Following in the footsteps of The Avengers was never going to be an easy task but with Joss Whedon back at the helm, Avengers: Age of Ultron gave it a good try back in 2015. Introducing new heroes and a terrifying villain in the form of Ultron, the sequel brought an awful lot to the table and generated a lot of excitement among fans. While Thanos will no doubt be an even more formidable threat in Infinity War, we're now taking a look back at the movie by sharing some incredible concept art.

It seems appropriate to kick things off with the villain the sequel is named after and we've singled out the best designs from the hundreds Marvel Studios considered bringing to the screen. Many of these have never been seen online before and it's fascinating to see what might have been in the movie.

From comic book accurate takes to designs which couldn't be any further from what we ended up seeing and those likely to give you nightmares, you're definitely going to want to check these out. So, all you need to do is click either one of the buttons below to check out the full list of amazing artwork!

Ultron Dons Iron Man's Mask

Amore well put together version of Ultron's first form, Iron Man's mask is more predominantly featured and that makes him the villain as a result. Could be that why the mask was burned by acid?

Bleeding Edge Ultron

These futuristic versions of Ultron bear a passing resemblance to Iron Man's Bleeding Edge armour and the one on the left even has some additional arms (similar to the Age of Ultron comic book).

Ultron Stands Tall

Ultron is a large figure in Avengers: Age of Ultron and he looks extremely imposing here as he rises up and looks ready for action. These takes on the bad guy appear to quite a bit more intricate too.

The Villain Sees Red

Colour has frequently been used in the comics to help express Ultron's emotions but his lifelike mouth in live-action mean that wasn't necessarily needed. What a shame as it's such an amazing visual!

Maniacal Laugh

The villain strikes some very evil looking poses in these pieces and you have to believe he's cracking a classic maniacal laugh in that shot on the left. Needless to say, he looks seriously terrifying!

Ultron Takes Shape

You can see that Ultron is starting to take shape here and while he bears a striking resemblance to what ended up on screen, there are some key changes here that show what a long process it was.

A Non-Human And Human Ultron

What a difference we see here! On the left, we have a very robotic Ultron and on the right, there's a far more humanoid version whose mouth and eyes make him look a lot more like a real boy.

Comic Book Inspiration

These pieces could very easily pass as comic book artwork and the one on the left would have been very interesting to see on the big screen. The question is, would it have worked in live-action?

Ultimate Ultron

Ultron's final form in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel clearly decided early on how the villain would look once he was enhanced with Vibranium but his head, in particular, underwent some alterations!

Start Page/Page 1

Ultron's connection to Iron Man was problematic for many fans but the piece on the right is clearly inspired by Tony's armour as he has repulsors on both his hands and feet and just looks like the hero!

The Monster Rises

Another Mark I version of Ultron which looks vastly different to what ended up on the big screen, I wouldn't mind betting that this interpretation was inspired by the IG-88 assassin droid in Star Wars!

Don't Make Him Angry

Another piece which uses colour to show Ultron's rage, the villain doesn't look at all happy here and it really is a shame that we didn't end up seeing more shots like this in the movie itself.

Tony Stark's Most Horrific Creation

Marvel clearly found a look they wanted for Ultron as time passed and both of these images show how that evolved and the process which went into giving the villain a distorted and damaged Iron Man mask.

Which Works Better?

On the left, we have a very sci-fi, non-human looking Ultron and, on the right, the villain has both a body and face which definitely goes some way in making him look more man than machine.

The Villain Sits On His Throne

On what appears to be a floating throne, Ultron sits and ponders how best to destroy Earth's Mightiest Heroes. It's a cool design and one which is definitely reminiscent of the source material.

Evil Iron Man

As we've established, Iron Man was used as a basis for Ultron's first look and he appears to be full-on evil Iron Man in this image as he uses one of Tony Stark's masks as his own face here.

More Awesome Alternate Designs

Ultron has had many forms over the years in the comic books and it's fascinating seeing how each of those ended up influencing the many, many different designs Marvel's artists contemplated using.

Confrontation With The Avengers

Ultron's confrontation with The Avengers was seriously cool and this awesome piece of artwork shows the villain's first form which very much resembles a skeleton with blood (well, oil) dripping from it.

Ultron Is Born!

These two massively different designs clearly influenced the final product as it's easy to see how they both influenced what ended up on the big screen when Ultron first made his presence felt.
