The Pentagon "Couldn’t Do Anything" With THE AVENGERS Because Of S.H.I.E.L.D.

It has been revealed that The Pentagon decided not to work with Marvel Studios on The Avengers because it simply wasn't realistic enough in the way it dealt with S.H.I.E.L.D. as militaristic organisation. Read on for details.

While the World Security Council feature in Marvel's The Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s relationship with the United States government isn't touched upon and is seemingly left intentionally murky. As it turns out, this was a major problem for the organisation which usually works with the makers of films such as Joss Whedon's superhero esemble. "We couldn’t reconcile the unreality of this international organization and our place in it," Phil Strub, the Defense Department’s Hollywood liaison, told Wired. "To whom did S.H.I.E.L.D. answer? Did we work for S.H.I.E.L.D.? We hit that roadblock and decided we couldn’t do anything with the film."

Despite the fact that The Avengers features military aircraft on the Helicarrier and during key scenes in the film, these were in fact digitally inserted and not provided by the US military (a common occurrence in the likes of the Transformers trilogy for example). The Defence Department are obviously extremely conscious of the way they are portrayed in films such as this one and simply couldn't cooperate when an ambiguous organisation like S.H.I.E.L.D is involved. "It just got to the point where it didn’t make any sense," adds Strub, explaining why The Avengers couldn't assemble alongside the US military. However, they did allow the filmmakers to shoot Humvees for some of the later battle scenes.

I think it had to do with the idea that the bosses of SHEILD almost blew up Manhatten Island with a nuke. I mean seriously, what was that? What if the aliens in Manhatten were only one hundreth of the total alien army, what then? Would the Marvel version of the US government just destroy the entire country?

Give me a break. They couldn't deal with JUST that part of the lack of realism. Not the part about a nordic God fighting alongside a big green man?

Surprise surprise. Why would the US military lend its support when SHIELD's shown as a morally vague organization and the entire movie doesn't feature much in pro-military propaganda like Transformers did? The irony is that Marvel Studios was able to paint their espionage agency in a more realistic manner than if they had been handcuffed by military propaganda needs.

THERES A WORLD SECURITY COUNCIL SOMEWHERE, PEOPLE THAT TAKE EXTRA EXTRA PRECAUTIONS OR DO THINGS THEIR WAY LIKE BURGER KING BECAUSE THE REGULAR WAYS OF DEALING WITH THE WORLD ARENT GOOD ENOUGH TO THEM..THEYRE OUT THERE...LOOK OUT

Seriously, they had an issue with SHIELD and not Thor, Hulk, Captain America questioning the stars and stripes...That is the government for you, and the reason it needs a serious enema.

Gigacrusher45 - 5/7/2012, 2:20 PM
Wouldn't the Pentagon just be a separate organization that works alongside Shield because the attack is in New York? Shield doesn't directly work for The United States so there wouldn't be a problem of who answers to who? Why the hell was it confusing to these people who are supposed to be leading a military. Not that it mattered for the movies sake.

No real loss. I don't begrudge them it, but US military restricts access to their stuff based on whether or not a film works as good propaganda for them. Why take script notes from the military? Go ahead and design your own planes, jeeps and the like.
