"Bleeding Cool reports that director Joss Whedon was originally set to shoot most of the East Coast-based Avengers in Manhattan. But now, the time spent in New York is going to be reduced considerably to mostly exterior establishing shots, with the vast majority of principle photography taking place on sound stages in and around Southern California

The move will not only cheapen the cost of having to shoot on location in New York, it will also sufficiently reduce the cost of having to transport and house the A list talent The Avengers has amassed, as most of the actors reside in the Los Angeles area. A great deal of the outside action that takes place in the movie will now either be moved indoors or take place in front of a green screen.

The decision to turn The Avengers into "The West Coast Avengers" (figuratively speaking), will certainly save the production money, but it now puts the New York crews, who passed over other projects to work on this, out of work.

"The Avengers" is set to start principal photography on February 2011.

The Avengers will arrive in theaters May 4th, 2012. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Samuel L. Jackson, , Clark Gregg, Jeremy Rener, Mark Ruffalo. The film is directed by Joss Whedon.

It seems like NY and NYC have taken for granted the benefit that allowing companies to film there at reasonable prices has for tourism, and the general public image of the city. It’s a shame that they couldn't come up with a successful tax incentive program to bring the films back from places like Toronto, New Orleans, hell they are even building a massive studio here in Atlanta now to pull in companies needing the interior space.

C'mon NY I know you guys have some of the highest tax rates in the US for your citizens; and they may be willing to pay it, but it doesn't mean everyone else will. Dip the price a bit so the film companies can afford the union labor, over priced accommodations, and insanely over priced experience that is NYC. I have family there, Brooklyn baby! And I love the town, but the cost of staying in Manhattan is beyond nuts and not much better in the boroughs. The bad thing is the hotels know people always want to come to NY so they themselves have absolutely no reason to try to deal or lower their prices because they know people will pay it no matter what it is just to come there. So I can completely sympathize with Marvel on this, even though I dearly wish they would film there just for the atmosphere if nothing else.

It’s a great town, and part of its mythos and mystique is that it is a city so great it has not just heroes, but superheroes to protect it. Sad thing is the superheroes can't afford it.

I don't beleive a word of this. Everything we have seen concerning financial trouble and film shoots being moved has originated by a Bleeding Cool "un named source".

Last I heard, Grumman Studios in Long Island Had been booked and paid for many months and pre production construction was due to begin this month on the massive sets.
