Edgar Wright Seemingly Confirms Ant-Man Will Not Appear In The Avengers!

Many fans are still hoping that the iconic Avenger will appear in the movie next year, but according to Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish at the Kapow! Comic Con this weekend, that just does not fit in with his and Edgar Wright's script...

"We delivered the second draft of 'Ant-Man two days ago, and we're really happy with it," Joe Cornish told the packed out crowd at Kapow! on Saturday. "We’re currently working on it, not right now. But the day after tomorrow we’ll go to Los Angeles and...[nods to Edgar]."

The director of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World expanded on this by detailing the lengths the duo went through to get the movie made.

"We kinda have a stock response now, it’s true to say we’ve been writing it in some form. Weirdly, the treatment for ‘Ant-Man’ exists before Marvel Studios," he revealed. "There was a treatment that Joe and I did when Artisan had the kind of lower-rung Marvel properties and we wrote a treatment for it that exists before ‘Hot Fuzz’."

Wright added: "Basically, when I met Kevin Feige I said, ‘Oh, did you ever get our ‘Ant-Man’ treatment?’ and he had never read it so we submitted it properly like four years later. So it’s something me and Joe have genuinely been working on for nearly a decade and at some point we’ll finish the script."

Despite previous reports that Ant-Man will not have a role in The Avengers, there are still many fans who are desperately hoping that both he and the Wasp will have some sort of role in the 2012 movie. While a cameo of some sort isn't out of the question, Edgar Wright was quick to point out that a full blown appearence just would not fit in with the script he's just handed in.

"The thing is, the script that I’ve written...the chronology of it or the way it works wouldn’t really fit in with what [The Avengers] do. And my film is very much an introduction to [Ant-Man], and so it wasn’t something where it felt right to introduce him in [Whedon's] film."

Many thanks to DCMarvelFreshman for the use of the above banner

With an all star cast which includes Chris Evans as Captain America, Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Marc Rufallo as Bruce Banner, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, The Avengers is set to be released on May 4, 2012!

Doesn't mean that much.

Both Fury and Barton were later additions to Thor so if they can work Antman in without being to jarring or screwing up The Avengers I am sure he will get a cameo.

Ant-man is a weiner. Dont care much for him but he should still have a cameo in The Avengers.

Hey DC dudes,

Ant Man > the Atom

(fanning the fire so this thread won't suck :) )

The Atoms even more of a loser. Not a fan of "superheros" who shrink and grow. Seems kinda pointless if you ask me.

He still fails to mention either one of the Pyms. Some time ago it was reported that Wrights Ant Man film would feature Scott Lang not Pym. Every single time Ant Man is mentioned in relation to The Avengers, the name Pym is completely avoided (both Hank and Janet.)

After almost 2 years of people questioning Wright, Fiege, Whedon and everyone else involved with the film, you would think someone would mention Hank or Janet but no. We hear Ant Man over and over. And as far as Jan goes, we have consistantly heard who would not be playing her as opposed to hearing she will not appear in the film.

PS. MINOR SPOILER Pym is mentioned in the Thor script so at least his name is being set up for the film.

@GillytheKid33: Shrinking is an excellent power for espionage... Also, objects can be shrunk too, so he can have lots of 'gadgets' shrunk down to be called on when needed (as he has been doing recently in the MU).

The power isn't lame - just your imagination. :)

I think Ant Man carries a gadget or two in his pocket. A ray gun, insect pocket communicator, and a cute robot like that android mascot but really is a mini-Ultron.

The Atom blows, but Hank Pym is a cool cat. DC dudes who don't know him can watch the Avengers EMH cartoon or read the Avengers academy comics. Long story short - Hank Pym is the expert when you can't find Mr Fantastic around and Pym is even crazier than Reed Richards.

Plus he has a wife who's hawt (but dimensionally displaced now) and doesn't go crazy like Ray Palmer's wife.

An Ant-Man movie centered on Scott Lang may be more workable than one centered on Hank Pym. I've said it here before, but for as much as I like Pym, he's just not a strong enough character to build a movie around.
Hawks, I hope you're right about Scott Lang. That could work. Whedon and them are probably doing all this just to enjoy aggravating internet board posters.

Can't remember his name at this moment, but I stil think the Irredeemable Ant-Man is the one who would make the most successful movie of any Ant-Man out there. He is so different from most superheroes that he would provide a nice twist to the genre, and hook in curious non-readers.

JohnTom88 - 4/11/2011, 6:33 AM
But Scott Lang is dead and not really that genius.

Only Henry Pym can make the Ant Man the Marvel Studios Fantastic Four franchise since God knows when Fox is going to give up the FF franchise.

Hawksblueyes is correct..**SPOILER** PYM IS MENTIONED IN THE SCRIPT IM THINKING HE HAS CLOSE AFFILIATION TO SHIELD IT WAS THE WAY HIS NAME WAS MENTIONED MADE ME THINK HE WAS A SCIENTIST FOR SHIELD..AS FOR ANT-MAN-GIANT MAN..NOT SURE HOW PYM WILL EVOLVE DOWN THE LINE

Wait... so Fox don't use the original five X-Men and thats a travesty but Marvel don't use the original Avengers and people are ok with this? Another reason I hate fanboys.

for all the trouble they caused this antman movie better be good.to not have one the founding members in the first movie is stupid.but N ^ is right though i heard about this movie developing along time ago he's only working on the second draft or something like that, whats taking so long?
CaptainLantern
CaptainLantern - 4/11/2011, 6:58 AM
@comicb00kguy - The Irredeemable Ant-Man is Eric O'Grady. And you are definitely right it would make a great movie.

@Frogman - The problem is X-Men First Class is that almost NO original members appear (I think beast is the only one). Thor, Cap, and Iron Man have always been known as the "prime" Avengers. Although Ant Man rules, it doesn't completely kill me to not see him in the film.
OptimusPrimeTime
OptimusPrimeTime - 4/11/2011, 7:05 AM
I actually have no problem whatsoever, with them not being in the film. Simply because of the fact it means more screentime for IM, CA, Thor, Hulk and Hawkeye; all of which we will have been introduced to, save for Hawkeye....

To introduce Ant-Man and Wasp, they would have to devote some kind of screen time to their backstory, which would detract from the film I think.

For the 2012 Avengers, cameos > lead roles

Yes this is a good director who doesn't sacrifice his story for some stupid Easter eggs just to benefit someones franchise. He has a true respect for films.

The only way they'll get (lower-wrung)Ant-Man respected is in an ensemble like The Avengers 2, or as a quirky comedy (ala Scott Pilgrim).

I would rather just have pym and janet as scientists anyways. the shrinking thing is just kinda lame, even though it would be effective.

This may sound a bit 'fanboyish' but if that script does not fit with the possibilty of the Pyms being involved in the Avengers & current MCU...THEN TO HELL WITH THAT SCRIPT!!!!!

Hank Pym is a great character... Ant-Man however isnt.. i like the idea of the Ant-Man stuff happening before avengers he is such a corney hero.

Have an Ant-Man film that predates the Avengers.. but atleast mention Hank Pym and set up future appearances from him and Ultron.
paptschik
paptschik - 4/11/2011, 9:13 AM
I still hope this "Pym in the 60s" stuff gets thrown out of the window.
Pym is my favorite Marvel character and basically reducing him to appearing in flashbacks in an Ant-Man movie and never getting any screentime anywhere else is a thought I just don't like. Of all the characters that were Ant-Man, Pym is easily the one with the most story potential. We have interaction with Wasp, we have his insecurities, we have Ultron, we have his genius, there is just so much to work with.
And I mean normal Pym. Not this Ultimate Pym insanity.

Marvel already has too much on their plate for the next 2-3 years. You have Avengers, IM3, CA2 and Thor2. We know Avengers will be out next year, so that would lead o e to believe that the other three may come out the next year or at least two, with Avengers 2 the following. So see, just no time for a solo movie about a wife beater.....LOL! But seriously, maybe an Avengers 1&2 cameo.
