also claim Thanos and the Infinity gauntlet was the plan from get go and it’s clear, from the fact the ‘Gauntlet’ was an Easter Egg in Thor and they had to turn the Cosmic Cube into one of the stones, that they decided on that after putting him as the stinger in Avengers. They’ll have ideas for sure but it’ll be a case of, let’s see what the audience likes the most in theses next films and work from that.

@Twenty23Three -

I agree with what you've said for the most part, I don't think they fully mapped out the Infinity event fully when making some of the films, but once they had that as a clear goal worked to make it happen. Which is fine of course since it worked out very well for them.

Let’s see what the audience likes the most in theses next films and work from that.

I doubt it. I think now, with the experience they've gained, there's absolutely no reason why they'd fumble through the early introductions of a second event. They clearly are more confident and the planning is likely more succinct.

The general audience (the target) aren't comic book readers and didn't know anything about Thanos when they started watching these films so there's no way they'd rely solely on what the audience likes before initiating another big event.

@Twenty23Three - When did they claim Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet was the plan from the get-go?

It's been explained many many times that Thanos was Joss Whedon's idea to appear in Avengers. Up until Whedon was on board they didn't even have plans for Thanos at all. They've made no secret of that.

@CorndogBurglar - Thanos was not Whedon's idea, he always wanted to do Ultron, and even admitted that he didn't really know how to handle Thanos.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 7/22/2019, 5:43 AM
@LongMayHeReign - When they were developing Avengers it was Whedon's idea to include Thanos. All those quotes of him saying he had no idea how to handle Thanos meant AFTER his cameo in Avengers.

He even said he left the character out to dry because he put him in Avengers with no idea how to handle him in the future.

@LongMayHeReign - He straight up said that he included Thanos as a cameo because Thanos was the biggest villain he could think of.
LongMayHeReign

@CorndogBurglar - I know Joss put him in the film, but my point is he didn't just do so without Kevin learning what the overall plan would be. Joss has even said he only wanted to do the first Avengers with Loki if he could do Ultron in the sequel so Thanos was not even on his radar until way down the line.

These three, alongside T’Challa, Carol, Dr. Strange and Wanda, would make a killer team.

Young Avengers with Iron Lad (Harley), Ant-Girl (Cassie), Viv (Viv), and Hawkeye (Kate) seems like a no-brainer to me. That target demographic won't target itself.

I’d almost be disappointed if it wasn’t Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Ant-Man, the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, Falcon, Shang-Chi and Spider-Man.

Someone wisely pointed out that Phase 4 was announced with 10 projects over the next 2 years but Feige just noted they have 11 projects, so either there's something else we don't know about or Spider-Man 3 is definitely coming July, 2021

As far as an Avengers team, I've resigned to the fact that we're probably going to get a mix of new legacy characters, a few holdovers and possibly a new character or two

-Captain Marvel
-Falcon
-Black Panther
-Kate Bishop
-Ant Man
-The Wasp
-Yelena
-Shang Chi
-A Thor
-Mantis?
-An Eternal?
-Scarlet Witch?

One thing to consider is that we're likely past the point of every MCU character being in an Avengers movie. Feige likely wants to build up the anticipation of a thing like that again, so the mega event cross overs probably aren't what we're getting for at least another 2 Avengers movies. This means we're likely not getting Dr. Strange in this one or all the Eternals. I also am skeptical of any Guardian besides Mantis showing up because the others were said to be ending with GOTG3 per Gunn, though things can always change. I'm also weary of Scarlet Witch's future, because I'm starting to get the feeling she is going in a somewhat villainous direction or at the very least getting into some things that may put her into similar territory as Dr. Strange, essentially beyond the Avengers for the time being.

All I know is that the MCU has some tough choices ahead for balance. They are now at a point where the universe is so expansive that even their small scale team ups become a tougher juggling act, and this is all without even knowing who would direct this next Avengers movie.

@OmegaDaGrodd - I’m not so sure legacy will taking up too much spotlight. If you are introducing all these new heroes and still showcasing the new holders of these old mantles then that is a lot of characters.

Plus if they were really going to highlight Falcon as the new Cap I think they would have given him his own Captain America solo movie and not have him share billing on a Disney+ series. And I have hard time believing that Natalie Portman who is a few years older than Chris Hemsworth is going to be the Thor for the next several phases. An awesome one off appearance seems more likely. And call me crazy but Florence Pugh did not speak like someone who was going to be taking over the mantle of another superhero long term.

It is going to be a bit of a balancing act. But I have to imagine they are going to want to showcase their new solo stars in the new Avengers movies.
