The folks from Movie Web recently caught up with the director of next week's Captain America: The First Avenger movie, Joe Johnston, where he weighed in on the character's portrayal in next year's The Avengers; and potential Captain America sequels.

"Chris Evans plays a slightly different character in The Avengers. Which I think is good. I think he should be a different character, because he is in a different world. He is still Steve Rogers, and he retains those traits that make him the guy we all call Captain America, but at the same time, he should be different. Now? He is a man out of time. It should affect him. I really don't know anything about The Avengers, and I chose not to get involved in it. I haven't read the script, I haven't seen any footage. Because I didn't want it to influence me. I didn't want to think, "That is what they are doing in that one? Hmm? I better rethink this." I wanted this movie to stand-alone. As a period film. As the only Marvel film that is period. It is the only superhero movie of the summer that is period too. I think we are going to stand alone, and be different from the rest. Though, it is a busy summer. There are a lot of movies out there."

Having stayed away from The Avengers, Johnston then discussed how his approach to a Captain America sequel could affect that.

"I would definitely look at it, and see what they've done. We have talked about a sequel to this film possibly staying in the 1940s. He had a lot of his interests, and he was Captain America for three years during WWII, so there are more stories there. We don't necessarily have to come back to the present day with it. Though, we could..."

Marvel's The Avengers picks up when an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security. And Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. With director Joss Whedon at it's helm, and an ensemble cast including Chris Evans (Steve Rogers), Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark), Chris Hemsworth (Thor Odinson), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff), Clark Gregg (Agt. Phil Coulson), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), with Tom Hiddleston (Loki), and Stellan Skarsgard (Professor Erik Selvig), the film releases worldwide May 4, 2012!

Keep Captain America in our world, post Avengers. Having him take on AIM or Hydra and how he is adapting to our time. Introduce Falcon, Winter Solider, and MODOK.

Good to know that the Captain America film was made as a stand alone film instead of how Iron Man 2 was which was basically a build up for Thor and The Avengers. I have high hopes for this movie.

Yeah, keep the Cap sequel in the present day. Do short films or whatever set in WWII.

Keep Cap in the present but have WWII flashbacks. Just like the comics. Flashbacks would work really well for a Winter Solider movie.

@JerBear My thoughts exactly. Still like Johnston, though. Looking forward to this.

BTW, He was referring to TFA being the only Marvel Studios period piece.

Sequel in the past would be bad ass! Have like a Titanic moment in the beginning with Nick Fury sitting next to a camera pointing at Rogers for S.H.E.I.L.D. stuff. Have him talk about his untold stories from the past and we begin!

I like the idea of sequels having a blend of present day and flashbacks. Too bad they can't do a "movie and TV mini-series" blend thing. Cap has enough great villains that some are bound to be left out in a movie trilogy. For instance, we HAVE to see Zemo, Crossbones, Winter Soldier....and.....Batroc the Leaper!!!!!!! ;-)

I'd like to see the next films take place in the present but he has flash backs of the past. There's no way that they can't include Baron Zemo and many others without the use of flashbacks.

Intruder@ - I had that comic and the art inside was by the truly appalling Frank Robbins, who did his best, in my opinion, to sabotage the title. I mean, look at the headshot of Namor in the top left corner, it's hideous.

The stories were passable but I swear I've never seen art as consistently shit in a Marvel title as the acts of comic-book atrocity committed by Frank Robbins.

The memory of his work makes me shudder to this day.

if they are gonna do a sequel still set in the forties, its gonna be difficult to set it between this origin story and cap being frozen, not impossible though they just have really to make it work.. or they could just a winter soldier movie..

Invaders would be cool, but it would be weird to see Chris Evans and Human Torch fighting side by side. Also, I think Fox bought the rights to Namor when they snatched up the Fantastic Four. Plus they'd have to explain in the Marvel movie continuity what happened to them. Actually, maybe that's not such a good idea.
