EDITORIAL: Why I Can't Help But Feel A Little Disappointed Looking At The Avengers Assembled!

That's right, I said it! Despite the undeniably epic sight of The Avengers assembled in the recent promo art, there's a part of me which can't help but feel a little let down when looking at the team. Why? Find out here...

Editorial Opinion

While there can be no doubting that seeing The Avengers assembled sends a shiver of excitement down my spine, there's another feeling I get every time I look at the three pieces of art which have been released so far. Disappointment. Sure, we have Captain America, Iron Man and Thor all standing side-by-side, along with Black Widow and Hawkeye, but the team just feels a little...bland. The fact is, we've already seen the big three showcase their powers, and although I have no doubt that Joss Whedon has plenty of tricks up his sleeve (and let's face it, seeing any of these guys kicking ass will NEVER get boring) I'm not exactly chomping at the bit to see what the two members of the team who have no powers at all can do. Sure, it'll be awesome to see Hawkeye on the big screen, and more from Black Widow, but The Avengers are lacking something truly new and exciting.

Hang on a second! I haven't forgotten about the Hulk. With a slightly new design and use of motion capture, seeing the Green Goliath coming to life on the big screen in 2012 is perhaps the thing I'm most excited for. Before I go any further, there are a few things I want to make crystal clear. I am in no way bashing The Avengers, and have been looking forward to the movie for as long as I can remember. From what I've seen in the brief trailer at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger and the descriptions of footage shown at D23 earlier this month, I'm pretty much already convinced that it'll be the best comic book movie ever. This editorial is simply being written from the perspective of a fanboy, and just as I couldn't help but feel a little let down by the lack of Black Widow's Russian accent in the otherwise (mostly) enjoyable Iron Man 2, this is a small gripe which will not effect my enjoyment of the movie itself. After all, I'd have to be pretty petty if it did!

I accepted a long time ago that Ant-Man or Wasp would not be in this movie. We've known about it for a while, and it would be ridiculous to keep on whining about it. At this point, we should all pretty much be over that. Frankly, Marvel Studios dropped the ball, and in my opinion should have used any of the five movies which came before this one to introduce them. You see, what really disappoints me is the fact that the team ends up being a little bland without. When I imagine what it would have been like to see Giant Man walking through the streets of Manhattan, or the Wasp taking on the Hulk, it kills the fanboy inside of me that we may have to wait a very long time (if ever) to see that happen! It's an even greater shame that Fox reportedly own the rights to Quicksliver and the Scarlet Witch, because The Ultimates is the perfect proof of how these characters serve to enhance the team as a whole. That's right, I'm using the much maligned The Ultimates as an example of the blueprint The Avengers should be following. Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch's roles were minor in that series, while the spotlight was never on Giant Man and Wasp as much as the six members who we'll see together on the big screen next year. And yet, their inclusion served to make the team all the more interesting in regards to relationships and the powers on display.

However, it's no good crying over spilt milk as they say! The fact is, I look at the concept art of the team, and while my mind screams "EPIC," my heart feels a pang of disappointment. Will seeing the movie get rid of that? Well, I'm convinced that I'll love it, but more than likely not. It's nothing to do with the fact the the comics featured Ant-Man and Wasp as founding members (if we were following things THAT closely, Cap probably wouldn't join the team until the sequel after all!) but is instead all about the fact that I'll always think about what could have been. Had they made just a few different choices along the way since the release of Iron Man in 2008, we would be looking at artwork featuring what this particular fanboy considers to be a truly perfect and epic team of Avengers. Regardless, at least we still have Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and the Hulk, and that in itself is something I'll forever be grateful to Marvel Studios for. Black Widow and Hawkeye are the icing on the cake, but Ant-Man/Giant Man and Wasp would have been the cherry on top. Huh, guess I'm not as over it as I thought...

you're not alone Josh

just visit the boards around esp IMDB, SHH and you'll see the theme of "no substance" and sarcasms of if this can truly deliver an actual story or just a Michael Bay extravaganza where Whedon gets too caught up with trying to deliver on the visual front alone

Yeah, nothing really new is coming into play in this movie that we know of. But I think it helps make the villain anticipation more nerve racking. It's killing me not knowing just who or what it will be, and that is enough to keep anticipation for the film rolling since they will be facing a new threat worthy of bringing them all together, which has hardly any chance of sucking.

Seriously though.... I don't know what it is but I am just not that excited for the Avengers. I feel like outside of the first Iron Man the solo movies were average at best and I am just having a hard time getting excited for this one.

I don't mind them introducing new characters, that way they can focus more on the new relationships between already known characters, as well as going deeper into each character individually.

I think it would help to actually SEE the team instead of these artistic versions. I haven't been a fan of them at all. I want to see an actual image of the actors all ready for battle. That would at least help me get more excited about the film.

@Josh- Good write up man!

well written!
and i totally disagree!!

Joss Whedon is the ideal creative force to inject entertaining personality drama / interaction in a small group of larger than life characters.

I think Maria Hill is a fantastic addition as Joss writes compelling, 3-dimensional women (Kitty Pryde in "Astonishing" is my personal fave)

as really, the movie would just get crowded. it's 2 hours, not a mini-series. everybody needs breathing room, from leads to supporting roles to the villains.

again, very well written article, but I disagree, this movie is absolutely as best positioned for success as possible.

Don't worry, man. The Avengers will be cool, as the other Marvel films. There's clearly a formula working on those Marvel movies, wich are films for the whole family. Good action scenes, good visual, and a very primary, easy to digest script. They're harmless films, no need to be worried. Just simple fun.

Excuse my terrible english.

It may be all "flash and no substance" but this is still something that hasnt been done before, SEVEN characters that were introduced in 5 different films, all coming to together to share the screen in ONE film.

There always will be another Batman film, Superman film or Spidey film but this is the first time we've seen the Avengers on the silverscreen.

I'm sure you'll feel less disappointed once we get an official still of the entire team instead of just art.

I have also had this thought flash across my mind. I'm trying not to be worried but at the same time I like/dislike the direction this is going. Here's hoping.

Exactly how I feel. Other than being excited to know who the secondary antagonist are, with all this build up over five films, one can't help but think how disappointing this could be if the "unexpected threat" is just another one-dimensional megalomaniac.

am I the only person on this site that thinks Ant-Man and Wasp are two of the lamest heroes ever? EMH has almost ruined the character of Wasp for me completely (only downside to such an awesome show) and Ant-Man.....is Ant-Man. if (when) Pym shows up, I'd much prefer him as Goliath/Giant-Man. Wasp.....just cast Olivia Wilde and I could tolerate her. not Dushku, or that chick from V. OK, rant over.

great article btw, Josh.

Wait until you see the movie.

So, basically, this disappointment is due to the fact that the group is not consisted of the characters you wanted? Maybe, just maybe, the movie will actually be entertaining and have a good story. I am pretty sure it will.

And I must highly disagree with calling "bland" a group consisting of Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Hawkeye and Black Widow. That, in my honest opinion, is an epic team.

@Josh I think that Black Widow has a lack of a russian accent because their going to play her as the undercover agent and maybe use the winter soldier storyline to back her up. But I think we'll be alright without Hank and Janet even thought I do love those characters, Hank was a prick in the Ultimates and I wouldn't want to see that be portrayed...

This kind of movie has NEVER been done before. It's going to rock your eyeballs, have non fear.

The artwork thats released has kind of a "designed by commitee" that signals the artist is trying to please too many people at once.

Like many others, I'm afraid that the movie will be too action heavy, thank god we have Joss Whedon directing however, just watch Serenity for proof that he can deal with a great story, a large-ish ensemble cast and great action

along the lines of what @PR0T0TYP3 said, I don't think Marvel really wants a character that beats his wife/girlfriend in their movies just yet. may be a bit soon to delve into that, especially with younger kids watching.

antman and wasp would have been great, but maybe
we'll see them in Avengers II. even without them
this movie will be awesome. I not concerned at all.

@JoshW: your either very brave or very crazy.

Thou darest question the epicest epicness of this epic?

j/k

I'm looking forward to Hulk too. After seeing 'Apes' and what mo-cap can really do, I know they are going to translate the mood and intensity of actor's performance better than any Hulk prior.

I like how we got the origins out of the way, so to speak, but introducing 2 new characters and dealing with their origins takes away from the story that we got going already. The sequel will introduce several new characters with origins, and a new story and will be just as epic as this one. I really would like to see the "Even an Android can cry" story which focuses on different characters. THIS stroy requires THESE characters. No more, No less, as Yoda would say,....if he was here.....and if he was real.... you know what I mean.

@Sorcerer123

Something about you screams juice head... What's your definition of "boring"? Did you love Transformers 3? That movie wasn't boring at all... it also had no substance and few compelling characters... Hank and Janet are compelling. They're a lot easier to relate to than any of the characters on the roster now. Also, don't be a dick.

@EasterBunnyKiller

Preach it. I'm seriously kinda frustrated that Whedon, who is more than kind of a feminist, didn't work more chicks into this. Wasp would have been perfect. I'm curious as to why he said incorporating her was too difficult.

Great read Josh.

But I do disagree. I wanted to see something like this for a long time. (I would most like to see a Marvel Ultimate Alliance movie) Seeing these characters come together on screen for the first time is a dream come true.

Well dude, I kind that feel like you too.
As much that it is great and awesome to have The Avengers on big screen for the first time, I fell it´s weird having those two too(Black Widow, Hawkeye), When I go watch the movie at April 27 next year, I will be there sitting in the cinema pumped for the movie, but at the same time I will miss having Wasp and Giant or Ant Man on the first Avengers movie ever.
And damn it would be epic to see some Hulk vs Giant Man!
Nice write up dude!

We know next to nothing about Black Widow and Hawkeye in the marvel movie universe or in this particular film. To me they are far more interesting characters than Ant-man and Wasp. Maria Hill will be fun as well. And the big 3 will be different here, the group dynamic will affect them a lot. I imagine Thor around Iron Man and Cap will be pretty different than Thor around Jane Foster.
