When Hugo Weaving refused to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios turned to The Walking Dead's Ross Marquand to play the Stonekeeper version of the Red Skull in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War. Fans were unable to tell the difference, and the villain's return to the big screen was considered a triumph.
Marvel Studios concept artist Constantine Sekeris has shared an early version of the Red Skull which is significantly different to what ended up on screen, and downright monstrous!
Looking like he's stepped straight out of a horror movie, this Stonekeeper is clearly a shell of the man who once ruled over HYDRA, and appears to be inspired by a cross between He-Man and ThunderCats villains Skeletor and Mumm-Ra. As memorable as this might have been, it was possibly too far from the Red Skull we met in Captain America: The First Avenger.
In his Instagram post, Sekeris details his thought process for this version of the iconic baddie.
