Will General Thunderbolt Ross Appear in the Avengers Film?

Just something I had been wondering about...

Editorial Opinion

With all the hype in who will appear in the Avengers film, from the director, Joss Whedon, to Hawkeye, being played by Jeremy Renner, the news has been nearly non-stop. However, I have one question: is General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross going to appear?

Up until now, I assumed he would be. If you look at the end of The Incredible Hulk, it shows Tony Stark having a meeting with Ross about the Avengers Initiative and how his "team" could be useful with Ross's Hulk problem.

However, in the news, and all the casting lists of websites, even going to the dreaded IMDB, I still have not been able to find a whisper of General Ross.

In my honest opinion, if they led up to Stark talking to Ross at the end of the Incredible Hulk, and if the Hulk is supposedly the villain, or at least a menace to the Avengers, they should have Ross.

This is just me wondering out loud (with a couple of entertaining pictures) if Ross will appear. If you have an answer, or want to just say what you think, comment below. I put this in Editorial, but I don't know if that's the perfect fit. Thanks for your help!

I have been thinking quite abit about this one too.

I am pretty certain he WILL be in it (and I hope to god they get Hurt back in the role because I think he was easily the best thing in TIH).

That last scene in TIH is interesting on a number of levels. It establishes that both Ross and Stark have 'problems' and that they can get together in order to create 'a team'.

I wonder if these scene may play out very differently once The Avengers is released. They may even use this scene as part of that film - similar in the way that the Bourne Ultimatum used a scene from the Bourne Supremacy in a new context.

It would be interesting to see how Ross could help put together The Avengers team. The obvious answer would be that he has links to The Hulk but if the hulk is 'his problem' then maybe Stark is refering to something (or someone else).

Ross represents the army so maybe Hawkeye is a soldier that SHIELD want to get there hands on. Or maybe Ross has been the one to recover Captain America due to his resources and knowledge about the super soldier serum. Maybe Ross is another member (or past memeber) of SHIELD.

Anyway you look at it Ross (and preferably Hurt) MUST be in The Avengers!

@Orphix, yeah see I had been thinking along those same lines. Esp. about the super soldier serum. and it would seem to be pointless if Ross doesn't apper. The whole end scene would have been for nothing.

Personally I hope it's Hurt too. Absolutely loved him in this role.

YES STARK COMES TO ROSS BECAUSE HE SEE'S ROSS HAS A "BIG PROBLEM"..ROSS HAS TO BE IN IT..I SEE IRON MAN MAINLY ALONG WITH SHIELD TRYING TO CONTAIN HULK..THEN BIGGER PROBLEMS ARISE

@Arminies I agree with you, a history about a Hulk out of control, and confronting heroes for the first time must have Ross and Betty. Betty to calm him down, and Ross to make him even more angry lol.

After the ending with Tony Stark with Ross, I just always assumed Ross would be in the Avengers. But now that it has been brought up I have heard nothing about it. This has to be sneaky Marvel trying to pull one over on us. Of course I still think the real question is exactly how Captain America will end. Is he found in that film or is he left frozen? I think that will make a huge difference in how Ross and the Hulk will play out in the Avengers.

I do hope they find another rain scene with Liv Tyler wearing a see through white shirt. I would consider that a win as well. - GD

I think there will as many Marvel characters as they can possibly fit in to make the story make sense. Ross makes sense, but what i don't get is not having Hanky or Jan in the movie that pisses me off

@strangerx, yeah that's incredibly frustrating. they're core members for crying out loud! and if the synopsis of what Edgar Wright wants to do with the movie (having Pym be in the 60's, Lang in present day) is any real indication to the movie, it sounds like we'll never see Ant-Man or Wasp in an Avenger flick. Honestly, as much as I like Hawkeye, I'd rather see Ant-Man and Wasp than him.

I also wonder if Clay Quartermain is gonna be in this too seeing as he is the SHIELD operative who liases with Ross' Hulkbuster intiative in the comics??

Also I read another really good suggestion on one of the IMDB forums - and that is that Stark at the end of TIH is really Loki in disguise and beginning to pull the strings to get Hulk under his control.

Thought that was a seriously cool idea.

this is why i don't like Norton being recast, it leaves the rest of the cast of TIH in the balance, i want them to keep them the same but how likely is that going to be with no Norton? but if they recast the entire film then they screw up the continuity even more (and the continuity was part of the reason for the MCU so its annoying!)

I am sure Norton being recast doesn't effect the rest of the cast.

Both Tim Roth (The Abomination)and Tim Blake Nelson (The Leader) are both signed up for other potential movies - if one of those happens to be The Avengers remains to be seen.

What is interesting is whether Liv Tyler is showing up - I have my doubts seeing as both Natalie Portman (Jane Foster) and Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts) have both said that they aren't in The Avengers.

you cant have an avengers film without having the supporting characters of each avenger.

hulk: betty and thunderbolt ross
iron man: pepper and happy
thor: jane foster

It stands to reason that he should be in it. Without Ross in Avengers, it'd just make that end scene in TIH a waste of time. Even a cameo would keep the overall story connected.

to be honest idont think tony was refering to the avengers but the hulkbusters whi if the later is true will apper in the avengers to capture the hulk and subsiquently end up in conflict with the avengers over who can stop the hulk first and claim recocnition from it.
that or tony is really loki in disguise and is using ross to pull the strings to get the hulk under his contol.

@ HotHead - I think it's safe to say he was referring to The Avengers; "We're putting a team together". Other than the Avengers, what can he mean? A team of hulk-buster suits??
