AVENGERS: ENDGAME Directors Explain Why Carol Danvers Has "Glammed Up" Since CAPTAIN MARVEL

Our first glimpse of Carol Danvers in the Avengers: Endgame trailer came in from backlash from fans who were angry that the character seemed to have been "glammed up" since the events of Captain Marvel...

In Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers didn't seem to concerned about her appearance and was happy to rock a frizzy hair, no make-up combo. But our first glimpse of Brie Larson in the recent Avengers: Endgame trailer revealed a noticeably different look for her character.

This came in for some criticism from a small contingent of fans, who accused directors Joe and Anthony Russo of "glamming up" Danvers for her appearance in the superhero ensemble - even thought she filmed her scenes for Endgame first!

While speaking to /Film at the recent CinemaCon junket, co-director Joe Russo revealed that Larson actually decided on Carol's look herself.

“She [filmed Avengers: Endgame] before she filmed Captain Marvel, and I think she was experimenting with what the character was. And those were the choices that she and her hair and makeup team had made. And I think as she started to gain a deeper understanding of the character, especially as she approached her own movie. She started to make different choices and as an artist she should be afforded that right to make whatever choice that she wants to make.”

Of course, even without the Russos' clarification this wasn't a big deal, and could easily have been explained away by simply assuming that Carol decided to change-up her look a bit after going make-up free for two decades. But then, outragers gonna outrage.

God 25 years have passed, just give it a rest. I didn't like the movie but I don't get the hate for CM.

@jj2112 - It's so annoying haha, I was really disappointed with the movie if I'm being perfectly honest but it's not the first and I'm sure not the last MCU movie that I'll feel that way about. Felt pretty similarly about Doctor Strange (found it formulaic and lackluster save for the novel 3rd act decision with Dormammu) but he ended up being my favorite character in Infinity War. It's a long-running cinematic universe! Everything can improve!

@DillonEnnis - Agreed! I feel exactly the same about Doc Strange.

@DillonEnnis - This is me, but BP is the other movie im just not a fan of. I mean we all hated on Thor, Thor 2, IM2 and AOU to some degree - noone is screaming MISANDRY!!!!!! People have opinions, and some people like what others dislike, and thats OK. For me CM and BP were just OK, i would watch CA:FA way more than either of those, but thats just me.

@jj2112 -
"I don't get the hate for CM"

TLDR;
• Actress does not make herself seem likable in interviews or public
• Her character is written to be cocky and is at the initial stage of her character arc so she is inherently unlikable in some respects
• The character is insanely overpowered and other than cockyness (Which is never treated as a flaw) is never demonstrated as having a flaw making it difficult to relate to her
• The storylines that introduced her make her inclusion feel incredibly forced and unnatural along with risking diminishing the importance of other characters.

@Scarilian - majority of people don’t watch interviews. Unless those silly wired ones. Cocky? She was written like that in comics. She isn’t playing cocky Thor in first Thor was cocky, same with tony stark in first iron man, same with doctor strange in his first movie. Character not insanely overpowered, Kree that weak. I never need the feeling to relate to a hero, it’s a movie, I go to be entertained. No storyline was bad except forcing avenger as her nickname.

Joe Russo went one further on this:

Russo said he and his brother Anthony offer suggestions to actors but the actors largely settle on individual character looks themselves. For example, the Russos may suggest to Chris Evans that he grow a beard but Evans decides how big that beard is. Or they suggest to Scarlett Johansson that Black Widow have a new haircut because time has passed, and Johansson decides on the style of the haircut. “We empower them to have control over their characters because they need to be comfortable playing those characters,” Russo said.

Sad how they were even asked this question. Who gives a [frick]? I bet these are the same people who took issue with Wonder Woman's hairless armpits.
