Joss Whedon Talks More About The Avengers

Joss Whedon flew to Australia from Los Angeles to discuss storytelling at the Melbourne Writers Festival, first at the Melbourne Town Hall and then at the Sydney Opera House. Naturally he discussed The Avengers as well.

What follows are the Avengers-centric quotes:

"Every waking minute, I'm working on that script."

"This is a gig I've waited my whole life to do."

"I feel connected to this movie in that it's about a gruop of broken people. And if you look at my work, it's very clear that that's the sort of thing that appeals to me."

"All sorts of things have inspired me. For example, Ridley Scott's Black Hawk Down. It's the movie that made things click for me the most, because of the toll taken on them. I felt that superhero movies were a little too nihilistic or a little too clean. I want to stick the screws in and make it personal and make it tough."

"I feel when it comes to the superhero genre, it's entered its postmodern phase without getting its modern phase right."

His remark about finding an in-between from Spider-Man to say, Watchmen is interesting. So I'm guessing from that, we won't be getting a straight adaptation of the Ultimates, thank god.

.... I DO NOT agree or believe that it has entered it's "postmodern" phase. Not at all.
I know there's a bunch of Hollywood nit wits that are saying "CBM's have run their course" and that "the fad will end soon" and I just don't believe a word of it. They still want to look at CBM's like Dick Tracey. or Garfield.

As long as CBM's continue to make bank, CBMs will continue to get made. period. That's all there is to it.
This isn't the post-modern era of CBMs. It's the CUSP of the GOLDEN AGE!!

i think they should keep it simple, the avengers vs loki, the enchantress & using mind control the hulk.

then write a script/story around that.

it can't be that hard for someone whose written a run of x-men comics.

@Juggernaut

He means post-modern in terms of the tones and stories, not the state of the genre itself. I think Jon Favreau and the Captain America director both said they didn't want to make their movies as bleak as Chris Nolan's Batman films.

yeah... post-modern as in deconstructivist. watchmen was a better comic than movie, but the true beauty of watchmen wasn't fulfilled until it was filmed because the circle wasn't complete until the "comic book deconstructing comic books" became the "massive-budget movie event that simultaneously glorified and defied the conventions of massive-budget movie events."

hmmmmm. Well ok.
That comment just struck me as being similar to a lot of other comments that I have heard to the effect that the genre has already run it's course. And that is to the delight of all the people who were annoyed with their initial success in the first place and look down them as "kiddie stuff"

there's this attitude that since Superman, X-Men and Spider-Man have been done already that all the good stuff is "over". Which is ludicrous.

I am of the opinion that CBMs have firmly established themselves as a Genre. That means that while they will have ups and downs they will never vanish for a whole decade or more.

But I do not think they have really hit their stride yet. To me almost all the CBMs to date are simply hints at what is to come. They should mostly be a kind of intense form of Action Movie. They call movies like Saw 'horror porn' I want CBMs to be 'action porn'.

Reading the above I think Wedon gets that which does not surprise me in the least.

Since it is Loki and The Enchantress with Hulk mind control, and it is not just an emotional movie, and has a lot of good action, then I´m fine with that.

As much as I want an Avengers film, Joss would have to make a miracle happen for this. There are so many conflictions surrounding this project. Whedon is not that great of a director when it comes to full-length films. The story itself can go so many ways that it can probably confuse the audience if they try to integrate different arcs from the avengers comics into one package. The characters must have arguments from time to time due to their opposite personalities. However, Joss has to pace those scenes with the action sequences to try to balance out the overall result of the film. Ppl do not want a superhero film with lenghty talking scenes and brief action sequences till the end of the film. Nor do ppl want pure action and the lack of character communication or development. I am still on the fence with this film but I'll just have to wait and see. I can't really justify if I'm optimistic, confident, or have faith in this film. I am just anxious and quite worried untill the footage can prove that Joss has done a miracle.

Just the fact that he mentioned Black Hawk Down as inspiration makes me confident in his "vision" for the Avengers!! That movie had about 15 "main" characters and they all were given enough screen time to tell an EPIC story. Real Good Stuff!!!! :)

I like how he is taken inspiration from Black Hawk Down, that movie has a great feeling of brotherhood and how that connection can get you through the toughest of times. thats how Avengers should feel. With Cap leading the way ofcoarse.

meh until he starts talking about the plot and what the characters are going to be doing, stop posting every little thing Joss says about the Avengers. If I hear one more time how much he loves working on this movie, I will scream lol
