It Sounds Like AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Will Be Quite A Departure From The Comic Books

Thought that reading the acclaimed Infinity Gauntlet storyline would clue you in to what to expect from Avengers: Infinity War? Well, based on these comments from Mark Ruffalo, you'd best think again...

While it's clear that the Infinity Gauntlet comic book series has inspired Avengers: Infinity War, it now sounds like fans expecting a direct adaptation are going to be disappointed. That probably shouldn't come as a surprise but it's news sure to disappoint those who may have been hoping to see Thanos worshipping Death or Adam Warlock assembling a team to go and do battle on a cosmic battlefield.

Asked in an on-set interview if there were any specific comic books he read to help prepare for the movie, Mark Ruffalo explained that there weren't really any which would have helped the cast much.

"This one we’re like, in new territory really. And it’s so different from the comic books.
There’s elements that are clearly the same but when you really start to get into the story everything changes. Planet Hulk was a big influence for Thor 3, and the idea, the inkling of World War Hulk starts to… I read (that) way before doing this and there’s some interesting stuff in there, but honestly nothing so far directly related to this." So, there go those Avengers: World War Hulk theories!

As for whether or not Ruffalo actually sat down to read Infinity Gauntlet, Ruffalo added: "Yeah, that is informative as well, but then again it just gets so… off of that topic that it starts to become a little confusing where you’re like “Why isn’t this in there? Why are we doing this?" What do you think of these remarks? As always, feel free to weigh in with your thoughts in the comments section below.

Ruffalo: the best person to interview if you want potential leaks.

Never read Infinity Gauntlet so not worried. A3 & A4 will be epic nonetheless!

Also, not sure how many thought this would be a straight adaption. Some characters simple don’t exist (yet) within the MCU. And CW was a clear indicator they have to adapt the story to fit the film.

@ChangAlang - IG is the best comic book novel ever. No doubt. It brings the Thanos Quest 1 & 2 right into the story line

@RaMan - I really need to one day get around to reading a lot more. Should I read Thanos Quest 1&2 first?

@ChangAlang - Yeah. We keep praising them for faithfulness to the source but that is clearly only in terms of characterization. In terms of stories, it's basically just the premise that's the same. Everything else is it's own thing.

@ChangAlang - Yes. It’s my favorite comic EVER. It’s cosmic, with my favorite character ever Thanos at his most absolutely cunning. The artwork was consistent and clean and it reveals the origin of the infinity gems.

@ChangAlang - absolutely. That way you get to know about the eternals and the Collector and Grandmaster from the two books on how Thanos was able to get each stone. Those are great stories too.

@ChangAlang - out of all the books I’ve read, infinity gauntlet stands out as a cut above the rest (along with new 52 swamp thing and Batman. Goddamn I love you Scott Snyder).

Seriously one of the best comic stories out there. in terms of pure epicness, it probably has the most powerful beings I have ever seen in fiction. Some of the largest scale battles. It’s poetic. It’s devastating. It’s [frick]ing infinity gauntlet.

Damn shame that they think their ideas are better, because I guarantee they aren’t. With each new thing I hear about the story, my hype does little by little. The Russos did a great job adapting tws, but said “[frick] you” to the civil war and infinity war comic.

I don’t think I like these guys, or that mcfeely guy. I wonder how much is his fault.

How did I forget to mention the art. Best I’ve seen before 2000. Probably.

@ChangAlang - I'd recommend reading Marvel Two-In-One Annual 2 and some of the other old stories that established Thanos and then move onto the Thanos Quest. The Thanos Quest really set up the IG limited series well.
